Chapter 11 - THE PROMISE MADE IN THE GARDEN

(Two Months Later)
The Tuscan sun bathed the sprawling stone villa in a warm, golden light.
I stood on the cobblestone terrace, wearing a light summer dress, looking out over the endless rows of grapevines that stretched toward the horizon.
It had been two months since we left Chicago.
Two months of absolute peace.
Anna and Grace were thriving. Without Celia’s toxic presence, Grace had blossomed into a confident, happy teenager. She and Anna spent their days exploring the local villages, making up for fifteen years of lost time.
And Luca…
Luca had changed. The harsh, ruthless edges of the mafia boss had softened under the Italian sun. He spent his mornings managing the syndicate’s legitimate shipping businesses from his study, and his afternoons walking through the vineyards with me.
“You look beautiful.”
I turned around.
Luca walked out onto the terrace. He wore a crisp white linen shirt, the top buttons undone, looking more handsome than any man had a right to be.
He walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist, pulling my back against his chest. He rested his chin on my shoulder, looking out at the sunset.
“I was just thinking about how quiet it is here,” I murmured, leaning into his embrace.
“Too quiet?” he asked, kissing the side of my neck.
“No,” I smiled, shivering slightly at his touch. “Perfectly quiet.”
He turned me around in his arms.
His dark eyes were serious, filled with an emotion that made my heart race.
“Emma, I’ve spent my entire life building walls,” Luca said softly. “I surrounded myself with guards, with money, with violence, because I thought that was the only way to keep my family safe.”
He reached up and gently stroked my cheek.
“But you walked into my house in a maid’s uniform and proved me wrong. You showed me that real strength is loyalty. Real strength is staying when the house is burning down.”
He stepped back.
And slowly, deliberately, the Don of the Chicago syndicate dropped to one knee on the stone terrace.
My hands flew to my mouth. “Luca.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.
He opened it.
Inside sat a breathtaking, vintage diamond engagement ring.
“I don't want you to just be my partner, Emma,” Luca said, looking up at me with absolute, unwavering love. “I want you to be my wife. I want to build a real family with you. Without secrets. Without lies.”
Tears of pure joy spilled down my face.
“Yes,” I breathed, nodding frantically. “Yes, Luca. A million times yes.”
He smiled—a bright, beautiful smile that reached his eyes—and stood up. He slid the ring onto my trembling finger, pulling me into a deep, passionate kiss that promised a lifetime of safety and love.
When we finally pulled apart, we heard a loud cheering from the balcony above.
We looked up.
Grace and Anna were standing on the second-floor balcony, clapping and wiping tears from their eyes. Daniel was standing behind them, a rare, genuine grin on his stoic face.
“It’s about time, boss!” Daniel shouted down.
Luca laughed, wrapping his arm securely around my waist.
“Come inside,” Anna called out happily. “Dinner is ready!”
We walked hand in hand back into the villa, the setting sun casting long, golden shadows across the stone floor.
I wasn't a maid anymore. I wasn't struggling to survive.

I was walking into a home that was finally, truly mine.
