Chapter 12 - THE MAID’S LEVERAGE

The bosses stared at the key.

“My mother was a cleaner at St. Vincent’s,” I said, folding my hands on the table. “Nine years ago, Richard Bellini paid off doctors to cover up a hit-and-run. My mother hid the evidence.”

“We know about the Bellini cover-up, girl,” Carmine scoffed. “Old news.”

“The hit-and-run is old news,” I agreed. “But my mother was a very thorough cleaner. She didn’t just keep Bellini’s secrets. She kept everyone’s.”

I leaned forward.

“She cleaned the VIP recovery rooms. She found the bloody shirt Don Carmine left behind when his nephew was shot in a ‘hunting accident’. she found the burner phones the Falcone family tossed in the incinerator. She kept it all. Receipts. Blood. Audio recordings. It’s all in that locker.”

The color drained from Carmine’s face. The other bosses shifted nervously.

“You’re bluffing,” Carmine whispered.

“Try me,” I said. “The locker is set to a dead-man’s switch. If anything happens to Luca, or to me, the contents are mailed directly to the FBI.”

I wasn’t bluffing. Marco had spent the last three days emptying my mother’s hidden lockboxes across the city. She had been quietly gathering insurance for years to protect my sister and me.

Luca looked at me, a slow, proud smile spreading across his face.

“So,” Luca said, leaning back in his chair. “Are we still discussing dividing my territory?”

Nobody spoke.

Carmine slowly pushed the key back across the table toward me.

“The Moretti territory remains intact,” the old man muttered.

“And the wedding?” Luca asked.

“We send our blessings,” another boss choked out.

I picked up the key, dropped it back into my pocket, and stood up. Luca stood with me. We walked out of the room, leaving the most dangerous men in the city sitting in stunned, terrified silence.

Six months later, the sun shone brightly over the Moretti estate.

The gardens were covered in white roses, not the blood-red ones Vanessa had demanded.

I stood in the bridal suite, looking at myself in the mirror. I wore a simple white silk gown. My sister Sarah stood behind me, fixing my veil, tears in her eyes.

A knock sounded at the door.

It opened, and little Lucy peeked inside. She was wearing a pale pink flower girl dress, holding a basket of petals.

“You look like a princess,” she whispered.

“You look pretty beautiful yourself,” I smiled, kneeling down to hug her.

Anna stepped into the doorway, looking healthy, radiant, and finally at peace. “It’s time, Emma.”

I took a deep breath.

I walked out to the gardens, the string quartet playing softly. And there, standing at the altar under a canopy of white flowers, was Luca.

He didn’t look like a mafia boss today. He looked like a man who had finally found his way out of the dark.

When I reached him, he took both of my hands in his. His thumb brushed over my mother’s silver bracelet.

“You saved my life,” he whispered as the priest began to speak.

“You saved mine,” I whispered back.

We exchanged our vows. Not promises of power or syndicate alliances, but promises of loyalty, protection, and love.

When he finally kissed me, the crowd erupted in applause. I looked out at the faces—my sister, Anna, Lucy cheering wildly, Marco smiling.

I was no longer the maid standing in the shadows. I was Emma Moretti. And I was exactly where I belonged.
