Chapter 4 - THE FLOWER FOR GRACE
The fifth flower contained no thread.
It contained a pin.
Not a lion.
A tiny brass key.
Grace recognized it first.
“That opens the linen cabinet.”
Matteo frowned.
“Which one?”
“Third floor.”
“What’s in it?”
“Sheets.”
“Towels.”
“Nothing important.”
Russo looked at Grace.
“Who has access?”
“Housekeeping.”
“And?”
“Event staff this week.”
The cabinet was searched.
Inside, behind stacked linens, sat a small paper bag.
No weapon.
No poison.
Three missing security badges.
One belonging to Russo’s night officer.
Two temporary event passes.
And Grace’s employee ID.
She stared.
“I didn’t put that there.”
Matteo believed her but said:
“We verify.”
Good.
Security logs showed Grace used her ID at 3:12 p.m. to enter west corridor.
She had been in kitchen then.
Multiple witnesses.
Badge copied or stolen temporarily.
Grace remembered:
“Tuesday my apron went missing for an hour.”
There.
Someone had cloned access.
The fifth flower key would direct discovery toward cabinet.
Containing her ID.
A setup.
If political plan collapsed, Grace could be blamed as internal security leak.
A maid.
Young.
No influence.
Perfect scapegoat.
Matteo felt sick.
Salvatore had prepared to burn her before she even intervened.
Why?
Because she had removed flowers twice.
Maybe he saw.
Maybe Caroline told him.
Grace looked at Matteo.
“I need to leave.”
He froze.
“What?”
“I’m not safe here.”
Correct.
Old Matteo might have said no one leaves.
Instead:
“Where do you want to go?”
She blinked.
“My aunt’s.”
“Queens.”
“Yes.”
“I can arrange secure transport.”
“No men inside.”
“Fine.”
“One car.”
“Fine.”
“Tommy?”
She looked toward hallway.
“That’s your decision.”
No.
Matteo corrected:
“His too.”
Good.
Tommy did not go.
He wanted his father.
That mattered.
Grace left with one security driver and her aunt on phone.
No romantic rescue.
The moment she was gone, Matteo turned to Russo.
“How did Salvatore know enough about housekeeping schedules to frame her?”
Russo had no answer.
Audit access.
Found Salvatore’s assistant had requested staff rosters under wedding planning.
Normal.
Danger hidden inside ordinary permission.
Then medical equipment trucks were recovered at Bellucci-affiliated yard.
Unopened.
Interesting.
Belluccis claimed misunderstanding.
Their dispatcher said Salvatore faxed authorization.
No Bellucci leadership signature.
Caroline’s father, Don Emilio Bellucci, arrived at Moretti House furious.
Seventy.
Old-world.
Controlled.
He entered expecting war.
Matteo met him in library.
No guns displayed.
No theatrics.
Emilio said:
“You insulted my daughter.”
“She grabbed my son’s face and helped plan a public power play.”
“She says no one was meant harm.”
“Nico was drugged.”
“That was not us.”
“I believe that.”
Emilio paused.
Unexpected.
Matteo continued:
“Because someone used both families.”
They compared information.
Dangerous in another era.
Necessary now.
Emilio knew joint-committee plan.
Yes.
He approved.
Political leverage.
No sedation.
No fake waiter.
No stolen trucks.
No fifth flower.
Salvatore had expanded scheme beyond agreement.
Why?
Power.
Maybe money.
Maybe he wanted alliance to fail after creating chaos he could mediate.
Then Emilio said:
“There was never supposed to be a white flower.”
Matteo froze.
“What?”
“The ceremony had three.”
Red-thread? Actually if Emilio knows symbols, maybe Bellucci custom. He says three black-ribbon flowers to escorts, no white. The white-thread flower was Salvatore's addition.
Meaning Matteo's “remaining leader” mark was Salvatore’s signal to someone else.
To identify Matteo in room after rearrangement? But everyone knows Matteo. Symbolic maybe for hired outsiders unfamiliar. Or indicates he is to be isolated.
Emilio continued:
“My daughter knew you would receive a flower.”
“Not thread meaning.”
“Correct.”
Caroline knew joint committee, flowers to advisers, Tommy out. But not deeper coded marking.
Good nuance.
Matteo asked:
“What does white thread mean to Bellucci?”
Emilio stared.
“Nothing.”
Russo had said old Bellucci custom.
Matteo turned.
Russo stiffened.
Oh! Could Russo be compromised? We need not make trusted security chief villain? User asks exposed man he trusted maybe could be Russo? But opening says flowers to three closest including Russo. Maybe his knowledge is false because Salvatore taught him. We can create that old marking actually Santoro dock code, not Bellucci. Russo misremembered from old conflicts. Better.
Emilio said:
“Red thread did once mark men removed from meetings.”
“White does not.”
Then who told Russo white meaning? Russo says his father, old security. Maybe Salvatore created false tradition. Not central.
Then Emilio placed photograph on table.
Salvatore meeting with Vincent Caruso two months before engagement announcement.
At a diner in Newark.
Emilio had surveillance because he distrusted him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Emilio shrugged.
“We were enemies becoming family.”
Fair.
Photo showed third man.
