Chapter 7 - THE GRAVELLY VOICE ON THE RADIO

The radio crackled with static, but the voice was unmistakable.
“Frank?” Luca whispered, the gun wavering in his hand for the first time all night.
I grabbed the railing of the staircase, my knees buckling with a sudden, overwhelming wave of hope. Frank was alive.
Richard Bellini stared at the small black radio in his hand as if it had suddenly turned into a venomous snake. The arrogant, composed mafia don looked genuinely horrified.
“Who is this?” Richard demanded into the radio, his voice losing its smooth cadence.
“I’m the mechanic,” Frank’s rough voice answered calmly over the radio. “And you’re parked in my driveway.”
A massive, deafening explosion rocked the estate.
The sound didn't come from inside the house. It came from the front gates. The shockwave rattled the crystal chandeliers in the hallway and shattered the window at the end of the corridor.
Richard stumbled backward, dropping the radio.
Luca didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, grabbing Richard by the lapels of his expensive suit and slamming him brutally against the wall, pinning his forearm across the older man’s throat.
“Marco!” Luca roared over the ringing in our ears.
Marco scrambled up the stairs, his weapon drawn. He grabbed Vanessa, who was screaming hysterically, and zip-tied her hands behind her back, shoving her to the floor next to her father.
“Watch them,” Luca ordered Marco, tossing Richard to the ground.
Luca grabbed my hand. “Come on!”
We ran down the grand staircase, bursting through the heavy mahogany front doors and out onto the sprawling front steps of the estate.
The scene outside was chaotic, illuminated by the flames of a burning vehicle near the main gates.
Richard Bellini’s fifty mercenaries were scattering in absolute panic.
They weren't running from the police. They were running from a small army of men pouring out of the surrounding woods, moving with precise, military efficiency.
And leading them, leaning heavily on a walking cane but standing tall in the driveway, was Frank Moretti.
“Dad!” Luca shouted, sprinting down the marble steps.
I ran right behind him, tears streaming down my face.
Frank turned as we approached. His shirt was soaked in blood from a nasty graze along his ribs, but he was alive. He was smiling.
Luca slammed into his father, wrapping his arms around the older man in a fierce, desperate embrace.
“You’re alive,” Luca choked out, burying his face in his father’s shoulder. “I thought Victor killed you.”
Frank hugged his son back tightly, patting his back. “It takes more than a coward in a suit to kill an old mechanic, son.”
He pulled back, looking at me. “And I had a very brave girl buy me enough time to play dead.”
I threw my arms around Frank’s neck, sobbing with pure relief. “I thought I lost you, Mr. Moretti.”
“I’m right here, sweetheart,” Frank chuckled softly, wincing slightly as he hugged me back.
Luca stepped back, wiping his eyes, and looked at the men securing the perimeter. They weren't standard mafia muscle. They were older, hardened men, armed with heavy tactical gear.
“Dad,” Luca said, confused. “Who are these men? Where did you find an army?”
Frank smiled, a proud, fierce glint in his eye.
“When I realized Victor was going to kill me tonight,” Frank explained, “I knew I couldn't rely on the current family guards. Victor had bought too many of them. So, when Hannah ran to the cellar, I played dead. When Victor left to chase her, I crawled to the old service phone in the pantry.”
Frank pointed to the men securing the mercenaries.
“I called the old guard, Luca,” Frank said quietly. “The men who served your mother thirty years ago. The men Victor exiled when he took over the finances. They’ve been waiting for a reason to come back for three decades.”
Luca stared at the men. These were the loyalists. The true believers in his mother’s legacy.
A burly man with gray hair and a scar across his cheek walked up to them, lowering his weapon.
“The perimeter is secure, Frank,” the man said respectfully. “Bellini’s mercenaries surrendered when we blew their command vehicle.”
“Thank you, Sal,” Frank nodded.
Luca looked at his father, awe and profound respect washing over his face.
“You organized a counter-siege while bleeding from a gunshot wound,” Luca said, shaking his head.
“I told you, son,” Frank smiled, leaning on his cane. “I know how to fix things when they’re broken.”
The sound of police sirens, much louder this time, wailed in the distance. The real authorities were finally arriving to clean up the mess.
“We need to get you inside, Dad,” Luca said, gently supporting his father’s arm. “The paramedics will be here in two minutes.”
We walked back up the marble steps and into the grand foyer.
Marco was waiting, standing guard over Richard and Vanessa Bellini, who were sitting on the floor in zip-ties.
When Richard saw Frank walk in alive, the arrogant don’s face drained of all color. He realized his entire empire had just collapsed.
“You’re finished, Richard,” Luca said coldly, looking down at the older man. “The ledgers are safe. Victor is in custody. And my father is alive. The Commission will dismantle your family by morning.”
Richard didn't say a word. He just stared at the floor, defeated.
Vanessa, however, looked up at Luca with desperate, pleading eyes.
“Luca, please,” Vanessa begged, crying softly. “I can help you. I can testify against my father. I can give you all his accounts. Just let me stay. I can still be your wife!”
Luca looked at the woman he had almost married. The woman who had tried to hide his father in the back row, and then tried to sell him out to save her own life.
“You were never going to be my wife, Vanessa,” Luca said softly. “You were just a business transaction. And the contract is terminated.”
He turned away from her, dismissing her entirely.
The paramedics rushed into the foyer, immediately surrounding Frank, checking his vitals and carefully bandaging his ribs.
I stood back, leaning against the marble wall, feeling the exhaustion of the night finally catching up to me. My legs felt like lead, and my hands were still shaking slightly.
Luca finished speaking with the lead detective and walked over to me.
He didn't look like a terrifying mafia boss anymore. He looked incredibly tired, but deeply, profoundly peaceful.
“You should go home, Hannah,” Luca said gently, stopping a few feet in front of me. “The police have your statement. You don't need to be here for the rest of this.”
I looked at him, my heart sinking slightly. He was dismissing me. The night was over, the crisis averted, and I was just the maid again.
“Yes, sir,” I said quietly, looking down at my blood-stained apron. “I’ll get my coat.”
I turned to walk toward the servant’s quarters.
“Hannah, wait,” Luca called out.
I stopped and turned back.
Luca reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, white envelope. He held it out to me.
“I want you to take this,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a low, private register.
I frowned, taking the envelope. It felt thick.
“What is it?” I asked.
“It’s a check,” Luca said softly. “Enough to pay off your car, cover your rent for the next five years, and send you to any culinary school you want to attend.”
I stared at him, stunned. “Mr. Moretti, I can’t accept this. This is too much.”
“You saved my father’s life tonight, Hannah,” Luca said, stepping closer, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath catch. “You ran into a wine cellar with a killer to protect my family’s legacy. There is not enough money in the world to repay that debt.”
He reached out, his large, warm hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear.
“But I’m giving you this money for a different reason,” Luca whispered.
“Why?” I breathed, my heart hammering against my ribs.
“Because tomorrow morning, I am stepping down as the head of the Moretti syndicate,” Luca said, the revelation hanging in the quiet foyer. “I am dismantling the illegal operations and taking the family legitimate. I am opening a restaurant. And I need a head chef.”
May you like
He smiled, a genuine, beautiful smile that completely transformed his face.
“I’m firing you as my maid, Hannah,” Luca said softly. “And I’m hoping you’ll accept the new position.”
