Chapter 11 - THE CONFESSION HIDDEN IN THE MAID’S APRON

My hands shook as I broke the wax seal on the envelope.
I pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment paper.
“What does it say?” Luca asked, standing close enough that I could smell his expensive cologne.
I began to read Antonio’s handwriting aloud.
“Emma. If you are reading this, the Bellini threat has been eliminated. I knew Vanessa was a spy the moment she stepped into this house three years ago.”
I stopped, my jaw dropping. I looked up at Luca.
Luca looked just as shocked. “He knew? For three years?”
I looked back down and kept reading.
“I played the fool. I let her hide my hearing aids. I let her bring the doctor. I needed Victor to think I was weak so he would overplay his hand and expose his network. But I also knew I needed a catalyst. I needed someone inside the house who was loyal, brave, and smart enough to blow the lid off her plan when the time was right.”
I swallowed hard.
“I specifically instructed HR to hire Sarah Hayes’s daughter. I put you in that dining room, Emma. I knew your mother raised a fighter. I am sorry for using you, but you saved my family. Now, it is time for me to save yours.”
I reached into the envelope. There was another piece of paper folded inside.
I pulled it out.
It was a legal deed.
“What is that?” Luca asked, leaning in.
“It’s a deed,” I whispered, reading the legal jargon. “To a commercial property downtown. A massive restaurant space.”
I looked at Luca, tears blurring my vision.
“My mother always wanted to open a restaurant,” I said, my voice cracking. “Before she had to go into hiding. It was her dream.”
“My father bought it for you,” Luca said softly. “Free and clear.”
I clutched the deed to my chest. The weight of the last seventeen years, the poverty, the fear, the running—it all washed away in an instant.
Antonio hadn't just used us as pawns. He had set us up for the rest of our lives.
Luca reached out and gently wiped a tear from my cheek with his thumb. His touch was warm and incredibly tender.
“Emma,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a whisper.
I looked up into his dark eyes.
“You don't have to work here anymore,” Luca said. “You own a restaurant now. You’re set.”
“I know,” I breathed.
“But I want you to stay,” he said fiercely. His hand slid from my cheek to the back of my neck, holding me gently but firmly.
“As the estate manager?” I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.
“No,” Luca said.
He leaned down, his forehead resting against mine.
“As my equal,” Luca whispered. “As my partner. I don't want to run this family without you.”
He kissed me.
It wasn't a hesitant, polite kiss. It was deep, hungry, and full of the massive, unspoken tension that had been building between us since the night the chandelier fell.
I kissed him back, wrapping my arms around his neck, anchoring myself to the man who had just changed my entire world.
When we finally pulled apart, we were both breathless.
Luca smiled, a real, genuine smile that reached his eyes.
“So,” Luca murmured. “Are you staying?”
“Try and make me leave,” I challenged softly.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study swung open.
Antonio rolled his wheelchair into the room, followed by my mother.
Antonio took one look at me and Luca standing inches apart, my lipstick slightly smeared, and Luca looking happier than he had in years.
The old mob boss let out a loud, booming laugh.
May you like
“Well,” Antonio smiled, tapping his cane against the floor. “It’s about damn time.”
