Chapter 8 - THE VELVET BOX

Three months later.

The morning sun poured through the massive bay windows of the Villa Moretti breakfast room, casting a warm golden glow over the white linen table.

I sat at the table, sipping espresso, watching Emma enthusiastically coloring a picture of a blue rabbit. She wasn’t confined to the staff quarters anymore. She ran through the vast halls of the mansion as if she owned them, adored by every terrifying, heavily-armed guard on the payroll.

I looked down at my own reflection in the silver coffee pot. I wasn't wearing a gray maid’s uniform. I wore a beautiful silk blouse, my hair styled, my dignity completely restored.

The transition hadn't been easy. The Milan syndicate had been chaotic following Don Ricci’s removal, but Alessandro had taken total control. He had systematically purged the old, violent guard, shifting the family’s vast wealth into legitimate shipping and real estate enterprises. He was dismantling the mafia from the inside, honoring his father’s—and my husband’s—true legacy.

Heavy, familiar footsteps echoed on the marble floor.

Alessandro walked into the breakfast room, looking devastatingly handsome in a tailored navy suit. He carried a stack of thick legal files, but the moment he saw Emma, his serious expression melted into a bright, genuine smile.

"Good morning, my beautiful girls," Alessandro said, leaning down to kiss the top of Emma’s head before walking over to me and pressing a deep, lingering kiss to my lips.

"Good morning," I smiled against his mouth. "You're up early."

"I had a meeting with the final syndicate captains," Alessandro said, pulling out a chair and sitting beside me. He tossed the legal files onto the table. "They signed the transition papers. The illegal gambling rings are officially dissolved. We are fully legitimate, Clara."

I stared at him, overwhelmed by the magnitude of what he had accomplished in just ninety days. "You did it."

"We did it," he corrected gently, reaching over to interlock his fingers with mine. "I couldn't have done it without the strength you gave me."

Emma looked up from her coloring book. "Papa, look!" she announced proudly, holding up a messy crayon drawing of a blue rabbit standing next to a very tall stick figure in a black suit.

Alessandro’s eyes softened. He took the drawing as if it were a priceless masterpiece. "It is beautiful, Emma. I am going to frame it and put it on my desk."

Emma beamed, returning to her crayons with renewed vigor.

Alessandro turned back to me, his expression turning slightly nervous. The fearless Don of Milan was actually fidgeting.

He reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a small, dark blue velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat.

"Clara," Alessandro began, his voice dropping to that low, intimate register that always made my heart race. "When you walked into my life, you were broken, and I was empty. You brought light into a house that had only known shadows for a decade."

He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a breathtakingly beautiful, vintage diamond ring.

"This ring belonged to my mother," Alessandro said softly. "I swore I would never give it to a woman who only wanted my power. I wanted to give it to a woman who wanted my heart."

Tears instantly blurred my vision. I covered my mouth with my free hand.

"You gave me a family," Alessandro whispered, looking deep into my eyes. "You gave me a daughter. You gave me a reason to be a better man. Clara Bennett, will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife?"

"Yes," I cried, unable to hold back the happy tears. "Yes, Alessandro, of course I will."

He let out a shaky breath of relief, a brilliant smile breaking across his face. He slid the beautiful diamond onto my finger, a perfect fit.

He stood up, pulling me into his arms, and kissed me with a fierce, possessive love that promised a lifetime of safety and devotion.

"Eww, kissing," Emma giggled from the table, covering her eyes with her hands.

May you like

Alessandro broke the kiss, laughing warmly. He scooped me up with one arm and reached down to scoop Emma up with the other, holding us both tightly against his chest.

"Get used to it, Principessa," Alessandro teased, kissing Emma’s cheek, making her squeal with delight. "There is going to be a lot of love in this house from now on."
