Chapter 9 - THE HEIRLOOM RETURNED TO THE DAUGHTER

The velvet box was heavy.

I looked at Luca, my heart skipping a beat. “Sir, I can't accept—”

“Open it, Emma. Please.”

My hands trembled as I popped the tiny brass latch.

Inside rested a breathtaking diamond necklace. The stones were vintage, cut in an old-world style, catching the morning light filtering through the SUV windows.

It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

“This is the Moretti family heirloom,” Luca said quietly. “My grandfather bought it for my grandmother the day they arrived in America. It’s supposed to be worn by the matriarch of the family.”

I stared at the diamonds, completely overwhelmed.

“Why are you giving this to me?” I whispered.

Luca reached out, gently lifting my chin so I had to look into his eyes.

“Because my aunt wore it for thirty years, and she poisoned this family with lies,” Luca said. “I want it worn by someone who knows what loyalty actually means. Someone who stands her ground when the house is burning down.”

He didn't ask me to marry him. It wasn't a proposal. It was a promise. A declaration of profound respect and an invitation into a world he was trying to rebuild.

I carefully closed the box, holding it against my chest.

“Thank you, Luca,” I said, a tear slipping down my cheek.

He smiled, a genuine, rare smile that reached his eyes, and started the engine.

We drove to the safehouse downtown, a luxury penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan.

When we walked through the doors, the atmosphere was completely different from the chaos of the night before.

Anna was sitting on the sofa, brushing Grace’s hair. The little girl was leaning into her real mother’s touch, a peaceful smile on her face. They had lost fifteen years, but they were finally starting over.

Daniel was standing by the window, talking quietly on his radio.

When he saw Luca, he nodded sharply.

“Boss. The strike team hit the cartel safehouse an hour ago. Complete surprise.”

Luca’s jaw tightened. “And the little girl?”

“Safe and sound,” Daniel smiled. “We handed her over to Javier at a neutral location. He gave us the location of the cartel’s remaining drop houses in exchange. He’s taking his daughter back to Mexico. They’re gone.”

A wave of absolute relief washed over me. The cycle of violence had actually been broken for once.

“What about Marcus?” Luca asked coldly.

“He’s locked in the basement here,” Daniel said. “Awaiting your orders.”

“Let the cartel know we’re holding him,” Luca said without hesitation. “Tell them they can have him in exchange for tearing up the five-million-dollar debt. If they want their revenge, they can exact it on the man who stole from them.”

Daniel nodded. “Understood. It’s done.”

Luca walked over to Anna and Grace.

He sat down on the coffee table in front of them.

“Anna,” Luca said gently. “The estate is ruined. It will take months to repair the damage from the fire and the police raid. I’m moving the family to the villa in Tuscany until things settle down here.”

Anna looked at her brother, tears welling in her eyes. “You want us to come with you?”

“You are a Moretti,” Luca said firmly. “And Grace is my niece. No one is ever separating us again.”

Grace threw her arms around Luca’s neck, hugging him tightly.

“Thank you, Uncle Luca,” she whispered.

I watched them, my heart swelling with a bittersweet joy.

They were a family again. Healing, unbroken, and finally safe.

I quietly backed away, slipping out of the living room and heading toward the guest bedroom where I had dropped my few remaining belongings.

My job was done.

The birthday dinner was over. The crisis was averted.

I was just a maid who had gotten caught in the crossfire. They were going to Italy to rebuild their empire, and I needed to go back to my mother’s house in the suburbs to figure out how to pay the mortgage.

I picked up my small duffel bag, smoothing the wrinkles in my ruined housekeeper’s uniform.

I walked back out to the hallway, intending to slip out the front door before anyone noticed.

But as I reached for the brass handle, a large, warm hand closed over mine.

I froze.

Luca stood right behind me.

May you like

“Where do you think you’re going?” Luca asked softly.
