Chapter 3 - THE DEAD MAN AT THE DOOR

Anthony Rizzo looked older than Vincent remembered.

Not weaker.

Older.

There was a difference.

His hair had gone mostly gray.

The scar along his jaw had deepened.

He walked with a slight stiffness in his left leg.

But the eyes were the same.

Dark.

Watchful.

Always measuring exits.

Vincent stood in the center of the foyer.

Anthony stopped twelve feet away.

Luca Russo stood beside him.

Neither man was armed visibly.

Vincent knew better than to assume that meant unarmed.

For ten full seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Anthony said:

“You got old.”

Vincent answered:

“You got buried.”

Anthony almost smiled.

“Fair.”

Vincent did not.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You watched Isabella’s funeral.”

Anthony’s face changed.

“Yes.”

“From where?”

“Roof across the street.”

Vincent’s hands tightened.

Frank looked down.

Anthony continued before Vincent could speak.

“I wanted to come down.”

“But?”

“Salvatore stopped me.”

Vincent glanced toward his consigliere.

No denial.

Anthony looked at Vincent.

“If I came back, whoever ordered the blast knew I survived.”

“You thought I couldn’t protect you?”

“No.”

Anthony’s voice softened.

“I thought you’d kill everybody before we knew who deserved it.”

Maggie, standing near the staircase, whispered:

“Apparently Isabella had the same concern.”

Vincent looked at her.

She raised one eyebrow.

He had no defense.

Anthony noticed Ruby.

His face changed.

“Daniel’s girl?”

Maggie immediately stepped in front of her.

“How do you know my daughter?”

Anthony stopped.

“Daniel showed me a picture once.”

“When?”

“Before he died.”

“Why?”

“He was scared.”

Maggie’s jaw tightened.

“So everyone knew he was scared except his wife.”

Anthony looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

“That’s becoming a theme.”

Vincent almost smiled.

Then Luca stepped forward.

“We came because Adriana called.”

Vincent turned.

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“From where?”

“This house.”

“She’s still here.”

Luca stared.

“What?”

Vincent looked toward Frank.

“Find her.”

Frank moved.

Luca’s face hardened.

“She said Anthony was inside.”

Anthony looked confused.

“I wasn’t.”

Vincent looked at him.

“Did you give Adriana your rosary?”

“No.”

Vincent pulled it from his pocket.

Anthony’s composure vanished.

He took one step forward.

“Where did you get that?”

“Under Isabella’s piano.”

Anthony stared.

“My rosary.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Ruby watched Adriana drop it yesterday.”

Ruby corrected:

“She didn’t drop it first.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Vincent asked.

Ruby pointed toward the piano room.

“She put it on the floor.”

Vincent’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Was she hiding it?”

Ruby thought.

“She put it under there after she talked on the phone.”

Anthony’s face went cold.

“Planting it.”

Vincent looked at Adriana’s brother.

Luca shook his head.

“Why would she frame Anthony?”

Anthony laughed bitterly.

“Maybe ask your sister.”

Frank returned quickly.

“She’s gone.”

Luca swore.

Vincent’s voice sharpened.

“How?”

“East service hall.”

“Gate?”

“Still closed.”

“Then where?”

“Chapel tunnel.”

Vincent turned toward Salvatore.

Few people knew that tunnel.

Salvatore closed his eyes.

“I told her.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“Why?”

“She asked about emergency routes before the wedding.”

Vincent laughed without humor.

“Of course.”

Luca said:

“Adriana wouldn’t run unless she was afraid.”

Anthony looked at him.

“She’s been afraid for four years.”

Luca turned.

“What does that mean?”

Anthony glanced toward Maggie.

Then Vincent.

“Daniel Flynn tried to give Adriana evidence.”

Maggie stopped.

“What?”

“Two days before he died.”

“Evidence of what?”

“The counterfeit operation.”

Luca stared.

“My sister knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t she tell me?”

Anthony shrugged.

“Ask her.”

Vincent’s voice hardened.

“What happened?”

“Daniel recorded a meeting.”

“With who?”

“Camille Russo.”

Luca went completely still.

His mother.

Vincent’s future mother-in-law.

Anthony continued.

“Rafael Moretti.”

“And Adriana?”

“She was there.”

Luca shook his head.

“No.”

Anthony looked at him.

“She wasn’t part of the deal.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she threatened to expose it.”

Vincent stared.

“What?”

Anthony nodded.

“Daniel showed me the recording.”

“What did Adriana say?”

“She told her mother to stop using Calderone routes.”

“Why didn’t she come to me?”

“Because Camille told her if she did, the Russo-Calderone war started again.”

Vincent laughed bitterly.

Another person deciding what he could handle.

Anthony continued.

“Adriana tried to get Daniel out.”

“She failed.”

“Yes.”

“Did she know Moretti would kill him?”

“No.”

Maggie’s eyes filled.

“How do you know?”

“Because when Daniel died, she came after Moretti.”

Luca stared.

“She did what?”

“Paid two men to find him.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Anthony looked at him sadly.

“Your family is very committed to secrecy.”

Maggie muttered:

“Apparently all of them are.”

Vincent ignored it.

“Then why plant your rosary?”

Anthony looked confused.

“I don’t know.”

