Chapter 12 - THE SOUND OF SILENCE

The snow began to fall on Christmas Eve, blanketing the Moretti estate in a peaceful, brilliant white.
Inside the mansion, the fireplace roared in the grand living room. The oppressive atmosphere that had choked this house for two decades was completely gone, replaced by the smell of pine and roasting garlic.
I sat on the thick Persian rug, helping Leo stack wooden blocks.
He had adjusted to his new life with incredible speed. My mother, now fully recovered and living in a beautiful guest cottage on the property, spoiled him rotten. My older brother, home from his first semester at the deaf academy, was currently teaching Leo how to sign the alphabet.
The trauma of the Bellinis was behind us. Robert and his accomplices were locked away for life.
I looked up as Luca walked into the room. He was wearing a casual gray sweater, looking relaxed and younger than his thirty-six years.
He held two mugs of hot cocoa. He handed one to me and sat down on the rug beside us.
“He’s getting fast,” Luca noted, watching Leo perfectly mimic the ASL sign for 'C'.
“He’s incredibly smart,” I smiled, taking a sip of the cocoa.
Across the room, Isabella and Antonio were sitting on the sofa. Isabella was knitting, and Antonio was reading a book.
Antonio looked up from his pages. He caught my eye and smiled.
He set his book down and signed slowly.
Thank you.
I signed back. For what?
Antonio gestured to the room. To Isabella, to Luca, to my family.
For listening when nobody else would.
I felt a lump form in my throat. I smiled and nodded.
Luca watched the exchange. Over the last few months, he had been quietly studying. He wasn't fluent yet, but he was learning.
Luca raised his hands, a little clumsy, but determined.
He signed to his grandfather. I love you, Nonno.
Antonio’s eyes filled with tears. He signed it back.
Luca turned to me. The firelight caught the warmth in his dark eyes.
“You changed everything, Emily,” Luca said softly. “You saved my mother. You saved my grandfather. You brought life back into this house.”
“I just translated,” I whispered, looking down at my mug.
Luca reached out and gently tilted my chin up, forcing me to meet his gaze.
“You did more than that,” Luca said.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
My breath hitched.
He didn't open it immediately. He just held it in his palm.
“I spent my whole life surrounded by people who lied to me,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “Vanessa, Robert, my father’s associates. The first time I heard the truth in this house... it came from you.”
He opened the box.
Inside wasn't a massive, gaudy diamond like the one Vanessa used to wear.
It was a simple, elegant silver band, set with a small, perfect sapphire.
“I don't want a maid, Emily,” Luca said softly. “I want a partner. I want the woman who was brave enough to stand up to a monster to protect an old man.”
The room went completely still.
Leo stopped stacking blocks. My brother smiled. Isabella put her knitting down.
I looked at the ring, then at the man who had saved my family just as much as I had saved his.
I didn't need to speak out loud.
I raised my hands, tears spilling down my cheeks, and made the sign for 'Yes'.
Luca smiled, a genuine, breathtaking smile. He took the ring from the box and slipped it onto my finger.
It was a perfect fit.
He leaned in and kissed me, the warmth of the fire washing over us.

For the first time in my life, the silence wasn't scary. It wasn't something to be translated or fixed.
It was perfect.
