Chapter 10 - THE POCKET WATCH IN THE GARDEN

I stood in the study, openly sobbing, clutching the letter to my chest.

Elena wrapped her arms around me, holding me tight as I cried for the husband who had loved me enough to leave me a trail, and brave enough to leave me a future.

"We need to go to the garden," I sniffled, pulling back and wiping my eyes.

Vincent nodded. "I'll get a shovel."

Ten minutes later, we were standing on the sprawling green lawns of the Moretti estate.

The summer breeze was warm, carrying the scent of blooming hydrangeas.

We walked to the far edge of the property, where a massive, ancient oak tree stood, its branches casting a wide, cooling shadow.

Vincent approached the base of the trunk.

He drove the shovel into the soft earth between two large, protruding roots.

He dug carefully for only a few minutes before the metal blade struck something hard.

Clink.

Vincent dropped the shovel and fell to his knees, brushing the dirt away with his hands.

He pulled out a small, rusted metal tin.

He stood up, wiped the dirt on his jeans, and handed the tin to me.

My hands were shaking as I popped the lid off.

Inside, wrapped in a piece of oilcloth, was a heavy, antique gold pocket watch.

It was beautifully crafted, the gold gleaming brightly in the sunlight despite having been buried.

"I recognize that," Vincent said softly. "That belonged to Daniel’s grandfather. It’s the only family heirloom he had."

I turned the watch over.

Engraved on the back of the gold casing were the words:

For my daughter. To remind you that time is our greatest gift. Love, Dad.

Fresh tears spilled down my cheeks.

He had buried it here for Danielle. He knew he might not survive, so he planted a piece of his legacy in the ground where he knew Vincent would eventually protect us.

"It's beautiful," Elena whispered, touching my shoulder.

"I’m going to give it to her on her eighteenth birthday," I smiled through my tears, clutching the watch to my heart.

"Look!" Grace suddenly yelled, pointing toward the sky.

We all looked up.

A single, bright yellow butterfly was fluttering down from the branches of the oak tree. It danced in the air, looping around us, before landing gently on my shoulder for a brief second.

Then, it fluttered away, disappearing into the sunlight.

Grace smiled widely. "Is that an angel?"

I looked at the sky, feeling a profound sense of peace wash over me for the first time in months.

"Yes, Gracie," I whispered. "I think it is."

Vincent cleared his throat, suddenly looking unusually nervous.

He reached into his pocket and turned toward Elena.

Elena blinked, confused by the sudden shift in his demeanor. "Vincent? What is it?"

Vincent took a deep breath, and right there, in the middle of the garden, he dropped down onto one knee.

Elena gasped, covering her mouth with both hands.

Vincent opened his hand, revealing the simple platinum wedding band that had been hidden in the suitcase. The ring engraved with Vincent & Elena. Forever.

"Four years ago," Vincent said, his voice trembling with emotion, "I let someone convince me that you had stopped loving me. I will spend the rest of my life making up for that mistake."

Elena was crying freely now, shaking her head. "You don't have to make up for anything."

"I want to do it right this time," Vincent smiled, holding the ring up. "No secrets. No shadows. Just you, me, and our family. Elena... will you marry me again?"

"Yes," Elena sobbed, dropping to her knees and throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, a thousand times yes."

May you like

Grace cheered, clapping her hands, and I laughed, wiping the happy tears from my face.

The heavy suitcase that had almost broken me on the marble staircase had finally released all its ghosts.