Matteo recognized instantly.
Frankie.
His oldest capo.
The man Tommy was supposed to give first red-thread flower.
Matteo’s chest tightened.
Maybe Frankie was not target.
Maybe participant.
He summoned Frankie.
Frankie looked at photo.
Did not deny.
“I met them.”
“Why?”
“Salvatore asked me.”
“About?”
“Security for wedding.”
“Vincent?”
“Said he was subcontractor.”
“You knew he worked for my father?”
“Yes.”
“Why not tell Russo?”
Frankie looked toward Russo.
“Because Salvatore said Russo was compromised.”
Everyone went still.
Salvatore had been telling each trusted man another was unsafe.
Classic compartmentalization.
Frankie thought he was quietly protecting Matteo from Russo.
Russo thought red threads were Bellucci threat.
Paul had been told Frankie might defect after marriage.
Everyone suspicious.
Salvatore central.
Same method Caroline used with Tommy:
You are responsible.
Only you can prevent disaster.
Do not tell others.
Matteo saw architecture.
Not just plot.
A culture.
His organization already rewarded secrecy.
Salvatore weaponized it.
Then Frankie admitted something worse.
He had approved Vincent’s temporary event credentials.
Because Salvatore said Russo couldn’t know.
There.
Frankie had unknowingly opened door to man who drugged Nico.
Consequences.
Frankie looked sick.
“I didn’t know.”
Matteo said:
“I believe you.”
Frankie almost relaxed.
Then:
“You still failed.”
Good.
“You bypassed security based on one man’s word.”
Frankie nodded.
“What happens?”
“We find out.”
No instant punishment.
Later, Vincent Caruso was found and arrested for assault/drugging? Maybe by police after surveillance. He admitted Salvatore paid him to create “medical incident” with Nico and move trucks during confusion. He thought no serious harm.
Again no death intended.
Why target Nico?
Nico handled route-dispatch authorizations and would notice trucks moved.
So sedating him removed operational obstacle.
Flowers/political ceremony was cover.
Now Salvatore’s real plan emerges: exploit wedding to transfer high-value cargo and documentation? Perhaps he was selling diverted route contracts to third-party cartel? But user wants mafia central. Let's say he planned to use temporary joint committee to shift three lucrative port concessions to his own shell company before anyone could reverse. Need paperwork, user dislikes legal twists. Better concrete: he arranged three medical-equipment trucks as dry run; on wedding night, six refrigerated trucks with high-value pharmaceutical cargo would be rerouted through a yard he controlled, generating millions, and blame Belluccis if discovered. But that's financial/operational.
More emotional: Salvatore wanted war? He profits from conflict. Marriage would reduce his influence as mediator. So he designed plan to humiliate Matteo, steal trucks, drug Nico, and later blame Belluccis, causing wedding collapse and renewed conflict. Yet why help joint committee? To ensure both sides distrust each other. Could work.
He told Belluccis he was helping secure leverage.
Told Santoros he was protecting them.
Meanwhile he planned theft to look Bellucci.
Goal: sabotage peace and remain indispensable.
Yes.
Matteo realizes.
Emilio too.
Caroline perhaps a pawn with culpability.
Then Grace calls Matteo from aunt’s.
Not because scared.
She remembered something.
“Mr. Santoro, the flower delivery.”
“What?”
“The fake Carmine receipt.”
“What about it?”
“Twenty-four carnations.”
“We found five.”
Matteo’s blood ran cold.
Nineteen missing.
Where meant?
Wedding.
Maybe marking more people across both sides.
But if wedding canceled, still somewhere.
Grace:
“I counted boxes before I left.”
“There were nineteen white flowers in cold storage downstairs.”
Matteo orders not touch.
They search.
Nineteen flowers.
Black ribbons.
Some red threads.
Some blue.
Some green.
A full map.
Emilio recognizes colors? Could denote Bellucci crews? Maybe each color matches teams/doors? They discover tiny numbered tags under ribbons corresponding to table numbers.
Salvatore had mapped where people would move.
At same time, each flower included small RFID tags? Too techy.
Let's keep ritual-coded list in hidden florist wrap: names. They find labels for key men from both families.
Not to kill.
To separate.
At wedding, flowers would route people into different “honor rooms,” allowing Salvatore's crew to steal six trucks and seize communication rooms while leadership fragmented.
Then frame Belluccis.
A manufactured war.
Matteo says:
“He wasn’t protecting alliance.”
Emilio:
“He needed us hating each other.”
Why? Salvatore's power came from being broker in feud, plus profit from diverted routes during conflict.
Strong.
Then Caroline enters? She overhears? She realizes her own father and Matteo both used.
Her guilt.
She says she can contact planner to identify distribution lists. She cooperates.
Matteo does not forgive.
But acknowledges.
Then cliffhanger: Salvatore is not gone. He sends text to Matteo with photo of Grace outside aunt's building. “You should have kept your maid inside.” This is threat. Need safety not graphic. Matteo calls Grace immediately. She answers. Then sees man? Could be photographer. Better Salvatore uses surveillance to scare, but no abduction.
Grace says someone left sixth flower on car windshield. Black ribbon. No thread.
