Chapter 8 - THE HEIR AND THE WRENCH

The heavy oak door didn't swing open; it crashed entirely out of its frame, falling flat onto the nursery floor with a deafening thud.
Vanessa shrieked, stumbling backward.
She was standing near the window, holding little Leo by the collar of his pajamas, her gun pressed against his temple.
Luca stepped over the fallen door, his weapon raised, perfectly steady.
“Let the boy go, Vanessa.”
“Back up!” she screamed, her hand shaking violently. “I’ll do it! I’ll kill him!”
Leo was crying, his small hands clutching his stuffed bear. He looked at his uncle with wide, terrified eyes.
I stood in the hallway, my heart in my throat. Mark stood beside me, his grip tightening on his heavy metal wrench.
“You aren't a killer, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice soothing, hypnotic. “You hire people to do your killing. You pay uncles with fake rings. You force mechanics to plant bombs. But you’ve never pulled a trigger yourself.”
“Shut up!”
“Look at your hand,” Luca said gently. “You’re shaking. You don't have the stomach for this.”
Vanessa looked down at her own hand. Just for a split second.
It was all Mark needed.
My brother didn't hesitate. He didn't wait for permission.
He threw his heavy HVAC wrench like a baseball pitcher.
The heavy steel tool flew across the room and struck Vanessa squarely in the wrist.
Crack.
Vanessa screamed in agony, dropping the gun. It clattered across the hardwood floor.
Luca lunged. He tackled Vanessa to the ground, pinning her arms behind her back with brutal efficiency.
Leo stood frozen for a second, then ran crying toward the door.
I fell to my knees, catching the little boy in my arms, holding him tight. “You’re safe, sweetheart. You’re safe.”
Mark walked into the room, picked up his wrench, and wiped it on his pants. He looked down at Vanessa, his face completely blank.
Nobody frames me for murder, Mark signed to her, even though she couldn't understand him.
Luca pulled Vanessa to her feet, zip-tying her wrists with a set of plastic cuffs from his pocket.
“Mrs. Carter!” Luca yelled down the hall.
The housekeeper appeared instantly.
“Call the police,” Luca said. “Tell them the woman who kidnapped my nephew has been subdued. Have them bring a squad car to the front door.”
Vanessa looked at Luca in shock. “The police? You’re giving me to the cops?”
“The Commission wants to peel your skin off,” Luca said coldly. “Prison is a mercy you don't deserve, but it’s the one you’re getting. You’re going to spend the rest of your life in a concrete box.”
He shoved her toward the guards waiting in the hallway.
When she was gone, the nursery was finally quiet.
Luca walked over to me and Leo. He knelt down, wrapping his arms around both of us. He buried his face in Leo’s shoulder, taking a deep, shuddering breath.
“Thank you,” Luca whispered to me. Then he looked up at Mark. “Thank you.”
Mark nodded, offering a small, exhausted smile.
The nightmare was over.
An hour later, the police had taken Vanessa away. The estate was secured.
I was in the kitchen, making hot chocolate for Leo. The little boy was sitting at the island, swinging his legs, the terror finally fading from his eyes.
Luca walked in. He had changed out of his muddy clothes into a clean black sweater. He looked like a normal man. Not a mafia boss. Just an uncle.
He sat on the stool next to Leo and took a sip of the hot chocolate.
“Too hot?” I asked.
“It’s perfect,” Luca smiled.
He looked at me for a long time. The silence in the kitchen was warm, comfortable.
“Anna,” Luca said quietly. “I meant what I said at the rail yard. You and your brother… you’re good people. You don't belong in this world.”
My heart sank a little. Was he firing me?
“I’ve set up a trust in your name,” Luca continued. “Enough to pay for your night school, buy a nice house in the suburbs, and set Mark up with his own HVAC business. You never have to scrub another floor again.”
I stared at him. It was a king’s ransom. It was freedom.
But looking at Luca, and little Leo, I didn't feel the urge to run.
“What about you?” I asked.
Luca looked down at his mug. “I’m stepping down.”
I gasped. “What?”
“I’m dissolving the Moretti cartel,” Luca said, his voice firm. “I’m turning our legitimate businesses into a legal holding company. The gambling, the extortion, the violence… it ends with me. I’m not letting Leo grow up in a world where he has to look over his shoulder.”
He looked up at me, his dark eyes filled with vulnerability.
“But building a legitimate life is going to be hard. I’m going to need people I can trust. People who know how to live in the light.”

He reached across the island and gently took my hand.
“Stay, Anna. Don't be my maid. Be my partner.”
