Chapter 4 - THE EMERALD BRACELET

The air in the office grew entirely still, thick with the smell of rain and gun oil.

Vincent kept his weapon leveled directly at Preston’s chest, completely unfazed by the four automatic rifles aimed back at him.

“The Kozlov family,” Vincent noted, his voice flat, recognizing the tattoos on the necks of the gunmen. “You’re in deeper than I thought, Preston.”

“I’m exactly where I need to be,” Preston said, regaining his smug, controlling posture. He straightened his ruined suit jacket. “I didn’t steal your fifty million, Vincent. I redirected it. The Kozlovs bought my debt, and I paid them with your accounts.”

Claire stood frozen behind Vincent’s broad shoulders.

“You dragged me into a mob war?” she asked, her voice shaking with disbelief.

Preston looked at her, his expression cold and clinical. “You were the key to the entire operation, Claire. I didn’t marry you for your sparkling personality. I married you for your biometrics.”

Claire’s stomach churned. “My what?”

“Your father was a paranoid man,” Preston explained, stepping closer to the desk, though he kept a safe distance from Vincent’s gun. “Before he died, he locked his master ledger—the one detailing every illicit account in Wintermere—inside a physical vault. And he keyed the lock to his only living relative’s fingerprint.”

He pointed a finger at Claire.

“I spent nine months grooming you, breaking you down, making you utterly dependent on me, just waiting for the day I could bring you here to open that safe.”

Preston gestured to a massive, steel door set flush into the concrete wall behind the desk.

“Open the safe, Claire,” Preston ordered.

“Don’t move, Claire,” Vincent said softly.

“If she doesn’t open it, the Kozlovs kill us all,” Preston warned. “Including you, Moretti.”

“Let them try,” Vincent replied.

The lead Kozlov gunman racked his rifle, the metallic click echoing loudly.

“Enough talking,” the gunman said with a heavy accent. “Open the vault, or we shoot the husband.”

Claire looked at Preston. A dark, ugly part of her wanted them to pull the trigger.

But the gunman immediately shifted his aim, pointing the barrel directly at Vincent’s head.

“Then we shoot him,” the gunman corrected.

Claire’s breath hitched. She couldn’t let Vincent die for her. He was the only person who had ever stepped between her and the violence.

“Okay,” Claire said, stepping out from behind Vincent.

“Claire, no,” Vincent warned, his eyes fixed on the gunmen.

“I’m doing it,” she said softly, touching his arm.

She walked past her husband, refusing to look at his smug face, and approached the heavy steel vault door.

There was a small, illuminated glass scanner embedded in the metal.

Claire pressed her right thumb against the glass.

A green light swept across her fingerprint.

A heavy, mechanical clunk echoed deep within the wall. The steel door unsealed with a hiss of pressurized air.

Claire grabbed the heavy handle and pulled it open.

She expected stacks of cash. She expected ledgers, hard drives, bearer bonds.

The vault was entirely empty, except for a single, small velvet box resting on a metal shelf.

Preston pushed past her, practically vibrating with greed. He grabbed the box and snapped it open.

His face fell.

“Where is the ledger?” Preston demanded, his voice cracking in panic.

Claire looked into the box.

Resting on the velvet was a delicate, breathtaking emerald bracelet.

It wasn’t a financial document. It was jewelry.

“What is this?” Preston yelled, turning to Vincent. “Where is the ledger?!”

Vincent’s gaze dropped to the emerald bracelet. For the first time all night, the absolute control on the Mafia boss’s face slipped.

He looked stunned.

“That’s impossible,” Vincent whispered.

“What is it?” Claire asked.

“That bracelet,” Vincent said, his voice thick with a sudden, overwhelming emotion. “It was in the car the night your father died.”

Answer one.

The vault didn’t hold financial ruin for the mafia. It held a deeply personal artifact from the night Claire’s life was destroyed.

Open two.

If the bracelet was in the car crash, how did it get inside a biometrically sealed vault? And where was the master ledger Preston needed?

“I don’t care about antique jewelry!” Preston screamed, losing his composure entirely as the Kozlov gunmen stepped closer, their patience gone.

“Where is the money, Hale?” the lead gunman demanded.

Preston panicked. He looked around wildly, then his eyes locked on Claire.

In a sudden, violent movement, Preston lunged forward, grabbing Claire by the hair and pulling her hard against his chest. He reached into his coat and pulled a small, silver pistol, pressing the barrel directly against the base of Claire’s spine.

“Drop the gun, Moretti!” Preston shrieked. “Drop it, or I blow her spine out right now!”

Vincent froze.

The Kozlov gunmen raised their rifles, cornering them completely.

Claire gasped in pain as Preston yanked her hair tighter.

“I said drop it!” Preston screamed.

Vincent looked into Claire’s eyes. He saw her terror.

Slowly, deliberately, Vincent opened his fingers.

His heavy black pistol clattered onto the concrete floor.

He was completely unarmed.
