Chapter 2 - THE BRACELET ON THE FLOOR

The dining room of the Moretti estate felt like a tomb.
Twenty-eight wealthy guests were completely frozen in their seats.
Nobody reached for their champagne. Nobody touched their dessert.
Because a twelve-year-old girl had just shattered a carefully constructed lie.
"Daddy... if Mommy wanted to come tonight, why did Vanessa tell her I was ashamed to be seen with her?"
Luca Moretti didn't move.
He didn't blink.
He remained kneeling on the floor beside his daughter, his large hands still gently holding her arms.
But the air around him had changed. It felt heavy. Dangerous.
"Lily," Luca said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly quiet register. "Look at me."
Lily sniffled, wiping her eyes. "Yes, Daddy?"
"I want you to tell me exactly what Vanessa said to you about your mother's appearance."
Vanessa immediately stepped forward. "Luca, please! She's a child. She's confused. I only meant that Caroline's recovery has been hard on her—"
Luca didn't even look at his fiancée.
He simply raised one hand. A sharp, commanding gesture that demanded absolute silence.
Vanessa's mouth snapped shut.
"Lily," Luca repeated softly. "Tell me."
Lily swallowed hard, her little fingers twisting the blue ribbon from her severed braid.
"Vanessa said Mommy lost all her hair and looked sick. She said Mommy didn't want to leave her house because she was ugly now. And she told me that if I asked Mommy to come here, Mommy would cry because she knew I was embarrassed by her."
My chest physically ached.
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face was chalk-white. She was trembling.
"And," Lily continued, her voice breaking, "Vanessa said if I cut my hair tonight and told everyone she was my new mom, it would fix everything. She promised Mommy would be so happy that she'd finally come visit me."
Luca slowly stood up.
He turned to face the woman he had asked to marry him just two months ago.
"You weaponized my daughter's love for her mother," Luca said.
It wasn't a question. It was a verdict.
"Luca, I love Lily!" Vanessa cried, tears suddenly spilling down her cheeks. "I was trying to help! Caroline is fragile. She told me herself that she felt inadequate!"
"Did she?" Luca asked coldly. "Or did you tell her that?"
"I am trying to build a family with you!" Vanessa shouted, her voice shrill, echoing off the crystal chandeliers. "Caroline is the past! I am your future! She gave me her blessing!"
"If she gave you her blessing," Luca said, stepping closer to her, "then call her. Right now. On speakerphone. Let's ask her."
Vanessa froze. "It's late. She's resting."
"Call her."
"Luca, you're humiliating me in front of our guests!"
"Call her, Vanessa. Or I will."
Vanessa reached into her expensive silver clutch purse with shaking hands.
But she was trembling so violently that the purse slipped.
It hit the hardwood floor with a sharp crack.
Lipstick, a compact mirror, and a cell phone spilled out.
But something else fell out, too.
Something heavy and gold.
It rolled across the floor and stopped right near the toe of my black uniform shoe.
I looked down.
It was a delicate gold bracelet. It had three small charms attached to it: a tiny book, a little trowel, and a sun.
Lily gasped.
She pulled away from her father and ran to my side, dropping to her knees to pick it up.
"That's Mommy's," Lily whispered, her eyes wide.
The entire room seemed to hold its breath.
Luca turned around. He looked at the bracelet in his daughter's hand.
"What?" Luca asked.
"It's Mommy's charm bracelet," Lily said, holding it up. "Daddy gave it to her when I was born. The book is because she's a teacher. The trowel is for her garden. And the sun is me."
Lily looked at Vanessa. "Mommy never takes this off. Never. She said it's her lucky charm."
Vanessa backed away, her hands flying to her mouth. "She... she gave it to me! As a peace offering!"
Luca's expression shifted from cold anger to absolute fury.
Answer One: Vanessa hadn't just spoken to Caroline on the phone. She had been in Caroline's house.
Open Two: Why did Vanessa have Caroline's most prized possession? And what had she actually done to Caroline to get it?
"Caroline would rather cut off her own hand than give you that bracelet," Luca said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper.
He looked at me.
"Emma."
I straightened my spine. "Yes, Mr. Moretti?"
"Take Lily upstairs. Put her in my bedroom. Lock the door."
"Daddy, no!" Lily cried, clutching the bracelet. "Where is Mommy?"
"I am going to find out right now," Luca said. He looked back at Vanessa. "The engagement is over. You have five minutes to tell me what you did to my ex-wife before I let my men ask you instead."
Vanessa let out a choked sob. "Luca, please! I just wanted her out of the picture!"
"Take her, Emma," Luca ordered.
I took Lily's hand and hurried her out of the dining room.
But as we reached the grand staircase, I heard a sound that made my blood run cold.
It was a heavy, dull thud, followed by Vanessa screaming.
I didn't look back. I pulled Lily up the stairs, my heart pounding against my ribs.
We reached Luca's master suite. I brought Lily inside and locked the heavy oak door, leaning against it.
Lily was shaking violently.
"Miss Emma," she whispered, looking down at the gold bracelet in her hand. "Look."
I stepped closer.
Lily turned the bracelet over.

On the back of the little gold sun charm, there was a dark, reddish-brown smear.
It was dried blood.
