Chapter 12 - The Vows

The string quartet played a soft, beautiful melody as I walked down the aisle of white rose petals scattered across the grass.
David walked beside me, his arm linked tightly with mine. He wore a tuxedo that actually fit, his scar barely noticeable under his wide, genuine smile.
“Don’t trip,” David whispered out of the side of his mouth.
“Don’t make me laugh,” I whispered back, my eyes locked on the end of the aisle.
Adrian stood under an archway of woven branches and autumn leaves. He looked at me like I was the only person in the universe. Beside him stood Noah, looking incredibly handsome in his miniature tuxedo, proudly holding a velvet pillow with our gold rings.
When I reached the altar, David kissed my cheek and handed me over to Adrian.
Adrian took my hands. They were warm, strong, and perfectly steady.
The officiant spoke about love and endurance, but I barely heard the words. I was lost in Adrian’s eyes, remembering the cold, terrifying man I had met two years ago, and marveling at the deeply loving, fiercely protective father and husband standing before me now.
“Noah,” Adrian said softly, kneeling down.
Noah stepped forward, holding out the pillow.
Adrian took my ring and stood, sliding it onto my finger.
“Clara,” Adrian said, his voice carrying clearly over the quiet rustle of the trees. “I spent my entire life building walls, hoarding power, and preparing for war. I thought that was the only way to survive. But you taught me that survival isn't enough. You taught me how to live. You are my light in the dark. You are my family. I am yours, completely and forever.”
Tears streamed freely down my face. I took his ring and slid it onto his finger.
“Adrian,” I whispered, my voice trembling with emotion. “You saved me in the shadows before I even knew I needed saving. You gave me a home, you gave me a son, and you gave me a love I never thought I deserved. I will stand by you, in the light and in the dark, for the rest of our days.”
“I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the officiant smiled. “You may kiss the bride.”
Adrian didn't hesitate. He pulled me into his arms and kissed me with a passion that took my breath away, a promise of a lifetime of safety, joy, and unbreakable love.
The small crowd erupted into cheers.
Noah cheered the loudest, dropping the ring pillow and throwing his arms around our legs.

Adrian scooped Noah up with one arm, pulling me close with the other. We stood together under the autumn sun, no longer a crime boss, a secretary, and a lonely boy.
We were just a family. And we were finally home.
