Chapter 12 - The Vows

The coastal breeze swept off the ocean, carrying the scent of salt and pine through the open windows of the small chapel in Maine.

It was a perfect, sun-drenched Saturday. There were no bodyguards at the doors. There were no black SUVs idling in the parking lot. The men in tailored suits who used to follow Alessandro like shadows were gone, replaced by a small gathering of the only people who truly mattered.

I stood in the vestibule, smoothing the lace on my white gown, my stomach fluttering with nervous excitement.

“You look beautiful, sweetheart,” my mother said softly, stepping into the room. She was wearing a lovely pale blue dress, her oxygen concentrator resting quietly by her feet, but she stood tall and strong.

“Thanks, Mom,” I smiled, blinking back tears so I wouldn't ruin my makeup.

“He’s a good man, Nora,” she said, taking my hands. “I knew it the day I saw him at the hospital with Leo. He has his father’s heart.”

“I know,” I whispered, squeezing her hands back.

The soft, acoustic chords of a guitar began to play from the main chapel.

“Ready?” Rosa asked, poking her head through the doorway, dabbing her eyes with a tissue.

I took a deep breath and nodded.

My mother linked her arm through mine, and together, we walked down the short aisle.

The chapel was filled with golden afternoon light. I didn't see the flowers, or the guests, or the ocean outside the windows. I only saw him.

Alessandro stood at the altar, breathtaking in a classic black tuxedo. The hard, untouchable mafia boss was entirely gone. In his place stood a man looking at me with such overwhelming love and reverence that it felt like gravity had completely shifted.

Standing right beside him, looking incredibly proud in his own miniature tuxedo, was Leo. He was holding a velvet pillow with our wedding rings, beaming from ear to ear.

When my mother and I reached the altar, she kissed my cheek and carefully handed my hand to Alessandro.

His fingers were warm and incredibly strong. He pulled me close, kissing my forehead before we turned to the officiant.

“Today, we celebrate not just the union of two people, but the merging of a family,” the officiant began.

When it was time for the vows, Alessandro didn't pull out a piece of paper. He looked directly into my eyes, his voice clear and unwavering.

“Nora,” he said softly. “You found me in the darkest part of my life. I was a man who only knew how to break things. But you demanded that I fix what was broken. You fought for my son. You fought for our future. You are the bravest woman I have ever known. I promise to protect you, to honor you, and to spend every day of my life making sure you never have to be afraid again. I am yours, completely.”

A tear slipped down my cheek. I took a trembling breath and looked up at the man who had changed my entire world.

“Alessandro,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “I used to think survival meant keeping your head down and accepting whatever life threw at you. But you taught me how to stand up. You gave me a family. You gave me Leo. You showed me that even in the darkest shadows, there is a way out if you fight for it together. I love you, and I promise to stand by your side, in the light, forever.”

Leo stepped forward, holding out the rings.

Alessandro took the delicate diamond band and slid it onto my finger. I took the heavy gold band and placed it on his.

“By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the officiant smiled. “You may kiss the bride.”

Alessandro pulled me into his arms, wrapping one hand around my waist and tangling the other in my hair. He kissed me with a desperate, beautiful passion, a promise sealed in front of our family and the world.

The small chapel erupted in cheers. Rosa whistled loudly, and my mother clapped, wiping her eyes.

Alessandro pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, both of us smiling so hard it hurt.

Suddenly, I felt a tug on my white lace dress.

I looked down. Leo was looking up at us, his big brown eyes shining.

“Does this mean I get pancakes for dinner?” Leo asked entirely seriously.

Alessandro threw his head back and laughed—a rich, joyful sound that filled the room. He scooped Leo up in one arm, pulling me tight against his side with the other.

“Yes, buddy,” Alessandro smiled, kissing the top of Leo’s head. “We can have whatever we want.”

May you like

We walked back down the aisle together, the three of us, stepping out of the chapel and into the bright, warm afternoon sun. The past was finally buried. The ledger was gone, the debts were paid, and the shadows were behind us.

We were finally safe. We were finally home.
