Chapter 11 - THE DELAYED LETTER

Teresa stared at the red wax seal. Her hands began to tremble.
“Antonio,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Luca took the heavy parchment envelope from Daniel. His dark eyes scanned the messy, familiar handwriting across the front. It simply said: To my son, Luca.
“Who brought this?” Luca asked, his voice tight with suspicion.
“An independent attorney,” Daniel replied. “He showed me the contract. Antonio paid him a retainer five years ago to keep this in a vault and deliver it today. He said it was a contingency plan.”
Luca stared at the letter. Five years. His father had been dead for five years, yet he was still reaching from beyond the grave to shape their lives.
“Open it, Luca,” Teresa urged, clutching her napkin. “Please.”
Luca slid his thumb under the wax seal, breaking it with a sharp crack. He pulled out two sheets of thick paper.
The dining room was dead silent. Even Leo seemed to sense the gravity of the moment, sitting quietly in his chair.
Luca unfolded the letter. His eyes began to scan the first few lines, and immediately, his jaw clenched.
“Read it out loud,” Teresa requested softly.
Luca swallowed hard. He cleared his throat, and the deep baritone of his voice filled the quiet room.
“My son,
If you are reading this, it means I did not survive the war with the Bellinis. It also means five years have passed, and you have taken my place at the head of the table. I know the burden is heavy, Luca. I never wanted this life for you, but I knew you were the only one strong enough to carry it.”
Luca’s voice cracked slightly. He paused, taking a breath before continuing.
“By now, you have likely discovered the truth about the missing money and the betrayal of Vanessa’s father. I hope you found the chest in the study. I hope you destroyed them before they could destroy you.”
Teresa let out a breath she had been holding. Her husband had known. He had planned for their survival all along.
Luca continued reading, his eyes moving down the page.
“But this letter is not about business, Luca. It is about the house you are building.
Men in our position are often drawn to women who crave our power. They look for queens who want to sit on thrones. But a throne is a cold, lonely place, my son. And power will not hold your hand when the world turns against you.”
Luca stopped reading. He looked up, his dark eyes instantly locking onto mine across the table.
My heart pounded against my ribs.
He looked back down at the letter.
“Look at your mother. Teresa never wanted the money. She never wanted the fear. She only wanted her family to be safe. That is true strength. That is what held me together in the darkest hours of my life.
Do not marry a woman who values the furniture more than the people sitting in the chairs.”
A soft sob escaped my lips. I covered my mouth with my hand.
Teresa was openly weeping, tears of profound love and vindication streaming down her cheeks. Antonio had seen the future. He had known exactly what kind of trap Luca would fall into.
“Find a woman who protects the vulnerable,” Luca read, his voice growing thicker, louder, ringing with absolute certainty. “Find a woman who will wrap her arms around your mother when she is frail. Who will guard your brother’s child as if he were her own. Find a woman with dirt on her hands and a heart of gold.
If you find her, Luca, do not let her go. Give her the necklace. Give her your name. Give her everything.
I love you. Take care of your mother.
Antonio.”
Luca slowly lowered the letter.
The silence in the dining room was sacred.
Teresa stood up. She didn't use her cane. She walked over to her son, wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders, and kissed his cheek.
“He would be so proud of the man you became,” she whispered.
Luca closed his eyes, leaning into his mother’s embrace. The ghost of his father, the weight of the mafia empire, the trauma of Vanessa’s cruelty—it all finally lifted off his shoulders.
He stood up.
He walked around the long dining table, stopping right behind my chair.
My sister, Lily, was grinning from ear to ear, watching us. Leo was bouncing slightly in his seat.
Luca rested his hands on my shoulders.
“I already found her, Dad,” Luca whispered, looking up at the ceiling.
He leaned down, his lips brushing against my ear.
“Stand up, Rachel.”
I stood, turning to face him. My knees were shaking, but not from fear.
Luca reached into his pocket. He didn't pull out the massive, gaudy four-carat diamond he had thrown into Vanessa’s water glass.
He pulled out a delicate, vintage gold ring with a single, flawless sapphire in the center.
“This was my grandmother’s,” Luca said softly, his dark eyes shining with tears. “She wore it every day of her life.”

He took my left hand. His thumb brushed over the silver eagle bracelet resting on my wrist.
“You protected my mother. You protected my nephew. You saved my soul,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a husky whisper meant only for me. “Will you stay and protect my heart?”
