Chapter 8 - THE DAWN OF A NEW FAMILY

The drive back to St. Jude’s Hospital was a blur of flashing lights, screaming sirens, and unbearable pain.

I lay in the back of Vincent’s armored SUV, my head resting in Elena’s lap. She stroked my hair, her soothing voice the only thing keeping me anchored as the contractions tore through me.

"Breathe, Clara," Elena murmured. "You are so strong. Daniel would be so incredibly proud of you."

I squeezed my eyes shut, crying out as another wave hit. "I want him here. I want my husband."

"I know, sweetheart," Elena cried with me. "I know."

We arrived at the hospital, and I was immediately rushed to the maternity ward.

Dr. Aris was waiting.

The delivery room was chaotic, bright, and terrifying. But I wasn't alone.

Elena stayed by my right side, holding my hand. Vincent stood near the door, keeping guard like a sentinel, ensuring absolutely no one entered who wasn't supposed to be there.

Hours passed. The pain was blinding.

But every time I felt like giving up, I touched the silver locket around my neck.

I tied those stolen accounts to the legal identity of our unborn child.

This baby wasn't just my child. She was Richard Sterling’s downfall. She was the final piece of Daniel’s legacy.

"One more big push, Clara!" Dr. Aris encouraged. "I see the head!"

I squeezed Elena’s hand so hard I thought I might break her fingers. I took a massive breath, closed my eyes, and pushed with everything I had left.

A sharp cry pierced the sterile air of the room.

I collapsed back onto the pillows, gasping for air.

"It's a girl, Clara," Dr. Aris smiled, holding up a beautiful, red-faced, screaming infant. "A perfectly healthy baby girl."

Tears streamed down my face as the nurse quickly cleaned her and placed her on my chest.

She was tiny, perfect, and warm. She had Daniel’s dark hair.

"Hello," I whispered, pressing my lips to her soft forehead. "Hello, my sweet girl."

Elena leaned down, her own face wet with tears. "She’s beautiful, Clara. What are you going to name her?"

I looked down at the tiny miracle resting on my chest.

"Danielle," I said softly. "Danielle Grace Bennett."

From the doorway, Vincent smiled.

The next morning, the sun broke through the heavy Chicago clouds, flooding my private hospital room with golden light.

I was sitting up in bed, cradling Danielle, when a soft knock came at the door.

Vincent walked in, carrying a massive bouquet of pink roses. Behind him was Elena, holding four-year-old Grace by the hand.

Grace was wearing a clean pink sweater and holding her stuffed rabbit. She looked shy, but her eyes were bright.

"Can we come in?" Vincent asked softly.

"Of course," I smiled.

Vincent set the flowers on the table and walked over to the bed. He looked down at baby Danielle, his expression infinitely tender.

"She's perfect, Clara."

"She is," I agreed.

Grace peaked over the edge of the mattress.

"Is that the baby?" she whispered.

"Yes," I said. "This is Danielle. She’s named after her daddy. The man who kept you safe."

Grace reached out a tiny finger and gently touched Danielle’s tiny hand. The baby reflexively wrapped her fingers around Grace’s.

Grace gasped, her eyes going wide. "She’s holding my hand!"

Elena smiled, wrapping her arm around Vincent’s waist.

"Vincent," I asked, looking up. "What happened to Richard and Vanessa?"

Vincent’s expression hardened for a fraction of a second before returning to peace.

"They were denied bail this morning," Vincent said. "With the recording Daniel left you, the forged divorce papers, and the kidnapping charges, they will both spend the rest of their natural lives in federal prison."

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. "And Daniel’s offshore accounts?"

"The money is sitting in a trust fund," Vincent said. "In Danielle’s name. It cannot be touched by anyone except her when she turns eighteen. Richard’s empire is completely dismantled."

Vincent pulled up a chair and sat next to my bed.

"Clara," he said seriously. "I want to talk about your future."

I looked down. "I know I can't be a maid anymore. With the baby... I'll find an apartment. Maybe take some online classes."

"You misunderstand me," Vincent interrupted gently.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy set of keys. He placed them on the tray table next to my bed.

"You are never working another day in your life unless you want to," Vincent said. "Those are the keys to the renovated guest house on the estate. The deed is already in your name."

I stared at the keys in shock. "Vincent, I can't accept that."

"You don't have a choice," Elena laughed softly. "We aren't letting you go, Clara. You’re family now. Danielle is going to grow up with Grace. They’re going to run through the gardens together. We are going to protect you, just like Daniel protected us."

Tears filled my eyes.

I looked at the keys, then at Vincent, then at Elena.

May you like

For the first time since Daniel died, I didn't feel like I was drowning. I felt safe.

"Thank you," I cried, pulling Danielle closer to my chest. "Thank you so much."
