Chapter 6 - THE THREAD OF DECEIT

The heavy silver scissors slipped slightly in Sophie's hand as she pointed at the cream-colored thread.

Answer one: My mother hadn't hidden the foreclosure notice. Natalie had sewn it into the coat recently.

Open two: Why would Natalie hide her own father's foreclosure notice inside my mother's coat? And why was she so desperate to get the coat back tonight?

I looked up from the torn lining and locked eyes with Natalie.

The arrogant, untouchable corporate spy was completely unraveling. She wasn't standing proudly next to her father anymore. She was slowly backing away toward the edge of the red carpet.

"You hid this," I said, my voice rising over the chatter of the crowd. I held up the coat. "You wore my mother's coat tonight because you were using it as a mule."

Marcus Sterling whipped his head around to look at his daughter. "Natalie? What is she talking about?"

Natalie swallowed hard, looking desperately toward the valet stand. "Dad, let's just go. The deal is dead. Let the lawyers handle it."

"No," I stepped forward, blocking her path. "You aren't going anywhere."

I dug my hand back into the ripped lining of the coat. If Natalie had sewn the foreclosure notice inside to hide it, there was a reason.

My fingers brushed past the ripped pocket. Deeper inside the velvet, near the heavy hem, my hand hit something hard. A small, rectangular lump that didn't belong in a tailored garment.

I gripped it and ripped the lining the rest of the way open.

A small, black leather ledger fell out, hitting the concrete with a heavy thud.

Richard, still kneeling on the grass, looked up. His eyes widened in absolute horror.

"No," Richard breathed, scrambling forward on his hands and knees. "Claire, give me that! Don't open it!"

Reversal: Natalie wasn't hiding evidence of her father's crimes. She was hiding evidence of her own betrayal against her father.

I picked up the ledger and flipped it open.

It wasn't a diary. It was a handwritten record of offshore bank transfers. Millions of dollars, systematically drained from the Bennett Lakehouse construction fund.

But the routing numbers didn't point to Marcus Sterling's private equity firm.

They pointed to an account in the Cayman Islands. An account listed under the name N. Brooks.

I looked at Sterling. "She wasn't securing your investment, Mr. Sterling. She was stealing it."

Sterling snatched the ledger from my hands. He flipped through the pages, his face turning an alarming shade of purple as he read the numbers.

"Three million dollars," Sterling whispered, his voice trembling with genuine shock. He looked at his daughter, his eyes filled with a terrifying, cold fury. "You embezzled my money?"

Natalie took another step back, her hands raised defensively. "Dad, you promised me a partnership for five years! You kept passing me over for the board! I did all the ground work, I seduced this idiot—" she pointed a shaking finger at Richard "—and you were going to take all the profit from the casino deal!"

"So you stole the initial loan?" Sterling roared, slamming his cane against the pavement.

"I transferred it yesterday," Natalie spat, dropping the obedient daughter act completely. "I was going to fly out tomorrow morning. I hid the ledger and the default notice in the coat because I knew Richard would never look inside a dead woman's hand-me-down."

She turned her venomous glare toward Richard.

"But you had to be sentimental," she snarled at him. "You insisted I wear it tonight to rub it in Claire's face. You just couldn't resist being cruel, could you?"

Richard looked like he was going to vomit. He had betrayed his family for a woman who was actively robbing him blind.

The sound of approaching sirens wailed in the distance. The police had been called.

Natalie heard them, too.

She turned and bolted off the red carpet, sprinting in her high heels toward the dark parking lot.

Cliffhanger: "Let her go," Sterling ordered his security guards, his voice devoid of any paternal warmth. "She won't get far. I froze her offshore accounts this morning."

Sterling turned back to me, the anger fading into a chilling, calculated calm.

"Your mother outplayed me on the land, Claire," Sterling said. "And my daughter stole my capital. But Richard still owes me three million dollars. And since you are legally his wife..."

May you like

Sterling tapped his cane on the ground.

"...I'm coming after everything you have left."
