Chapter 10 - THE FAMILY HEIRLOOM LEFT IN THE KITCHEN

Two weeks later, the Moretti estate was unrecognizable.

The corrupt staff had been violently purged. Dr. Harris’s partner was indicted. Victor and Vanessa Bellini were sitting in federal lockup, facing multiple life sentences after Antonio anonymously delivered the true ledger to the FBI.

The wedding was, obviously, cancelled.

I stood in the massive, sunlit kitchen of the main house. I wasn't wearing a black housekeeping dress. I was wearing a tailored navy blazer and slacks.

Luca had fired the estate manager and immediately given the job to me.

“Emma,” a warm voice called out.

I turned. Elena Moretti walked into the kitchen. She looked vibrant, healthy, and completely in her element. She had reclaimed her house with the grace of a queen returning from exile.

“Good morning, Mrs. Moretti,” I smiled.

“Elena, please,” she corrected gently, touching my arm. “If it weren't for you and your mother, I would still be a ghost in that cottage.”

My mother, Sarah, was sitting at the kitchen island, sipping a cup of coffee. She had moved into the main house. Antonio insisted she never work another day in her life, granting her a massive pension and a permanent suite on the second floor.

“Where is Antonio this morning?” my mother asked.

“In the garden,” Elena smiled fondly. “With proper hearing aids. He can hear the birds again. And he hasn't misplaced his cane in a week.”

Luca walked into the kitchen.

He stopped when he saw me. The bruising on his face had faded to a pale yellow, but his eyes were bright and focused. Every time he looked at me now, there was a heavy, electric tension in the air.

“Morning,” Luca said, his voice dropping a fraction of an octave.

“Good morning, boss,” I teased.

He rolled his eyes, walking over to the island. He was carrying something wrapped in heavy velvet.

He placed it on the marble counter in front of my mother.

“Sarah,” Luca said seriously. “My father and I wanted to give this to you. Officially.”

My mother frowned, pulling back the velvet.

It was a massive, heavily tarnished silver serving tray. It looked ancient, engraved with the Moretti family crest—a lion and a shield.

“A tray?” my mother asked, confused.

“It’s not just a tray,” Elena said softly. “It’s the First Plate. In our family tradition, whoever holds that tray is considered blood. It means you eat before the boss. It means this house is yours, forever.”

My mother stared at the silver tray. For a woman who had spent her life serving others, being told she was family broke her. She covered her mouth, tears spilling over her hands.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

Luca looked at me.

“Emma, walk with me to the office. I need you to review the new security payroll.”

“Of course.”

I followed him out of the kitchen, down the long hallway toward Antonio’s massive study.

The house felt entirely different. It didn't feel like a fortress of secrets anymore. It felt like a home.

We stepped into the study. Luca closed the heavy oak door behind us.

He didn't walk to his desk. He stopped in the center of the room and turned to me.

“I lied,” Luca said quietly. “I don't have the payroll documents.”

I blinked, my heart suddenly beating a little faster. “You don't?”

“No.” Luca took a step closer to me. The space between us suddenly felt incredibly small.

“I asked you in here because I found something last night,” Luca said.

He reached into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out a heavy, sealed white envelope.

“I was cleaning out the secret safe behind my father’s bookshelf,” Luca explained, his eyes searching my face. “I found this. It’s addressed to you.”

He handed me the envelope.

I looked down. My name was written on the front in Antonio’s sharp, jagged handwriting.

May you like

“Open it,” Luca said softly.
