Chapter 8 - THE TICKET FOUND BENEATH THE RUBBLE

The silence in the hallway was heavier than the smell of gunpowder.
I stared at the airline ticket in Luca’s hand.
“Anna?” I whispered, looking back toward the coatroom.
Anna stepped out of the shadows, her arm wrapped protectively around Grace. She looked just as confused as I felt.
“I haven't spoken to Marcus in fifteen years,” Anna said, her voice shaking. “Why would he buy a ticket for me?”
Luca didn't answer immediately. He looked down at his unconscious cousin on the marble floor.
“Answer one,” Luca said grimly, the gears in his mind turning rapidly. “Marcus didn't come here just to steal the money or kidnap Grace. He came to take Anna.”
He looked at his sister.
“Open two. If the cartel wanted me dead, why would they demand Marcus bring them a woman who has been exiled from this family for a decade and a half?”
Anna’s face drained of color.
“Julian,” she breathed.
Luca frowned. “Your mechanic boyfriend? The one my uncle killed fifteen years ago?”
“He wasn't just a mechanic, Luca,” Anna wept, shaking her head. “I lied to Celia to protect him. Julian was an undercover federal agent. He was investigating the cartel’s ties to the Chicago syndicate.”
My stomach dropped.
“When Celia’s husband found out Julian was a cop,” Anna continued, “he didn't just kill him to keep him away from me. He killed him to protect the family’s shipping routes. But Julian had hidden his evidence files before he died.”
She looked at the ticket in Luca’s hand.
“The cartel doesn't want me for leverage, Luca. They think I know where Julian hid the files fifteen years ago. If the FBI finds those files, the cartel’s entire North American operation burns.”
Everything finally made horrifying sense.
Marcus had promised the cartel he would deliver the only person who could find the missing evidence: Anna. Grace was just collateral damage, a way to force Anna out of hiding.
Before anyone could say another word, Daniel sprinted into the hallway from the basement.
“Boss, the police are breaching the front gates. We have thirty seconds before they swarm the house.”
Luca looked at the ruined foyer, the crushed mercenary, and his beaten cousin on the floor.
He made a decision instantly.
“Daniel, take Javier to the safehouse. Interrogate him. Find out exactly where the cartel is holding his daughter, then prep a strike team. We’re getting her back.”
Javier stared at Luca, tears of absolute shock and gratitude filling his eyes as Daniel pulled him to his feet.
“Anna, take Grace and go with Daniel,” Luca ordered. “You’ll be safe there.”
“What about you?” Anna asked, clutching her daughter.
“I have to stay and deal with the police. I can't let them find Marcus like this. They’ll ask too many questions.”
Luca turned to me.
“Emma. Go with them.”
I shook my head. “No, sir.”
Luca blinked, surprised by my defiance.
“Emma, this isn't a request. The house is a crime scene.”
“I’m the only staff member left,” I said firmly, standing my ground. “If the police walk in and find you alone with a bombed basement and a crushed mercenary, they’ll arrest you on suspicion. If I’m here, I can corroborate your story. I can tell them it was a home invasion.”
Luca stared at me. He saw the fierce, stubborn loyalty in my eyes—the same loyalty my mother had taught me.
“You’re risking everything for me,” Luca said softly.
“You protected me tonight,” I replied. “Let me protect you.”
Luca didn't have time to argue. Red and blue police lights began flashing fiercely against the shattered windows of the mansion.
“Go,” Luca ordered Daniel and Anna.
They disappeared down the hidden service corridor just as the heavy oak front doors were kicked open by a Chicago SWAT team.
“Chicago PD! Drop your weapons!”
Luca raised his hands smoothly, kicking his sidearm away. I raised my hands too, my heart pounding in my throat.
The next six hours were a blur of harsh lights, aggressive questions, and crime scene tape.
I sat in an interrogation room at the precinct, sticking rigidly to the story Luca and I had quickly agreed upon: A violent home invasion by unknown assailants attempting to rob the estate’s vault.
I told them I had dropped the chandelier in self-defense. They believed me. The trembling, terrified housemaid routine wasn't entirely an act.
By sunrise, Luca’s armada of high-priced lawyers had descended on the precinct, suffocating the detectives in legal red tape.
We were released without charges, pending further investigation.
Luca walked out of the precinct doors into the crisp morning air. He looked exhausted, his suit ruined, but he walked with the unbreakable posture of a king.
His black armored SUV was waiting at the curb.
He opened the passenger door for me.
“Get in, Emma,” Luca said gently.
I climbed inside, the adrenaline finally crashing, leaving me bone-tired.
Luca got into the driver’s seat. He didn't start the engine immediately. He just rested his hands on the steering wheel, staring out at the waking city.
“My uncle killed a federal agent,” Luca whispered, the weight of his family’s sins pressing down on him. “My cousin tried to blow up my house. My aunt stole my sister’s baby.”
He looked at me, his dark eyes filled with a profound, quiet sorrow.
“I’ve spent my entire life trying to legitimize this family. Trying to wash the blood off our name. And tonight, I realized the rot goes all the way to the foundation.”
I reached out, placing my hand over his on the steering wheel.
“You aren't them, Luca,” I said softly. “You saved Javier’s daughter. You saved Anna and Grace. You saved me.”
Luca looked down at my hand resting on his.
He turned his palm over, lacing his fingers through mine. His grip was warm, strong, and incredibly gentle.
“Emma,” Luca said, his voice thick with an emotion I had never heard from him before. “When I saw you holding that detonator… when I saw you risking your life for people you barely know…”
He reached into his jacket pocket with his free hand.
“I realized something.”
Luca pulled out a small, dark velvet box.
He placed it in my lap.
May you like
“Open it,” he said softly.
