Chapter 11 - THE HOSPITAL BRACELET

Luca stepped back from the gate, his eyes darting from the little boy to the older woman.
“What is she talking about?” Margaret demanded, her voice pitching higher.
Antonio pointed directly at Margaret’s left hand.
“He remembers her,” I said, translating his rapid signs. “He says she has a burn scar on her left palm from a spilled coffee pot in the hospital forty years ago.”
Margaret instinctively curled her left hand into a fist and hid it in her coat pocket.
It was all the confirmation Luca needed.
“You’re not Vanessa’s mother,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. “Who is the boy?”
Margaret took a step back, her tough facade crumbling. “He’s your son! The DNA proves it!”
“If you’re lying about who you are, the DNA test is forged,” Luca snapped. He signaled to the guards. “Open the gate. Bring her inside. We’re calling the police.”
“No!” Margaret screamed. She turned to run, abandoning the child completely.
The little boy, Leo, started to cry, reaching for her. “Nana!”
The guards rushed out and grabbed Margaret before she could make it down the street. They dragged her back to the gate, kicking and screaming.
Luca knelt down in front of the crying boy. He didn't touch him, not wanting to frighten him further.
“Hey,” Luca said gently. “It’s okay. Nobody is going to hurt you.”
I knelt beside Luca. I looked at the boy’s wrist.
Peeking out from beneath his frayed jacket sleeve was a faded, plastic hospital bracelet. It was old, meant for a newborn, but it had been taped together to fit his growing wrist.
“Luca,” I pointed to the bracelet.
Luca gently reached out and turned the boy’s wrist.
The plastic band didn't have the name 'Leo Moretti' on it.
It had the name 'Leo Carter'.
My heart stopped.
I couldn't breathe. The air felt completely sucked out of the world.
“Carter?” Luca asked, looking at me. “Emily, is this...?”
I grabbed the boy’s hand, tears instantly blinding me.
“My mother,” I choked out, looking at the faded hospital band. “My mother had a baby four years ago. A late pregnancy. She was sick. The doctors said the baby died in the NICU.”
I looked up at Margaret, who was being held by the guards.
“You were the nurse,” I screamed, standing up. “You stole my brother!”
Margaret laughed bitterly, blood on her teeth. “Robert paid me to! He knew your mother was weak. He needed you entirely dependent on the maid’s salary. A dead baby meant more medical bills, more grief, more control.”
“Why bring him back now?” Luca roared.
“Because Robert’s money stopped coming!” Margaret yelled. “I thought I could trick the Morettis into paying me child support by claiming he was Vanessa’s!”
I dropped to my knees in the dirt, pulling Leo into my arms. I buried my face in his small shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably.
He was my brother. The baby we had mourned for four years. He was alive.
Leo hugged me back awkwardly, confused but desperate for comfort.
Luca stood over us, looking at Margaret with eyes that promised absolute destruction.
“Call the federal prosecutor,” Luca told the guards. “Add kidnapping and child trafficking to Robert Bellini’s charges. And throw this woman in the same cell.”
As the guards dragged Margaret away, Luca knelt down beside me in the dirt.
He didn't care about his expensive suit. He didn't care about the mud.

He put his arm around my shoulders, shielding me and my brother from the cold wind.
“Let’s go inside, Emily,” Luca said softly. “Let’s take your brother home.”
