Chapter 5 - THE TARNISHED CLASP

My breath caught in my throat, but I didn’t look away.
I knew that braided bracelet.
It wasn’t just a random piece of stolen silver. My mother had appraised that exact design at the pawn shop six years ago. It was a 19th-century Florentine weave. The clasp on the underside was uniquely shaped like a lion’s head.
Marco had stolen from the Moretti collection and put it right on his own wrist, assuming no one in the house knew enough about antique jewelry to recognize it.
He didn’t know about the pawn shop.
Marco caught me staring at his wrist.
His eyes locked onto mine.
Slowly, deliberately, he pulled his suit sleeve down, covering the silver. His expression didn’t change, but his eyes went dead. Cold.
It was a silent, unmistakable threat.
Speak, and you die.
My heart hammered against my ribs. I was alone in a room with a grieving mafia boss, a hysterical fiancée, and a heavily armed traitor who controlled all the security cameras and the locked doors.
If I pointed at Marco right now, he would draw his weapon before Luca could react. He might shoot us both.
I had to tell Luca without telling Marco.
“Emma,” Luca said, his voice exhausted. “What is it?”
I forced myself to look away from Marco and met Luca’s eyes.
I needed to use a language only someone who owned the silver would understand.
“Sir,” I said, keeping my voice steady and professional. “I was just thinking about the appraisal documentation Mrs. Bellini mentioned.”
Luca frowned. “There is no appraisal.”
“I know,” I said. “But to fence the collection, the buyer at Southside Brokers would have required a verified inventory list. Especially for the Florentine pieces.”
I took a slow step toward the dining table, putting a heavy mahogany chair between myself and Marco.
“For example,” I continued, staring directly into Luca’s dark eyes, “the braided weave bracelet from the third drawer. The one with the tarnished lion’s head clasp.”
Luca’s brow furrowed slightly. He knew the piece I was talking about. It was one of his favorites.
“What about it?” Luca asked.
“When I was polishing it last month, I noticed the clasp was slightly loose,” I lied smoothly. “If it fell off somewhere in the house today, it would be a shame. Have you seen it?”
I let my eyes flick toward Marco for a fraction of a second, then back to Luca.
Have you seen it?
Luca was a man who survived the Chicago underworld by reading between the lines. He saw the tension in my posture. He saw the tiny dart of my eyes.
His expression didn’t change. He didn’t gasp. He didn’t look at Marco.
But I saw the exact moment his brain registered the warning. The muscles in his jaw tightened.
“No, Emma,” Luca said softly. “I haven’t seen it.”
He turned his back to Marco, pretending to look down at Vanessa, who was still weeping on the floor.
“Vanessa,” Luca sighed, playing the part of a defeated man perfectly. “Get up. I’m calling the police.”
He reached into his jacket pocket, as if reaching for his phone.
But he didn’t pull out a phone.
In one fluid, lightning-fast motion, Luca spun around, drawing a concealed 9mm handgun from his shoulder holster, aiming it directly at his head of security.
“Hands away from your jacket, Marco,” Luca ordered, his voice echoing like thunder.
Marco froze. His hand had been halfway to his own waist.
Vanessa screamed, scrambling backward until her back hit the wall.
“Boss,” Marco said, his voice dangerously calm. “What are you doing?”
“Take off the jacket,” Luca commanded. “Slowly.”
Marco stared down the barrel of Luca’s gun. He knew Luca never missed.
Slowly, Marco raised his hands, unbuttoning his suit jacket and letting it slide off his shoulders onto the floor.
The braided Florentine silver bracelet gleamed brightly on his wrist.
Luca looked at the bracelet. Then at the man who had guarded his life for a decade.
“You helped her,” Luca said. The betrayal in his voice was absolute. “You bypassed the safe. You arranged the meeting with Southside Brokers. You carried the silver out the front door.”
Marco didn’t deny it. He just smiled. A cold, ugly smile.
“She was an easy mark, Boss,” Marco sneered, glancing down at Vanessa. “A desperate little rich girl terrified of loan sharks. She came to me begging for a loan. I told her I couldn’t lend her money, but I could show her how to take yours.”
“You bastard!” Vanessa shrieked. “You told me you were protecting me!”
“I was protecting my retirement,” Marco laughed.
Then, Marco’s eyes shifted from Luca to the hallway behind me.
“But I’m not leaving empty-handed.”
Before I could turn around, Marco whistled sharply.
Two of Marco’s hand-picked security guards stepped into the dining room.
But they weren’t pointing their guns at Marco.
They were pointing them at Luca.

And one of them was holding Leo by the collar of his dinosaur pajamas.
