Chapter 6 - THE RECIPE FOR BETRAYAL

“Elena?”
My voice was muffled by the three-foot-thick steel door, but the sheer disbelief in it echoed around the small vault.
Through the reinforced glass, the eighty-year-old woman stood perfectly still. The warm, grandmotherly smile she had worn all evening was completely gone, replaced by a cold, hollow expression.
She held the gun steady, aimed directly at the glass.
“What is she doing?” I panicked, rushing to the door and pounding on the glass. “Elena! Open the door!”
Luca didn’t hit the glass. He stood in the center of the vault, staring at the woman who had baked him bread, who had saved his life from a walnut allergy just hours ago.
“She’s not going to open it, Emma,” Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
He walked up to the glass and looked Elena in the eye.
“How long, Elena?” Luca asked. The vault’s intercom system allowed his voice to filter into the hallway.
Elena pressed a button on the wall panel outside to speak back.
“Thirty years, Luca,” her voice crackled through the speaker, devoid of emotion. “I have worked for the Bellini family for thirty years.”
My blood ran cold.
“You saved his life tonight!” I yelled at the speaker. “You brought the allergy card! You exposed Vanessa!”
“I exposed Vanessa because she was stupid,” Elena replied coldly. “Vanessa thought she could kill Luca and inherit the syndicate. But Dominic and his father knew that if Luca died before the marriage, the Bellini family would get nothing. Vanessa acted on her own. I stepped in to keep Luca alive, so Dominic could secure the assets.”
I looked at Luca. He was absorbing the betrayal of a woman who had practically raised him.
“You poisoned Thomas,” Luca realized aloud.
Elena’s eyes shifted to my father, who was slumped in his wheelchair, breathing heavily in the thinning air of the vault.
“Yes,” Elena admitted. “Two years ago. I slipped the synthetic clot into his coffee when he came to the mansion for a meeting. We needed the ledger. But the dose was too strong. It ruined his brain before we could interrogate him.”
I felt a wave of absolute nausea.
This frail old woman had destroyed my family’s life over a cup of coffee.
“Dominic called me from Emma’s house,” Elena continued. “He told me the girl had the biometric key. I knew you would come here. The Bellinis are on their way to collect the bonds. I’m just keeping you contained until they arrive.”
“They’ll kill her, Elena,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a dangerous growl. “And they’ll kill Thomas.”
“That is not my concern,” she said flatly.
“You loved my mother,” Luca pleaded, a desperate edge finally breaking his composure. “You were her best friend.”
Elena’s face tightened. A flash of genuine pain crossed her eyes, but she quickly suppressed it.
“Your mother was a fool,” Elena spat. “And your father was a monster.”
She turned the intercom off. She stepped back from the glass, lowering the gun, and stood guard in the hallway like a stone sentinel.
Inside the vault, the air was already growing stale.
My father let out a soft, wheezing cough.
“Luca, there has to be a manual override,” I said frantically, searching the smooth steel walls of the vault. “An emergency release!”
“There isn’t,” Luca said, pacing the small room. “It’s a black-site vault. It’s designed to be a tomb if the wrong person triggers the lock.”
He looked at the filing cabinet filled with a billion dollars in bearer bonds.
“They’re going to force you to transfer the funds at gunpoint when they get here,” Luca said. “And once it’s done, they’ll shoot us all and leave us in here.”
Tears spilled down my cheeks.
We had fought so hard. My father had sacrificed his entire life to protect this wealth, and now we were going to die inside the very safe he built.
I looked down at the small leather box sitting on the cabinet.
The letters.
“Emma,” Luca said gently. “Read the letter.”
I picked up the envelope with my trembling hands. I broke the wax seal.
The paper was yellowed with age. I recognized my father’s neat, architectural handwriting.
My dearest Emma,
If you are reading this, it means the worst has happened. It means Antonio Moretti is dead, and the Bellini family has finally made their move.
I never wanted this life for you. I wanted you to be a normal girl. But you are the only one I trust to finish what Antonio and I started.
This vault contains enough money to rebuild the city of Chicago. But it is dirty money. Blood money. Antonio and I spent a decade washing it, hiding it, so that one day, we could use it to destroy the syndicate from the inside out.
I kept reading, my breath catching in my throat.
Do not give the bonds to Luca.
I stopped.
I looked up at Luca.
He was watching me intently. “What does it say?”
I looked back down at the letter.
Luca is a good boy, but he is his father’s son. If he gets this money, he will use it to wage a war that will tear the city apart. He will become the very monster we tried to destroy.
There is only one way out of the vault, Emma. Look under the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet. There is a red lever. It does not open the door.
It activates an incinerator.
My eyes widened in absolute horror.
If you are trapped, Emma, burn it all. Burn the billion dollars. Without the money, the Bellini family cannot pay the cartel. The cartel will wipe them out for us. It is the only way to end the cycle.
I love you. I am so sorry.
Dad.
I looked at my father in his wheelchair. He was watching me with tears in his eyes, nodding slowly.
He wanted me to burn it.
“Emma,” Luca stepped forward, seeing the panic on my face. “What did he write?”
I took a step back, holding the letter to my chest.
If I pulled the lever, a billion dollars of Luca’s inheritance would turn to ash.
May you like
And if Luca found out what my father had instructed me to do, he might kill us himself.
