Chapter 8 - THE RECKONING

The heavy steel blast doors locked into place with a sound like a tomb sealing shut.

Behind the observation glass, Leo looked up. Even through the thick pane, he saw me. His eyes went wide, and his small hands flew up, frantically signing.

Tessa! Help me! The bad man!

Tears blurred my vision. I pressed my hands against the reinforced glass, wanting nothing more than to shatter it and pull him into my arms.

"Ten seconds, Salvatore," Vance’s voice echoed through the intercom. "Nine... Eight..."

Salvatore didn't panic. He didn't drop his gun.

Instead, he looked directly at the security camera mounted in the corner of the ceiling. A slow, chilling smile spread across his face.

He lowered the weapon, but he didn't surrender it. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his phone.

"You think you're playing chess, Richard," Salvatore said aloud, his deep voice carrying clearly to the hidden microphones. "But you're playing checkers. And you're out of moves."

"Seven... Six..." Vance sneered, though a hint of uncertainty bled into his tone. "Empty threats, Marquetti."

"Are they?" Salvatore pressed a button on his phone.

Instantly, the intercom system screeched with feedback. Vance’s voice was cut off, replaced by the chaotic sounds of a news broadcast playing directly over the facility's speakers.

"...breaking news out of downtown Chicago," a female anchor’s voice echoed through the sterile hallway. "Billionaire real estate mogul Richard Vance is currently the subject of a massive federal raid. The FBI has surrounded Vance Tower following the explosive leak of thousands of documents proving widespread real estate fraud, embezzlement, and the kidnapping of a rightful corporate heir..."

The broadcast cut out.

Vance’s voice returned, but this time, he wasn't smooth. He was screaming.

"What did you do?!" Vance roared over the intercom. "You son of a bitch! I'll kill them! I'll kill all of them!"

"The ledger you tried to burn was a decoy," Salvatore said, his voice entirely devoid of mercy. "I sent the real documents to the Chicago Tribune, the FBI, and the SEC three hours ago. Your bank accounts are frozen. Your jet is grounded on the tarmac surrounded by federal marshals. It is over, Richard."

Inside the observation room, the two men in white coats looked at each other, sheer panic setting in. They weren't loyal soldiers; they were mercenaries. And they had just realized their employer was utterly ruined.

Salvatore raised his gun, pointing it directly at the glass window, right at the chest of the nearest guard.

"Open the door," Salvatore ordered through the glass, his voice loud enough to penetrate the room. "Open it, or I shoot through the glass and you bleed out on a federal kidnapping charge."

The guard swallowed hard. He looked at the intercom, then at Salvatore's unwavering aim.

Slowly, the guard raised his hands, stepped backward, and hit the green release button on the wall.

The heavy magnetic lock disengaged with a loud click.

I didn't wait for Salvatore. I threw my weight against the heavy door, forcing it open, and practically dove into the room.

"Leo!" I screamed.

Leo scrambled up from the floor and crashed into my arms.

The impact knocked the breath out of me, but I didn't care. I buried my face in his hair, gripping him so tightly I thought I might break him. He was trembling violently, his small hands clutching the fabric of my tactical vest, burying his face in my neck.

I'm here, I signed rapidly against his back, letting him feel the movement of my hands. I'm here. You're safe. You're safe.

Behind me, Salvatore stepped into the room. He didn't even look at the guards as they scrambled past him, fleeing down the corridor to save themselves.

His eyes were locked entirely on the hospital bed.

He walked slowly toward it, dropping his gun onto a nearby steel tray. The clatter made me flinch, but Salvatore didn't notice.

He fell to his knees beside the bed.

Elena was barely conscious. Her skin was incredibly pale, her cheekbones hollow from years of forced sedation. But as Salvatore reached out and gently touched her face, her heavy eyelids fluttered open.

She looked at the man with the scar.

Her lips parted. A weak, raspy breath escaped.

"Sal...?" she whispered.

"I'm here, El," Salvatore choked out, tears finally breaking free, streaming down his scarred cheek. He gathered her frail upper body into his massive arms, burying his face in her shoulder. "I'm here. I found you. I'm so sorry it took so long."

I held Leo tightly, watching the most feared man in Chicago weep over the sister he had spent three years hunting for.

Then, heavy footsteps echoed from the far end of the corridor.

The blast doors hadn't fully sealed.

Standing in the doorway to the observation room, his expensive suit disheveled, a loaded silver revolver trembling in his hand, was Richard Vance.

He looked insane. The polished billionaire veneer had completely cracked, revealing the terrified, cornered rat underneath.

"Nobody moves!" Vance shrieked, aiming the revolver wildly between Salvatore and me. "I am not going to prison! You are going to give me the keys to that SUV, Marquetti, or I blow her head off right now!"

He pointed the gun directly at me.

Leo, sensing the vibration of the shouting, turned his head. When he saw Vance, he let out a terrified wail and buried his face deeper into my chest.

I stood up, pushing Leo behind me, placing my body entirely between the gun and my little brother.

I wasn't afraid.

Four years of exhaustion, of poverty, of watching my brother suffer in silence because of this man's greed—it all coalesced into a blinding, searing rage.

"You aren't going anywhere, Richard," I said, my voice eerily calm.

"Shut up!" Vance screamed, stepping closer. "You ungrateful little brat! I built this family! You and your mechanic father deserved to rot!"

"Drop the gun, Vance," Salvatore said.

He hadn't stood up. He was still kneeling beside Elena's bed. But he had retrieved his weapon from the steel tray, and it was aimed directly at the center of Vance's chest.

Vance laughed hysterically. "You shoot me, I pull this trigger, Marquetti! The girl dies!"

"You're forgetting something, Richard," Salvatore said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, lethal register.

"What?" Vance sneered.

"I don't play checkers," Salvatore replied softly.

Suddenly, a deafening crash echoed from the hallway.

The ceiling vent directly above Vance exploded downward in a shower of dust and metal.

Before Vance could even pull the trigger, a massive figure dropped from the ceiling, landing squarely on Vance’s shoulders.

It was Marcus.

The silver-haired security chief brought Vance to the ground with bone-crushing force. The silver revolver fired wildly into the ceiling, blowing out the fluorescent lights, plunging the room into chaotic darkness.

I dropped to the floor, covering Leo with my body.

There was the sickening sound of flesh hitting bone, a muffled groan, and then... silence.

The emergency backup lights flickered on, casting a dim red glow over the room.

Marcus stood up, adjusting his suit jacket.

Richard Vance lay unconscious on the floor, his nose shattered, the silver revolver kicked safely to the far corner of the room.

Marcus looked at Salvatore. "Bomb squad secured Brett. His daughter is safe at the safe house. And the FBI is pulling up to the front gates of this facility right now, Boss."

Salvatore stood up, carefully lifting Elena into his arms.

He looked down at Vance's unconscious body, his face entirely unreadable.

Then, he turned to me.

"It's over, Tessa," Salvatore said softly. "Let's go home."
