Chapter 9 - THE FAMILY

The water around Pier 4 was searched for three days, but Julian Rosselli’s body was never found. The locket was lost to the Atlantic forever.

Dante didn't care.

"Money is just paper," he told me later, sitting in the warm, sunlit conservatory of his Brookline estate. "Family is blood. And loyalty."

My mother was resting in a massive four-poster bed upstairs, surrounded by the best private doctors Dante’s remaining fortune could buy. She was weak, but she was smiling.

When I had finally cut her loose on the docks, she hadn't cried for herself. She had reached out her bruised hands and touched my face, whispering, "You kept him safe. My brave Lena."

Dante had cleared our names. He had severed his ties with the violent parts of his empire, selling off the rackets to rival families in exchange for absolute peace. He kept the legitimate construction and shipping businesses.

"It's enough to rebuild," he said.

I was sitting on the plush rug in the center of the room. Leo was crawling toward me, his little knees slapping against the floorboards.

He reached my legs, pulled himself up using my jeans, and babbled happily, patting his hand against my cheek.

I smelled like lavender. I always would.

Dante watched us from his armchair, sipping espresso. He looked ten years younger. The exhaustion was gone from his eyes, replaced by a quiet, profound gratitude.

"I owe your mother a debt I can never repay," Dante said softly. "She protected my grandson when I couldn't. And you... you brought him back to me."

He set his cup down and leaned forward.

"You aren't going back to the restaurant, Alina. I've set up a trust for you and Rosa. Enough so neither of you ever has to work a day in your lives if you don't want to. But I was hoping..."

He paused, looking at Leo, who had now buried his face in my neck, perfectly content.

"...I was hoping you'd stay here. In the house. Both of you. Leo needs his grandmother. And I think he needs you."

I looked around the beautiful, quiet room. I thought about the tiny, cramped apartment I had lived in, always looking over my shoulder, always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I looked at Dante, a man who had sacrificed his entire empire without a second thought to catch a falling child.

"He's family," I said quietly, wrapping my arms around the boy.

Dante smiled, a real, genuine smile that finally reached his eyes. "Yes, he is. And so are you."

Leo babbled again, reaching up to tug playfully at a new silver chain Dante had bought for me. There was no map on this one. No secrets. Just a beautiful, unbroken circle.

We were safe. We were together. And for the first time in my life, I knew exactly where I belonged.
