Chapter 7 - THE CONFESSION

The words hung in the air, heavy and absolute.
Nora stared at Adrian, her mind struggling to process the sheer scope of what had just happened.
“Intercepted him?” Nora repeated. “Adrian, what does that mean? Where is he?”
“He is being handed over to the federal authorities as we speak,” Adrian replied, his voice even. “Along with a very detailed ledger of his fraudulent investments and his connections to Vincent’s money laundering operation. He is going to federal prison, Nora. For a very long time.”
Allison let out a choked gasp from the corner of the room. She looked at Nora, her face pale and streaked with mascara.
“Nora, I’m sorry,” Allison sobbed, clutching Leo tighter. “I was just so desperate. I didn’t want Mom and Dad to lose the house, and I needed the money, and Mark said it was foolproof—”
“Stop,” Nora said, her voice surprisingly steady.
She stood up, still clutching the heavy diamond bracelet. She walked over to her sister.
For her entire life, Allison had been the golden child. The perfect wife, the perfect mother, the one who never made mistakes. Nora had always been the mess. The divorced one. The one who needed to be hidden on the end of the photograph.
But right now, looking at Allison crying on the floor of a hotel suite, Nora didn’t feel inferior. She felt pity.
“You were willing to sell out Mom and Dad’s future to save yourself,” Nora said quietly.
“I was trying to fix it!”
“No, Allison. You were trying to hide it.” Nora crouched down and gently placed a hand on Leo’s shoulder. The boy looked up at her with wide, terrified eyes.
“Aunt Nora?” Leo whispered. “Is Mommy going to jail too?”
Nora’s heart broke. She smoothed Leo’s hair, offering him a soft, reassuring smile. “No, buddy. Mommy made a bad choice, but she’s not going to jail. Everything is going to be okay. I promise.”
Nora stood up and looked at her sister.
“I won’t tell them,” Nora said coldly. “I won’t tell Mom and Dad that you knew. Let them think Mark acted alone. But you are going to get financial counseling, Allison. And if you ever put this boy in danger again, I will tear you apart.”
Allison nodded frantically, burying her face in her hands.
Nora turned back to Adrian.
He was watching her, his dark eyes filled with a profound, quiet respect.
He walked over to the console table and picked up a set of heavy car keys. He tossed them slightly in his hand, the metal jingling in the quiet room.
“My driver is waiting outside,” Adrian said. “He will take your sister and nephew home safely.”
Nora let out a breath she felt she had been holding for an hour. “Thank you.”
Adrian didn’t smile. The shadows in the room seemed to cling to him, highlighting the sharp, rigid lines of his jaw.
He walked slowly toward the door, stepping over one of the unconscious guards. He paused in the doorway and looked back at her.
“It is done, Nora,” Adrian said softly. “The debt is settled. The money is safe. Your family is protected.”
“We did it,” Nora breathed, a genuine, relieved smile touching her lips for the first time all night.
But Adrian didn’t smile back.
He looked down at the keys in his hand, then up at her, his expression unreadable.
“I told you I needed someone to stand beside,” Nora said, taking a step toward him. “And you did. Thank you, Adrian.”
Adrian shook his head slowly.
“I bought this building to trap a killer,” Adrian said, his voice devoid of any warmth. “I used your family’s anniversary to flush Mark out. I brought violence and guns into a room with an eight-year-old boy.”
Nora stopped. The coldness in his voice sent a chill down her spine.
“You protected us,” Nora insisted.
“I am dangerous, Nora,” Adrian said quietly. “My world is violent. It is built on blood, and secrets, and collateral. You asked me to be a fake date to make your ex-husband jealous. You got a mob boss instead.”
He tossed the keys onto the small table by the door.
“I have arranged for a private car to take you back to your apartment,” Adrian continued, his eyes completely hollow. “You have your dignity back. You have your family’s money. Your grandfather’s watch is in my jacket pocket; I’ll leave it on the table. But this is where it ends.”
Nora stared at him, her heart dropping into her stomach. “What are you talking about?”
May you like
“I am releasing you from your employment,” Adrian said. “I will provide a generous severance package. But you are not coming back to my house, Nora. You need to walk away from me. For your own safety.”
He turned around and walked out into the dark hallway, leaving Nora standing in the center of the shattered room.
