Chapter 7 - THE FALSE ACCUSATION

The silence in the study was absolute. It felt as if the air had been sucked out of the room.

On my side of the door, I held Leo tighter against my chest. The six-year-old had his face buried in my neck, mercifully oblivious to the devastating words Vanessa had just screamed.

Ask her whose child Leo actually is.

“What did you say?” Luca’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried through the heavy wooden doors like a physical blow.

“You heard me,” Vanessa sneered. The panic in her voice had been replaced by vicious triumph. “You think your family is so honorable. You think your mother is a saint. But your father wasn’t protecting a nephew, Luca. Your brother didn't father this child.”

“Stop,” Teresa commanded. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it possessed a quiet, terrifying authority.

“Why should I?” Vanessa spat back. “He deserves to know! Antonio was having an affair. Leo is your father’s bastard son. That’s why Antonio left the vault to him. That’s why he wanted to fake his death and take the money—to start over with his real family!”

I clamped my hand over my mouth to keep from gasping.

It couldn't be true. Teresa had loved Antonio. She had built this family with him.

“You’re a liar,” Luca said, his voice trembling with a rage so deep it made the floorboards vibrate.

“Check the vault!” Vanessa shrieked. “The key is the pocket watch and the boy’s bracelet! If you open Antonio’s private safety deposit box, you’ll find the DNA test. You’ll find the proof that your brother was sterile, Luca! He never had children!”

My heart hammered violently against my ribs.

I reached into my apron pocket. The heavy gold watch felt like it was burning my skin.

If Vanessa was right, then giving this watch to Luca would destroy his memory of his father and humiliate Teresa completely.

“My brother loved his wife,” Luca said, his voice breaking. “They died in a car crash. They left me their son. Do not disrespect their memory.”

“They died because they found out the truth!” Vanessa yelled. “They were going to expose Antonio’s affair! That’s why the Bellini family needs the vault, Luca! It holds the money Antonio owed us for keeping his filthy secrets!”

I couldn't listen to it anymore.

I put Leo down gently. “Stay right here behind the sofa, buddy. Be as quiet as a mouse.”

Leo nodded, his wide eyes shining in the dark library.

I pushed open the adjoining doors and stepped into the study.

Luca, Teresa, Vanessa, and Daniel all turned to look at me.

Vanessa was sitting in a leather chair, her beautiful red dress wrinkled, her mascara running down her face. She looked like a trapped animal.

“Rachel, get out,” Luca ordered softly, not taking his eyes off Vanessa.

“No,” I said. My voice shook, but I forced myself to walk forward.

I walked straight past Luca and stood in front of Teresa.

The seventy-eight-year-old woman was trembling violently. The cruel accusation had struck her like a physical blow. Her face was pale, and she was gripping her cane so hard her knuckles were white.

I reached into my apron and pulled out the heavy gold pocket watch.

Vanessa’s eyes locked onto it instantly. “She has it! Luca, get it from her!”

I ignored her. I gently placed the watch into Teresa’s trembling hands.

“Mrs. Moretti,” I said softly. “You told me to hide this. But I think you need to be the one holding it now.”

Teresa looked down at the gold watch. A single tear slipped down her wrinkled cheek.

“Mom,” Luca said gently, stepping closer to her. He didn’t look angry anymore. He looked heartbroken. “Is it true? Did dad…”

He couldn't finish the sentence.

Teresa slowly closed her fingers over the watch. She lifted her head.

“Antonio was many things, Luca,” she said, her voice steadying. “He was ruthless. He was secretive. He was a man who lived in the shadows.”

She turned to look at Vanessa.

“But he never betrayed me,” Teresa said fiercely. “And he never betrayed your brother.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly. “Then open the vault, old woman! Show him the DNA test! Show him the proof!”

Teresa didn't yell. She calmly reached up to her neck and unclasped the silver rosary that was attached to the watch.

“There is no DNA test in the vault, Vanessa,” Teresa said quietly. “Because Antonio didn't hide his secrets in a bank.”

Vanessa stopped laughing. “What are you talking about?”

Teresa turned to Luca. “Your father knew the Bellini family was planning to betray him. He knew Vanessa’s father was embezzling millions from the families and planning to frame Antonio for it.”

Luca’s eyes widened.

“He faked his death not to run away with another family,” Teresa continued, her voice filled with pride. “He faked his death to gather the evidence needed to destroy the Bellinis without risking a war that would kill his sons.”

Teresa stepped forward and pressed the pocket watch into Luca’s hand.

“The watch isn't a key to a bank vault, Luca,” Teresa said.

She turned and pointed her cane toward the massive stone fireplace at the end of the study.

“It’s the key to the iron grate behind the fire,” Teresa revealed.

The room went dead silent.

Luca looked at the fireplace. He walked over, knelt down, and reached into the cold ashes. His hand found a small, hidden keyhole in the iron stonework.

He inserted the pocket watch. It clicked perfectly.

With a heavy grind, the back wall of the fireplace swung open, revealing a hidden compartment.

Luca reached inside and pulled out a small, heavy wooden chest.

He placed it on the desk and popped the brass latches.

Vanessa leaned forward, her eyes wide with greedy anticipation. She thought she was about to see millions of dollars in cash.

But when Luca opened the lid, there was no money.

Instead, the chest was filled with handwritten letters, ledgers, and audio tapes.

“Proof,” Luca whispered, lifting a ledger. “Proof that Bellini stole the money. Proof that he ordered the hit on my brother’s car.”

Vanessa’s face went chalk white. “No. No, my father said Antonio owed us—”

“Your father lied to you, Vanessa,” Teresa said coldly. “He sent you here to find the vault so you could destroy the evidence before Luca found it. He made you a pawn to cover up his own murder of my son.”

Vanessa collapsed back into the chair, sobbing as her entire reality shattered.

But as Luca dug deeper into the chest, his hand brushed against something soft at the very bottom.

He pulled it out.

It was a heavy, dark blue wool coat.

I recognized it immediately. It was the coat Luca’s younger brother used to wear. The coat he had been wearing the night he died.

Luca stared at the coat, his eyes filling with tears. He slowly ran his hand over the fabric.

As he touched the right pocket, something inside gave a sharp, metallic clink.
