Chapter 2 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE LOCKET

The silence in the entrance hall was suffocating.
Elena’s voice had just faded from the phone’s speaker, but her words were still echoing off the marble walls.
Daniel knew something about that pregnancy... Something Richard has been trying to hide from her.
I stood completely still, my hands pressed tightly against my swollen stomach.
My husband.
My sweet, quiet Daniel, who had kissed my forehead every morning before work, had been carrying a secret that got him killed.
And it involved the baby growing inside me.
Vincent Moretti slowly lowered the phone.
His dark eyes moved from the screen to my face.
For the first time since I’d met him, the powerful, untouchable mafia boss looked completely unmoored.
"Clara," he whispered. "What did Daniel leave you?"
My mind raced.
"He... he didn't leave anything," I stammered, tears spilling down my cheeks. "Just the wooden box. The one someone just stole from my apartment."
Vanessa suddenly lunged forward.
"This is ridiculous!" she screamed, her face pale with panic. "That phone is a fake! Someone is playing a cruel joke on you, Vincent. We need to leave. Right now."
She reached for her purse on the bench.
But Vincent didn't even look at her.
"Daniel," Vincent said, his voice deadly quiet.
The head of security stepped directly into Vanessa’s path.
"Excuse me, ma'am," the guard said, crossing his arms.
"Get out of my way!" Vanessa shrieked, shoving at his chest. "I am going to be the lady of this house!"
Vincent finally turned his head.
"You aren't even a guest in this house anymore, Vanessa."
Her face crumbled.
"Vincent, please. My father—"
"Your father is going to spend the rest of his life in a concrete box," Vincent interrupted, his voice like ice. "And if I find out you knew he killed this woman's husband, you’ll be in the cell next to him."
Before Vanessa could answer, the heavy front doors swung open.
Two paramedics rushed in, carrying a medical bag and a collapsible stretcher.
"We got a call for a pregnant female experiencing abdominal pain?" the lead medic asked.
Vincent pointed to me.
"Her. Be gentle."
The paramedics hurried over. I was trembling so hard my teeth were chattering.
"Alright, sweetheart, let's get you sitting down," the medic said, guiding me onto the stretcher. "I need to check your vitals. Unbutton the top of your blouse for the heart monitor, please."
My fingers were shaking too badly to manage the small buttons.
The female medic gently batted my hands away. "I got it, honey. Just breathe."
She unfastened the top two buttons.
As she did, the heavy silver locket I wore every day slipped out from beneath the fabric, resting against my collarbone.
Daniel had given it to me the day we found out I was pregnant.
He’d clasped it around my neck, kissed my cheek, and made me promise never to take it off until the baby was born.
I’d always thought it was empty.
But as the locket caught the light of the crystal chandelier, Vincent stepped closer.
He frowned, staring at my chest.
"Clara. Where did you get that?"
I looked down.
"My husband," I whispered. "He gave it to me."
Vincent crouched beside the stretcher.
"May I?" he asked softly.
I nodded.
Vincent reached out and took the heavy silver oval between his fingers.
"I've seen hundreds of these," Vincent said, his eyes narrowing. "When I was dealing in stolen antiques. This isn't standard jewelry, Clara. It’s too thick."
He flipped it over.
There was a tiny, almost invisible pinhole near the hinge.
Vincent reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a gold tie clip, and pressed the sharp end into the pinhole.
Click.
The back of the locket popped off.
It wasn't a picture frame.
Nested perfectly inside the hollowed-out silver backing was a tiny black micro-SD card.
My breath caught in my throat.
Vanessa saw it.
She let out a terrified gasp and tried to run for the door, but the security guards grabbed her arms, pinning her in place.
Vincent carefully extracted the tiny memory card.
He looked at Daniel, the head of security.
"Bring me a laptop. Now."
Within seconds, a sleek silver laptop was placed on the entrance hall table.
Vincent inserted the card.
A single audio file popped up on the screen.
Titled: For Clara.
I grabbed the edge of the stretcher, my heart hammering against my ribs.
Vincent pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then, a voice I thought I would never hear again broke through the speakers.
"If you're listening to this, Clara... it means Richard Sterling finally caught me."
I let out a sob. It was Daniel.
"I'm so sorry, my love," his recorded voice trembled. "I hid the little girl. Grace. She’s safe. But Richard knows I didn't kill her. He's coming for me tonight."
Vincent closed his eyes, the grief washing over his face.
"But Richard doesn't know what I did with the offshore accounts," Daniel continued, his voice growing stronger. "He was using Lakeview Medical to launder his cartel money. I stole the routing numbers."
Vanessa screamed, struggling against the guards. "Shut it off!"
Vincent ignored her.
"Clara," my husband’s voice said gently. "I tied those stolen accounts to the legal identity of our unborn child. An irrevocable trust. Richard can't touch his eighty million dollars until our baby is born."
The room went dead silent.
"He won't hurt you while you're pregnant," Daniel explained. "But the moment you deliver... he’s going to take the baby. And he’s going to kill you."
I stopped breathing.

Then, Daniel said the words that made my blood run cold.
"Don't trust the doctors at Lakeview, Clara. Richard owns the hospital. And I just found out... they aren't going to let you reach full term."
