Chapter 8 - THE CLOCHE

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a masterpiece of crystal, white roses, and gold trim.

At 2:00 PM on a Saturday, four hundred and ninety-eight guests were seated, waiting for the first course.

Standing by the main entrance, dressed in his immaculate tuxedo, was Arthur Vance.

He looked pale, nervous, and utterly oblivious to the storm about to hit him.

He had spent the morning lying to the police, claiming the gunshot in the penthouse was a misfire by a stressed security guard. He assumed Dante had killed Rosie and Lorenzo in the basement. He assumed he had won.

Rosie Hastings stood in the kitchen double doors, wearing a perfectly pressed new black suit.

She checked her earpiece.

“Mateo, is Leo safe?”

“Eating pancakes in my mother’s kitchen,” Mateo’s gruff voice replied over the comms. “Dante is currently tied to a chair in the basement. We are ready.”

Rosie took a deep breath.

For years, she had made herself small to survive in this hotel. She had let men like Vance take the credit while she did the work.

Not today.

She walked out into the ballroom.

Vance spotted her immediately.

The color drained entirely from his face. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Rosie didn’t look at him. She marched directly to the head table, signaling the waitstaff.

The synchronized service began. Waiters in white gloves flooded the room, carrying silver cloches covering the appetizer plates.

Vance scrambled across the floor, intercepting Rosie near the ice sculpture.

“How are you alive?” he hissed, his eyes darting frantically around the room. “Security!”

“Security isn’t coming, Arthur,” Rosie said calmly, adjusting a fork on a nearby table. “They’re currently having a very intense conversation with Lorenzo Bianca’s men in the loading dock.”

Vance panicked. He turned to run toward the lobby doors.

Standing in the doorway, wearing a tailored black suit over his bandaged shoulder, was Lorenzo.

He didn’t have a gun. He didn’t need one.

His presence alone made the room feel ten degrees colder.

Vance backed up, bumping into a waiter holding a silver cloche.

“What do you want?” Vance whispered to Rosie, terror sweating through his tuxedo.

“I want you to open it,” Rosie said, pointing to the silver dome on the small service table next to him.

Vance’s hands shook violently.

He reached out and lifted the silver cloche.

Underneath, there wasn’t a plate of imported truffles.

It was a heavy, leather-bound book.

The master ledger.

Rosie had opened the deposit box at 8:01 AM.

“Every wire transfer,” Rosie said softly, so only Vance could hear. “Every fake vendor invoice. Every dollar you stole from Lorenzo and washed through this hotel. It’s all documented. Mateo already emailed a copy to the federal prosecutor’s office, along with Dante’s full confession.”

Vance stared at the ledger, his chest heaving.

“You’ll go down with me,” he spat. “Your grandmother’s name is all over this! She was mafia property!”

“My grandmother was a survivor,” Rosie corrected him, her voice steady and proud. “And the deportation order you tried to use against us? Burned. You have nothing, Arthur. You are nothing.”

Before Vance could speak, the ballroom doors swung open again.

Two federal agents stepped into the room, their badges flashing in the ambient chandelier light.

They walked straight toward Vance.

“Arthur Vance? You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy.”

As they clamped the handcuffs on his wrists, Vance looked back at Rosie with pure hatred.

But Rosie didn’t even blink.

She turned her back on him and signaled the waitstaff.

“Bring out the champagne,” she ordered.

The wedding had to go on.

Lorenzo walked slowly over to her as Vance was dragged out of the room.

He looked at the woman who had orchestrated the entire downfall of his enemy without firing a single shot.

“You are terrifying, Miss Hastings,” Lorenzo said softly.

“I am a banquet manager, Mr. Bianca,” Rosie replied, a small smile finally breaking across her face. “I just hate when people mess with my seating charts.”
