Chapter 6 - THE TRAPDOOR IN THE FLOOR

The frail hand clutched the edge of the floorboards, the rusted rosary dangling in the dim light.

Luca didn't hesitate. He rushed past the fake Isabella, dropped to his knees, and grabbed the trapdoor, ripping it completely off its hinges.

A terrible, musty smell rose from the dark space between the attic floor and the ceiling below.

Luca reached down into the darkness.

“I’ve got you,” he whispered.

He pulled gently. A figure emerged into the light.

She was incredibly frail, dressed in ragged clothes that had once been a heavy winter coat. Her hair was completely white, her face lined with decades of suffering.

But as she looked up at Luca, her eyes—bright, piercing blue—were unmistakable.

It was Isabella Moretti. The real one.

Luca pulled her into his arms, wrapping his jacket around her trembling shoulders.

“Mom,” he choked out, holding her tight.

Isabella rested her head against his chest. “My beautiful boy,” she whispered. “I knew you would find me.”

At the bottom of the stairs, Robert Bellini’s face drained of all color.

“That’s impossible,” Robert stammered. “I told them to get rid of her twenty years ago!”

Vanessa looked at her father in horror. “You told me she was dead! You told me the woman we hired was just a prop!”

“Shut up!” Robert hissed at his daughter. He looked up at Luca. “Luca, listen to me. Your father begged me to hide her. She was sick, she was—”

“Save it,” Luca said softly. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't have to.

Luca stood up, leaving his mother safely seated on the floor. He walked to the top of the stairs and looked down at the armed men.

“Those guns are pointed at my family,” Luca said to the guards. “I am Luca Moretti. If you pull those triggers, there isn't a hole deep enough on this earth for you to hide in.”

The guards looked at each other. They lowered their weapons.

Robert panicked. He grabbed the silver handgun from Vanessa’s hand and pointed it up the stairs.

“Nobody moves!” Robert screamed.

I stood frozen in front of Antonio, shaking uncontrollably.

Then, Antonio did something incredible.

He didn't sign. He didn't hide.

The 79-year-old man reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, heavy brass key.

He threw it down the stairs.

It bounced off the wooden steps and landed perfectly at Robert’s feet.

Robert looked down at it. “What is this?”

Antonio signed quickly to me.

I translated, my voice echoing in the stairwell.

“He says... it’s the key to the Bellini family vault. The one you thought you lost ten years ago. He says he knows exactly what you’ve been hiding inside it.”

Robert’s eyes widened in sheer terror.

And then, Robert turned the gun away from us.

He pointed it directly at his own daughter, Vanessa.
