Chapter 10 - THE FINAL BETRAYAL

The standoff in the underground chamber was terrifyingly still.

Matteo, clutching his bleeding shoulder, glared at Daniel with pure hatred.

“You’re a dead man, Daniel,” Matteo hissed.

“Probably,” Daniel shrugged. “But you’re dying first.”

He adjusted his grip on the pistol, preparing to execute the New York boss.

Answer one. Open two.

Daniel was playing both sides. But if he killed Matteo, we were next.

Luca didn’t waste the distraction.

With reflexes honed from a lifetime in a brutal world, Luca lunged forward.

He didn’t attack Daniel.

He kicked the dropped shotgun directly toward my father.

“Dad, shoot!” I screamed.

My father, relying on muscle memory from a career thirty years dead, dove to the dirt floor, grabbed the shotgun, and racked the slide in one fluid motion.

He aimed it squarely at Daniel.

“Drop it, son,” my dad commanded, his voice carrying the undeniable authority of a seasoned cop.

Daniel froze.

He looked at the shotgun leveled at his chest, then at the pistol in his own hand.

“You won’t shoot a man in cold blood, old man,” Daniel sneered.

“I’m not a cop anymore,” my dad said, his finger tightening on the trigger. “I’m a father protecting his daughter. Try me.”

Daniel’s eyes flicked to me.

He saw the absolute resolve in my father’s face.

Slowly, Daniel lowered his pistol and dropped it to the dirt.

Luca immediately stepped forward, kicking the gun away and grabbing Daniel by the collar, slamming him hard against the brick wall.

“You’re done, Daniel,” Luca growled.

Matteo, leaning against the wall and bleeding heavily, started to laugh.

“Beautiful,” Matteo coughed. “A regular family reunion.”

Luca turned to his brother.

“Your men are upstairs tearing apart an empty house. You’re bleeding out in a Prohibition tunnel. Call them off, Matteo. Now.”

Matteo looked at Luca. He saw the fire, the ruthless leadership that Antonio had always known was there.

“You finally grew some fangs, little brother,” Matteo smirked.

He pulled a radio from his pocket and pressed the button.

“Fall back,” Matteo ordered into the mic. “The house is empty. We’re leaving Chicago.”

He tossed the radio to the ground.

“I need a doctor, Luca.”

“You’ll get one in federal prison,” Luca said.

He pulled out his phone. There was barely any signal, but enough to send an SOS ping to the loyal lieutenants in his syndicate and the FBI task force he had cooperated with.

Within twenty minutes, the tunnels were swarming with tactical teams.

Matteo was stretchered out under heavy guard.

Daniel was handcuffed and dragged away.

My father and I sat on the bumper of an ambulance near the riverbank, wrapped in foil shock blankets.

The sun was just beginning to rise over the Chicago skyline, casting a golden glow over the water.

Luca walked over to us.

His suit was ruined, covered in dirt and brick dust. He had a cut above his eye.

He had never looked more handsome.

He sat down next to me on the bumper.

“It’s over,” Luca said softly. “Carlo’s extortion is fully exposed. Matteo is in custody. The syndicates are crippled. You’re safe, Anna. Both of you.”

I looked at him, the exhaustion finally catching up to me.

“What happens now?” I asked.

Luca looked out at the river, then turned his dark, intense eyes to mine.

“Now, I rebuild,” he said.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small, tarnished brass key Leo had found in the ashes.

The key that started it all.

“And I was hoping,” Luca whispered, reaching out to gently take my hand, “that you’d help me.”

Cliffhanger.

He wasn’t offering me a job.

May you like

He was offering me a life.
