Chapter 8 - THE HEIRLOOM NECKLACE

The heavy metallic clink from inside the wool coat seemed to echo in the silent study.

Luca froze. His large hand hovered over the fabric.

Teresa let out a soft, broken gasp and pressed her hand to her chest.

Even Vanessa stopped sobbing, staring at the dark blue coat as if it were a ghost.

“Luca,” Teresa whispered, her voice fragile. “Open the pocket.”

With shaking fingers, Luca reached into the deep pocket of his late brother’s coat. When he pulled his hand out, he wasn’t holding a weapon, or a key, or cash.

He was holding a breathtaking diamond and sapphire necklace.

It was heavy, antique, and glimmered under the study’s warm lamps. It was the Moretti family heirloom—the piece of jewelry traditionally given to the woman who would become the matriarch of the family.

It had been missing for five years.

Attached to the heavy silver clasp was a small, folded piece of thick stationery.

Luca unfolded the paper. His dark eyes scanned the messy, familiar handwriting of his late younger brother.

Tears immediately spilled over his lashes, dropping silently onto the paper.

“What does it say?” I asked softly, forgetting my place as a maid.

Luca swallowed hard. His voice cracked as he read the words aloud.

“For Leo. Keep this safe, Luca. Give it to him when he’s grown, so he can give it to the woman who stays by his side. The woman who protects our family when the world turns cold.”

A profound, heavy silence filled the room.

Vanessa’s cruel lies about Leo’s parentage were entirely dismantled by a father’s final, loving note to his son.

Vanessa stared at the sparkling necklace, realizing she had spent months hunting for leverage, money, and power, only to discover that the greatest treasure in the Moretti house was simply a symbol of loyalty and love.

“He knew,” Luca whispered, looking up at his mother. “He knew the Bellinis were coming for him that night. He hid his coat in dad’s chest to protect the necklace for Leo.”

Teresa nodded, tears streaming down her face. “Your father and your brother were trying to protect us, Luca. They hid the truth because they knew the Bellini family would target Leo to get the inheritance.”

Luca slowly lowered the note.

The sorrow in his eyes morphed into something terrifying and absolute.

He turned toward Vanessa.

She shrank back into the leather chair, pulling her knees to her chest. “Luca, I didn’t know. I swear to you, my father told me Antonio stole the money. He told me it was rightfully ours. I only wanted what was mine!”

“You wanted power,” Luca said, his voice eerily calm. “You wanted the money. And to get it, you tried to break an old woman’s dignity. You threatened a child with an orphanage. You tried to frame a young woman who makes a fraction of your dress’s cost, just to save your own skin.”

He walked toward her.

“Daniel.”

“Yes, boss.”

“Call the Commission,” Luca ordered, not taking his eyes off Vanessa. “Send them the ledgers from the chest. Send them the proof that Bellini stole the money and ordered the hit on my brother.”

Vanessa screamed, throwing herself at Luca’s feet. “No! They’ll kill my father! They’ll kill my whole family! Please, Luca!”

Luca looked down at her without a single ounce of pity.

“You told my mother she was a burden,” Luca said softly. “You told her to pack her bags.”

He stepped back, gesturing to the door.

“Pack your bags, Vanessa. The Commission will handle your father. You are officially exiled from Chicago. If I ever see your face in this city again, I will not be as forgiving as my mother.”

Daniel hauled a sobbing, hysterical Vanessa off the floor and dragged her out of the study.

The heavy doors slammed shut, and suddenly, the oppressive weight that had hung over the mansion for six months vanished.

The toxic presence was gone.

Luca stood in the center of the room, breathing heavily. Then, he looked at his mother.

He crossed the room and dropped to his knees in front of her, burying his face in her lap.

“I’m sorry, Mom,” the feared mafia boss sobbed like a child. “I’m so sorry I brought her into this house. I’m so sorry I didn't see what she was doing to you.”

Teresa ran her trembling hands through his dark hair, kissing the top of his head.

“Hush, sweetheart,” she whispered, crying with him. “You’re safe. We’re all safe now.”

I stood near the doorway, tears streaming down my own face. I felt like I was intruding on a sacred family moment. I quietly took a step backward, intending to slip back into the library to check on Leo.

But before I could leave, Luca lifted his head.

“Rachel.”

I stopped. “Yes, Mr. Moretti?”

He stood up, wiping his eyes. He walked over to the desk, picked up the white envelope containing my four thousand dollars, and walked over to me.

He gently pressed the envelope into my hands.

“Your sister’s tuition is covered,” Luca said softly. “Not just for this semester. For the rest of her degree. The Moretti family will pay for it.”

My jaw dropped. “Mr. Moretti, no. I can’t accept that. That’s thousands of dollars.”

“You protected my mother when I was blind,” Luca said, his dark eyes locking onto mine with fierce intensity. “You put your own livelihood on the line to save her dignity. You protected my nephew tonight. You are not a maid in this house anymore, Rachel. You are under my protection.”

I burst into fresh tears, clutching the envelope to my chest.

Then, Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out the stunning diamond and sapphire heirloom necklace.

He didn't give it to his mother.

He held it out to me.

“My brother’s note said to give this to the woman who protects our family when the world turns cold,” Luca said quietly.

I stared at the sparkling jewels, my breath caught in my throat.

“Keep this safe for us, Rachel.”
