Chapter 10 - THE HEIRLOOM RING

I stared at the dark blue velvet box.

“Luca, what is that?”

“When my grandfather came to America, he had nothing but the clothes on his back and a gold ring he bought for my grandmother,” Luca said, his voice deep and steady.

He popped the box open. Inside sat a modest, beautiful ruby surrounded by worn gold filigree.

“Vanessa refused to wear it,” he continued. “She said it was too small. Too old. She demanded a five-carat diamond to prove her status to the council.”

I couldn’t look away from the ruby. “It’s beautiful.”

“It belongs to someone who understands what loyalty actually costs,” Luca said. He looked up, his dark eyes locking onto mine. “It belongs to you.”

My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I took a step back, bumping into the marble island.

“Luca, you can’t. I’m an employee. Two days ago, I was serving soup to your fiancée.”

“I don’t care.”

“The syndicate cares!” I argued, panic rising in my chest. “You just dismantled the Bellini family. The council is going to demand a new alliance. They expect you to marry power, not the girl who polishes the silverware!”

Luca closed the distance between us. He didn’t touch me, but his presence was overwhelming.

“The council answers to me,” he said softly. “And I am done living my life for them. I spent ten years believing I had to be cold to protect the people I loved. I let Richard Bellini dictate my future. I’m not doing it anymore.”

He reached out and gently took my hand. His thumb brushed over my knuckles, rough from cleaning chemicals.

“You stood between a loaded gun and a child,” he whispered. “You threw a piece of iron at a murderer to save my life. You have more fire and loyalty in your little finger than the entire syndicate combined.”

Tears prickled the corners of my eyes. “I don’t belong in your world, Luca.”

“Then we’ll build a new one.”

He slid the ring onto my finger. It slid perfectly over my knuckle, settling into place as if it had been forged for me.

“Stay, Emma,” he said, his voice suddenly vulnerable. “Stay with me.”

I looked down at the ring, then up at the man who had torn his own life apart to do the right thing.

“I’ll stay,” I whispered.

He exhaled a breath he seemed to have been holding for years, pulled me into his chest, and finally kissed me. It wasn’t a rush of adrenaline; it was a slow, deep promise.

But peace in the mafia is never permanent.

The next morning, I walked down to the foyer to find Marco standing by the front doors, looking grim.

In his hand, he held a heavy cream-colored envelope sealed with black wax.

“What is it, Marco?” I asked, my stomach tightening.

“A summons,” Marco said, holding it out. “The Five Families have called a council meeting for tonight.”

He turned the envelope over.

It wasn’t addressed to Luca.
