Chapter 5 - THE VOICE ON THE RECORDER

I stared at the silver recorder on the laundry room floor.

My mind violently rejected what I had just heard.

Luca's voice.

He had hired Vanessa. He had orchestrated the entire cruel charade. The haircut. The isolation. The clinic. All to break his daughter's bond with her mother so he could maintain absolute control.

But why?

He had just rescued Caroline. He had held Lily while she cried. He had looked like a desperate, loving father.

Answer One: The loving father routine was a performance. Luca was a mafia boss who demanded absolute ownership of his family, and Caroline's survival had threatened his control over Lily.

Open Two: If Luca was the mastermind, why did he let Vanessa take the fall tonight? And what was he planning to do with Caroline now that she was back in his house?

I bent down with trembling hands and scooped up the recorder. I shoved it deep into my apron pocket.

I had to get Lily and Caroline out of this house.

But how? The estate was surrounded by armed men. I was just a maid.

I hurried down the hallway toward the guest suite where Caroline and Lily were sleeping.

I pressed my ear against the heavy oak door. Silence.

I turned the brass knob as slowly as I could. It clicked, and I pushed the door open an inch.

The room was bathed in moonlight. Lily was fast asleep, curled against her mother's side.

But Caroline was awake.

She was staring at the ceiling, her eyes wide and filled with a quiet, terrified clarity. The sedatives were wearing off.

I slipped inside and closed the door without a sound.

"Mrs. Moretti," I whispered, moving to the edge of the bed.

Caroline flinched, pulling Lily closer. "Who are you?"

"My name is Emma. I'm a maid here. I helped bring you back tonight."

Caroline studied my face. "You were in the car. You held my daughter."

"Yes." I crouched beside the bed so we were eye-to-eye. "Mrs. Moretti, we don't have much time. You need to tell me the truth. Why did Vanessa put you in that clinic?"

Caroline closed her eyes, a tear slipping down her pale cheek. "Because I found out about the offshore accounts. Luca isn't just running a syndicate in Chicago. He's washing money for a cartel in Mexico. I found the ledgers hidden in Lily's old nursery at my house. He must have hidden them there thinking I'd never look."

My stomach tightened.

"I told him I was going to the FBI," Caroline whispered. "I told him I wouldn't let Lily be raised with blood money. The next day, Vanessa showed up with two men. They injected me with something. When I woke up, I was locked in that room."

It all made terrible sense.

Luca couldn't kill his ex-wife without drawing a massive police investigation that would expose his operations. So he used Vanessa to slowly destroy Caroline's reputation, make her look unstable, and lock her away in a private clinic where she couldn't testify.

Tonight's rescue wasn't an act of love.

It was damage control. Vanessa had gone rogue by trying to hurt Lily with the haircut, creating a public spectacle that Luca couldn't afford.

"He's going to kill me, Emma," Caroline breathed, her voice shaking. "Now that I'm back here, behind his walls. He's going to stage an overdose. I know it."

"He won't," I said fiercely, reaching into my pocket.

I pulled out the silver recorder.

"I found this in his coat," I said. "It's a recording of him admitting he hired Vanessa to lock you up. It's the proof you need."

Caroline stared at the device, hope and terror warring in her eyes.

"We have to leave," she whispered. "Right now."

"We can't walk out the front door," I said. "There are guards everywhere. But there's a service tunnel beneath the wine cellar. It leads to the old carriage house outside the perimeter gate. I use it to bring up the vintage casks."

Caroline nodded weakly. She gently untangled herself from Lily.

"Lily, baby," Caroline whispered, shaking the little girl's shoulder. "Wake up."

Lily groaned, rubbing her eyes. "Mommy?"

"We're playing a game, sweetheart," Caroline said, forcing a brave smile. "We have to be very quiet and follow Emma. Okay?"

Lily looked confused, but she nodded. She trusted her mother implicitly.

Caroline stood up. Her legs wobbled. She was still incredibly weak. I wrapped my arm around her waist, supporting her weight.

We slipped out of the bedroom and into the dark hallway.

The house was completely silent.

We moved toward the back staircase, the one the staff used. Every creak of the floorboards sounded like a gunshot in the quiet house.

We reached the kitchen. The door to the wine cellar was right next to the pantry.

I opened it. The cold, damp air rushed up from the stone steps.

"Hold onto the railing," I whispered to Lily.

We descended into the darkness. I didn't dare turn on the lights. I knew the layout by heart.

We navigated past rows of dusty wine racks until we reached the back wall. I pushed aside a heavy wooden shelf, revealing the low iron door to the service tunnel.

I turned the rusted handle. It squeaked, loudly.

We all froze.

From upstairs, we heard the distinct sound of a door opening.

Heavy footsteps crossed the kitchen floor right above us.

"Emma?" a deep voice called out.

It was Marco. The head of security.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"Emma, I know you're down there," Marco called down the stairs. "The boss wants to see you in his study."

Caroline grabbed my arm, her eyes wide with panic.

"Go," I mouthed to her, pushing open the iron door. "Take the tunnel. Go to the carriage house. Hide."

"What about you?" Lily whispered, tears welling in her eyes.

"I'll buy you time," I said. I handed Caroline the silver recorder. "Keep this safe."

Caroline squeezed my hand, then pulled Lily into the dark tunnel, shutting the iron door behind them.

I took a deep breath, smoothed my apron, and walked to the bottom of the cellar stairs.

"I'm here, Marco," I called up, trying to keep my voice steady. "Just checking the inventory for tomorrow."

I walked up the stairs. Marco was standing at the top, his arms crossed.

He didn't look like the friendly guard who had helped me save my mother an hour ago. He looked like a soldier.

"The boss is waiting," he said.

I followed him through the house, my legs feeling like lead.

We reached Luca's study. The heavy oak doors were open.

Luca was sitting behind his massive mahogany desk. He had poured himself a glass of amber whiskey.

He looked up as I entered.

"Emma," he said smoothly. "Sit down."

I sat in the leather chair opposite his desk. "Is everything all right, Mr. Moretti?"

He took a sip of his whiskey.

"I went to check on my ex-wife and my daughter," Luca said. "Their bed is empty."

I forced a look of confusion. "Empty? I tucked them in twenty minutes ago."

Luca smiled. It was a terrifying, cold smile.

He reached into his desk drawer and pulled something out, tossing it onto the polished wood between us.

It was the brown braid tied with blue ribbons.

"You see, Emma," Luca said softly. "I know you found the recorder in my coat."

I stopped breathing.

"And I know you just sent my family down the service tunnel," he continued, leaning forward. "But what you don't know... is that you just handed them directly to the man who actually hired Vanessa."

He pressed a button under his desk.

The doors to the study opened.

I turned around.

May you like

Standing in the doorway, holding a terrified Caroline and Lily at gunpoint, was Luca's older brother.

Vincent Moretti.
