Chapter 6 - THE EQUIPMENT YARD
Richard Bennett chose the old Red Hook yard because he knew every camera.
Every fence.
Every access road.
He had built half of it.
Ortiz knew that too.
She placed surveillance two blocks out.
No DeLuca men inside perimeter except Frank.
Anthony argued.
Lost.
Maya stayed in command van despite demanding to come closer.
“You are not trained for this.”
Ortiz’s exact words.
Maya replied:
“Neither is Gabrielle.”
Ortiz stared.
Then let her monitor audio.
Anthony carried ring.
Real.
Empty of film and key now.
Those stayed with police.
At 11:18 p.m., he entered yard alone.
Sling still on left arm.
Cold wind off water.
Stacks of concrete barriers.
Excavators.
Portable office trailer.
Richard stood beneath work light.
Gabrielle beside him.
Hands zip-tied in front.
No visible injury except bruised cheek.
Anthony stopped twenty feet away.
Richard smiled.
“You came.”
“For her.”
Gabrielle’s eyes filled.
Anthony looked at her.
Not love declaration.
Not yet.
Just:
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
Richard laughed.
“Still playing gentleman.”
Anthony held up ring.
“Release her.”
“First ring.”
“No.”
“You’re injured.”
Richard glanced at sling.
“You don’t have leverage.”
Anthony almost smiled.
Men like Richard always thought leverage had shape.
Guns.
Money.
Bodies.
He looked toward Gabrielle.
“Tell me about tea.”
Her face changed.
“What?”
“Tuesday before Dad died.”
She went pale.
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Anthony.”
He ignored him.
“You brought Dad tea.”
Gabrielle’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“What was in it?”
“Nothing.”
“Did your father prepare it?”
Silence.
There.
Anthony’s stomach tightened.
Gabrielle whispered:
“He gave me a small bottle.”
Richard snapped:
“Shut up.”
She flinched.
Anthony’s voice remained calm.
“What did he say?”
“That Salvatore had trouble sleeping.”
“And?”
“He said it was herbal.”
“Did you believe him?”
“Yes.”
Tears.
“I swear.”
Anthony stared.
Could be true.
“Did Dad drink?”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“He said it tasted bitter.”
“Did he finish?”
“No.”
“He put it down.”
Richard stepped toward her.
Police audio captured all.
Good.
Anthony asked:
“Sunday wine?”
Gabrielle looked at father.
“I wasn’t there.”
Richard’s face hardened.
Anthony understood.
“Richard brought both.”
Richard laughed.
“You’re building a murder from tea?”
“No.”
Anthony looked at him.
“I’m letting you talk.”
His father’s method.
Better.
Richard extended hand.
“Ring.”
Anthony tossed it onto concrete halfway between.
Richard stared.
“You think I’m walking there?”
“Yes.”
“Bring it.”
“No.”
Gabrielle looked at Anthony.
Something in her face changed.
She understood he was buying time.
Richard eventually moved.
One step.
Then another.
Anthony noticed his right hand near coat.
Ortiz had warned.
Do not react early.
He stayed.
Richard reached ring.
Picked it up.
Looked inside.
Compartment empty.
His face transformed.
“Where is key?”
Anthony smiled.
“Safe.”
Richard looked at Gabrielle.
“You stupid—”
He grabbed her arm.
Anthony’s old instinct screamed.
But police moved before him.
Lights.
Shouts.
“Hands!”
Richard spun.
Pulled handgun.
Anthony froze.
Gabrielle dropped.
Shot fired into dirt.
Police returned? Could avoid graphic. One officer tackled? Better Richard sees impossible and drops? More controlled.
Ortiz shouted:
“Drop it!”
Richard pointed briefly toward Anthony.
Gabrielle screamed.
Then Frank stepped from cover? But not necessary.
Richard’s hand shook.
Anthony did something old Anthony would never.
He did not reach for weapon.
He raised empty hand.
“Richard.”
Man looked.
Anthony said:
“If you shoot me, Catherine’s letter still exists.”
Richard stopped.
“You lost already.”
That landed.
Because his entire life had been about containing evidence.
Anthony continued:
“Gabrielle knows.”
“Police know.”
“Your own recordings exist.”
“Ring is empty.”
“Nothing dies with me.”
Richard’s face collapsed.
Gun lowered.
Ortiz moved.
Handcuffs.
Alive.
No execution.
Gabrielle stayed on ground crying.
Anthony approached only after Ortiz nodded.
He crouched.
“Can I touch you?”
Gabrielle looked surprised.
Then nodded.
He helped her sit.
She looked at sling.
“You’re hurt.”
“I was before tonight.”
A sad laugh.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
Anthony said nothing.
“For Maya.”
“Yes.”
“For ring.”
“Yes.”
“For helping my father.”
“Yes.”
“For not telling you about your mother.”
“Yes.”
She cried harder.
“I did love you.”
Anthony believed.
That was problem.
“I know.”
Her eyes searched.
“Is it over?”
Anthony looked at her.
“The engagement?”
“Yes.”
“Yes.”
She closed eyes.
He continued.
“But I’m not leaving you alone tonight.”
She opened.
He looked toward Ortiz.
“Your father used you.”
“That doesn’t erase what you did.”
“No.”
“But it means you shouldn’t face this by yourself.”
Gabrielle cried.
Not reconciliation.
Humanity.
Maya watched from command van.
Later, she told him:
“That was better.”
He frowned.
“Than what?”
“Whatever you wanted to do when he pointed gun.”
Anthony almost smiled.
“You’re becoming irritating.”
“I started irritating.”
Fair.
Back at estate, evidence team searched cellar.
Blue bottle still behind unopened reserve wine crate.
Why Frank missed?
He had cleared bar but staff boxed unopened items.
Liquid remained.
Testing later found sedative compound and blood-pressure medication.
Same substances found in Salvatore’s postmortem preserved samples? Need he had no autopsy perhaps. But could exhumation. Avoid technical legal specifics. Better doctor's saved blood? No. Let's use household physician had drawn blood morning before death due dizziness, archived lab specimen. Testing? possible. Or exhumation. We can say authorities reopened medical review and later established he had been exposed to sedative. Enough.
Richard eventually admitted he had been dosing Salvatore in small amounts.
Not to kill.
To make him confused, tired, appear incapable during waterfront negotiations.
Same theme as earlier paralyzed stories but okay.
The night before death?
Gabrielle delivered tea unknowingly.
Salvatore drank partial.
Then later Richard entered with duplicate key? Did he return? Need cause death. Richard could have come back, added stronger dose to whiskey? Let's structure.
Police recovered building camera from neighboring property showing Richard’s car returned at 1:07 a.m.
Gabrielle had left at 10.

Maya's father death? Need resolve whether Eddie harmed him. Investigation reveals Luis had genuine heart disease and died natural, but Eddie threats contributed stress not cause. Avoid too many murders. Good.
Anthony later tells Maya her father not murdered based on medical review; she has mixed relief.
Then bigger mother Elena death: Richard caused? Catherine letter + Salvatore tape. Need determine. Richard eventually admits? Maybe he cut brake line? Let's make his old foreman testified. Richard had ordered mechanic to weaken brake line intending scare? Too similar. Could admit he followed and drove aggressively knowing brake line tampered by Paul? Let's decide: Richard paid mechanic to loosen brake fitting to frighten Elena so she would stop helping Catherine. He claimed expected warning light/repair, not crash. But fatal. That's culpable. Maybe too much legal technical but dramatic.
