Chapter 12 - [THE END OF THE HOUSEKEEPER]

Later that evening, the house was finally quiet.

Maria had taken Leo upstairs to read him a bedtime story.

I was in the library, standing by the massive window, looking out over the moonlit gardens. The snow was beginning to fall softly, blanketing the estate in pure, untouched white.

I heard soft footsteps behind me.

I didn't need to turn around to know it was him.

Luca stepped up beside me. He didn't speak right away. We just stood there, side-by-side, watching the snow fall.

“Are you okay?” he asked quietly.

“I am,” I said. “It’s just... a lot to process. Waking up as Emma the housekeeper, and going to sleep as Emma the ward of the Moretti family.”

Luca let out a low chuckle.

“You’re not a ward, Emma.”

I turned to look at him. “What am I, then?”

He shifted his body so he was facing me completely. The moonlight caught the sharp angles of his jaw, highlighting the dark intensity of his eyes.

“You are the smartest, bravest woman I have ever met,” Luca said. “You stood up to Vanessa when you had everything to lose. You protected a little boy you didn't even know. You didn't flinch when the guns came out.”

He took a step closer. The space between us practically vanished.

“I spent the last five years thinking I had to marry a monster just to keep the peace in this syndicate,” Luca murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips. “I forgot what it felt like to actually trust someone.”

My breath hitched. “And you trust me?”

“With my life,” he said without hesitation.

He reached up and gently cupped my cheek. His thumb stroked my jawline, sending sparks shooting down my spine.

“I canceled a wedding tonight,” Luca whispered, leaning in so close I could feel the warmth of his breath. “And it was the best decision I ever made. Because it cleared the path for what I actually want.”

“What do you want, Luca?” I breathed.

He didn't answer with words.

He leaned down and pressed his lips to mine.

It wasn't a hesitant kiss. It was deep, confident, and overwhelmingly passionate. It was the kiss of a man who had finally found the piece of his soul he didn't know was missing.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, kissing him back with everything I had.

When we finally broke apart, we were both breathing heavily.

Luca rested his forehead against mine, a fierce, protective smile on his face.

“No more uniforms, Emma,” he whispered. “No more hiding in the staff quarters.”

I smiled back, my heart soaring higher than it ever had in my life.

“No more uniforms,” I agreed.

We stood by the window, watching the snow cover the tracks of the past, leaving a blank canvas for the beautiful, unpredictable future of the Moretti family.

The shoebox in the pantry was empty.

The vault was open.

The truth was told.
