Chapter 2 - [SHE CAME FOR THE MASTER OF THE HOUSE]

“She was there to see your father.”
The words hung in the air like smoke.
Nobody moved.
In the dining room, the string quartet was playing a soft Vivaldi piece.
Thirty elite guests were sipping champagne, completely unaware that the foundation of the Moretti family was cracking in the kitchen.
Luca didn’t yell.
He didn’t throw anything.
That wasn’t who he was.
He simply looked at the woman he was supposed to marry in less than an hour.
“Is she lying?” he asked.
His voice was terrifyingly calm.
Vanessa stepped back.
The confidence that usually radiated from her red silk gown was completely gone.
“Luca, this is ridiculous. Your father was a businessman. I was a consultant for his firm.”
“You didn’t consult for his firm until I hired you,” Luca said. “Five years ago.”
Vanessa swallowed hard. “I did freelance work. Before you knew me.”
Maria didn’t shout.
She didn’t argue.
She just reached into the cracked glass casserole dish on the counter.
“Isabella knew something was wrong,” Maria said quietly. “Your mother wasn’t just sick, Luca. She was observant.”
Maria pulled out a small, folded piece of paper.
It was yellowed at the edges.
She handed it to Luca.
I watched his eyes scan the page.
I had been cleaning this house for nine months. I knew Luca Moretti’s faces.
I knew his business face.
I knew his polite society face.
But I had never seen the expression that washed over him now.
It was pure, hollow devastation.
“Where did you get this?” Luca whispered.
“Isabella taped it to the bottom of that dish the night before she went into hospice,” Maria said. “She told me to keep it safe. To only give it to you if Vanessa ever tried to take her place.”
Vanessa lunged for the paper. “Give me that!”
Luca caught her wrist.
He didn’t squeeze hard, but the warning was clear.
“Emma,” Luca said without looking at me.
“Yes, sir.”
“Go into the dining room. Tell my underboss, Matteo, to send the guests home. The engagement dinner is canceled.”
Vanessa gasped. “Luca, you can’t do this! Thirty of the most powerful people in Chicago are in there!”
“Tell him to lock the front gates after they leave,” Luca added.
My heart hammered against my ribs.
“Right away, sir.”
I turned to go, but before I reached the swinging door, Vanessa snapped.
“Fine!” she cried out. “I knew him! I knew your father!”
Luca stopped.
He let go of her wrist.
“But it wasn’t what you think,” Vanessa begged, her voice trembling. “I wasn’t his mistress, Luca. I was his victim.”
I froze at the door.
Maria frowned.
“Victim?” Luca repeated.
“He owed people,” Vanessa said rapidly, tears welling in her perfectly mascaraed eyes. “My family. He made a deal with my uncle and he didn’t pay. I came to this house to collect a debt. That’s all.”
It was a brilliant reversal.
In one breath, she went from a scheming mistress to a desperate girl trapped in mafia politics.
Luca looked at her, searching for the lie.
His father had been a ruthless man. Unpaid debts were entirely believable.
“A debt,” Luca repeated slowly.
“Yes,” Vanessa sobbed. “I swear on my life. I was only trying to survive. Your mother must have misunderstood why I was here.”
For a second, I thought Luca believed her.
Then Maria reached into the casserole dish one more time.
“If you were just collecting a debt,” Maria said gently, “then why did Isabella find this in your father’s bedroom?”
Maria pulled out a heavy object.
It clinked against the marble counter.
A solid gold pocket watch.
But it wasn’t just any watch.
I recognized it immediately.
Vanessa had told me to throw it in the incinerator three days ago.
I hadn’t done it. I had hidden it in the laundry room because it looked too expensive to destroy.
Luca stared at the watch.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Open it,” Maria whispered.
Luca picked up the heavy gold timepiece. He pressed the latch.
The lid popped open.
Inside the cover, an inscription was engraved in elegant script.
Luca read it aloud, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper.
May you like
“To the father of my son. Forever yours, Vanessa.”
