Chapter 9 - THE LIGHT IN THE SHADOWS

One Year Later.

The backyard of the Moretti estate was unrecognizable.

The high stone walls that once held barbed wire and security cameras were now covered in blooming jasmine vines. The tactical training grounds had been replaced by a sprawling garden and a wooden swing set.

I sat on a comfortable patio chair, a warm cup of tea in my hands, watching the late summer sun dip below the horizon.

"Higher, Grandpa! Push me higher!"

Mia’s joyous laughter rang across the lawn.

My father, wearing a linen shirt and looking ten years younger than he had the night at the shipyard, gave her swing a gentle push, chuckling as she soared through the air.

"Careful, farfalla," Antonio warned playfully. "If you fly away, who is going to help me eat all the ice cream?"

I smiled, taking a sip of my tea.

The transition hadn't been completely seamless. Dismantling a century-old mafia empire came with endless legal battles, threats from minor factions, and long nights of Vincent dealing with federal agents.

But Vincent had kept his promise.

He had shielded us from the fallout. He had built a legitimate logistics and shipping company from the ashes of his father's empire.

He was a civilian.

The sound of footsteps on the stone patio made me turn my head.

Vincent walked out through the French doors. He had just returned from the office, loosening his tie and unbuttoning his collar.

He looked tired, but the moment his eyes found me, the exhaustion melted away.

He walked over, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to my lips.

"How was your day, Mrs. Moretti?" Vincent murmured against my skin.

"Peaceful," I smiled, reaching up to run my fingers through his dark hair. "How was the board meeting?"

"Boring," Vincent sighed, pulling up a chair beside me and reaching for my hand. "I almost missed the days when I could just threaten people into agreeing with me."

I playfully slapped his arm. "Stop it."

He laughed, his thumb gently tracing the gold band on my ring finger.

We had married in a small, private ceremony in the estate's garden six months ago. No press. No mafia bosses. Just my father, Mia, and a few close friends.

It was perfect.

"Uncle Vince!"

Mia had abandoned the swing and was running across the grass at full speed.

Vincent barely had time to brace himself before she launched into his lap, wrapping her small arms around his neck.

"Hey, kiddo," Vincent smiled, hugging her tightly. "Did you give your grandpa a hard time today?"

"No," Mia said seriously, pulling back. "Grandpa taught me how to pick a lock."

Vincent shot a glare across the yard at my father.

Antonio just shrugged innocently, holding his hands up in mock surrender before walking back into the house.

"We are going to have to talk to him about his babysitting curriculum," Vincent sighed, though a smile tugged at his lips.

"I think it's a useful skill," I teased.

Mia scrambled off Vincent's lap and grabbed my hand.

"Aunt Clara, come look at the flowers I planted," she demanded, pulling me up from my chair.

"Okay, okay," I laughed, letting her drag me toward the edge of the patio.

But as I stood up, a sudden, familiar wave of dizziness washed over me. I stumbled slightly, grabbing the edge of the patio table to steady myself.

Vincent was by my side in a fraction of a second, his hands gripping my waist firmly.

"Clara?" he asked, his voice sharp with immediate concern. "Are you alright? You're pale."

"I'm fine," I breathed, closing my eyes until the spinning stopped. "I just stood up too fast."

Vincent frowned, his protective instincts on full display. "You were dizzy yesterday morning too. I'm calling a doctor."

He reached for his phone.

I placed my hand over his, stopping him.

I looked up into his dark, worried eyes. I couldn't stop the massive smile from breaking across my face.

"Vincent," I said softly. "I don't need a doctor."

He paused, staring at me, trying to read my expression.

"I went to the pharmacy this afternoon," I continued, my voice trembling with happy tears.

Vincent froze.

The ruthless, fearless man who had commanded a criminal empire, the man who had faced down guns without blinking, suddenly looked completely, utterly breathless.

"Clara..." Vincent whispered, his eyes dropping to my stomach, then back up to my face. "Are you...?"

I nodded, a happy sob escaping my throat. "Yeah. We're going to have a baby."

Vincent didn't say a word.

He wrapped his arms around me, burying his face in my neck, holding me so tightly I could feel the erratic, joyful hammering of his heart against my chest.

I felt a warm tear hit my skin, and I knew it wasn't mine.

"A baby," Vincent breathed, pulling back just enough to look at me, his eyes shining with absolute wonder. "You're giving me a family."

"You already gave me one," I whispered, reaching up to wipe the tear from his cheek.

Mia ran back over, looking confused.

"Why is Uncle Vince crying?" she asked, tilting her head. "Did he drop his ice cream?"

Vincent laughed—a loud, booming, beautiful sound.

He reached down and scooped Mia up into his arms, holding her on his hip while he wrapped his other arm tightly around me.

"No, piccola," Vincent smiled, pressing a kiss to Mia's forehead, then turning to kiss me deeply. "I just realized I have everything I've ever wanted."

I leaned my head against his shoulder as the sun finally set, painting the sky in vibrant shades of gold and pink.

I thought about the girl I used to be. The terrified maid, keeping her head down, hiding in the shadows of a monster's house.

She was gone.

I was Clara Moretti.

I had my father. I had my niece.

And I had a man who had walked through fire to bring me into the light.

May you like

The shadows of the past were finally gone.

And our future was just beginning.