Vincent stared.

“Did Adriana take it from you?”

Anthony nodded slowly.

“Four months ago.”

“How?”

“She found the apartment I was using in Newark.”

“And?”

“She came with two men.”

Luca’s face hardened.

“Who?”

“Russo security.”

“My men?”

“No.”

“Camille’s.”

Luca’s expression changed.

Anthony continued.

“Adriana searched the place.”

“For Isabella’s box?”

“Yes.”

“She took the rosary.”

“Yes.”

Vincent looked toward the chapel corridor.

“If she planted it under the piano, she wanted me to think you had been there.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Anthony answered quietly.

“Maybe because she wanted you to start looking.”

That stopped everyone.

Maggie frowned.

“What?”

Anthony looked at Vincent.

“What if she couldn’t tell you openly?”

Vincent stared.

“Then she could’ve left a note.”

“Would you have believed a note saying Anthony is alive and my mother is moving counterfeit medicine through your docks?”

Vincent thought.

Maybe not.

Anthony continued.

“But my rosary?”

“You’d recognize it.”

“Yes.”

“And ask questions.”

Ruby added:

“She also left the door open.”

Everyone turned.

Vincent stared.

“What?”

Ruby nodded.

“The music-room door.”

“You said it was open.”

“Yes.”

“Who opened it?”

Ruby pointed toward the chapel hallway.

“The pretty lady.”

Silence.

Maggie covered her face.

“She wanted Ruby to go inside.”

Ruby looked offended.

“I went because I wanted to.”

Maggie sighed.

Vincent felt the entire sequence change.

Adriana entered locked room.

Talked about box.

Planted Anthony’s rosary.

Left door open.

A curious child discovered it.

Then Adriana publicly denied being there.

Not clean.

Not innocent.

But possibly deliberate.

Vincent looked at Anthony.

“She wanted me to catch the lie.”

“Maybe.”

Luca shook his head.

“That makes no sense.”

Anthony looked at him.

“Your sister has spent years under Camille.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t talk about my mother.”

“Then stop pretending you know everything she does.”

Before Luca could answer, Frank’s radio crackled again.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“South carriage house.”

“Adriana?”

“No.”

“What?”

“Blood.”

Luca’s face changed.

Vincent moved immediately.

They reached the old chapel tunnel in minutes.

Adriana’s phone lay cracked on the stone floor.

One diamond earring beside it.

A small smear of blood along the wall.

The exit door to the carriage house stood open.

Outside, tire tracks.

Two vehicles.

Gone.

Luca picked up the earring.

“She wouldn’t leave this.”

Vincent looked at Anthony.

“You still think she planned everything?”

Anthony crouched beside the tracks.

“No.”

Frank found something tucked beneath the broken phone.

A folded paper.

Vincent opened it.

One line.

THE KEY FOR THE WOMAN.

Beneath it—

the three-point crown.

Maggie went pale.

“That’s me.”

Vincent nodded.

“Probably.”

Anthony looked toward the road.

“Moretti.”

Vincent stared.

“How do you know?”

“The crown was ours once.”

“Yours.”

“Yes.”

“Who else used it?”

“Rafael copied it after I disappeared.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“To blame you.”

“Yes.”

Maggie looked at the brass key around her neck.

“They want this.”

Anthony stared.

“No.”

“What?”

“They think they want that.”

Maggie frowned.

Anthony looked at Vincent.

“The brass key doesn’t open Isabella’s box.”

Vincent went still.

“What?”

“Daniel found two keys.”

Maggie’s face changed.

“The hospital bracelet.”

Anthony nodded.

“He hid the real vault key inside Ruby’s newborn bracelet.”

“Where does this one go?”

“Pier Nine.”

Vincent looked at Maggie.

She swallowed.

“What’s there?”

Anthony answered:

“What Daniel copied before he died.”

Maggie’s eyes filled.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Vincent looked at her.

“Speaker.”

Maggie answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then Adriana’s voice.

Weak.

“Maggie.”

Luca stepped forward.

“Adriana!”

A man’s voice cut in.

Rafael Moretti.

“Midnight.”

Vincent’s face went cold.

“Rafael.”

“Vincent.”

“Where is she?”

“Alive.”

“For now.”

Luca swore.

Moretti continued.

“Bring Daniel Flynn’s key to Grand Central.”

Anthony shook his head.

Wrong key.

Moretti did not know.

Good.

“Come alone.”

Vincent almost laughed.

“You know me better.”

“Yes.”

Moretti’s voice became amused.

“That’s why I already have one Calderone secret tied to a chair.”

Then another voice came through.

Older woman.

Furious.

“Rafael, you idiot.”

Camille Russo.

Luca stopped breathing.

His mother.

Adriana’s mother.

Moretti had both.

Then the line died.

Vincent looked around.

Anthony.

Luca.

Maggie.

Frank.

Every family in the room had lied to protect someone.

It had led them here.

Vincent reached for his phone.

Luca frowned.

“Who are you calling?”

“Police.”

Anthony almost laughed.

Maggie stared.

Vincent looked at all of them.

“What?”

Frank said:

“Nothing.”

Vincent dialed.

“No more private wars.”

May you like

Then he looked at Maggie.

“After that, we find out what Daniel died protecting.”
