Chapter 10 - THE PACKAGE IN THE MAIL

A month later, the crisp chill of Chicago winter had settled over the Moretti estate.
Life had fundamentally changed, and yet, it felt more peaceful than ever.
Caroline had moved into the guest wing of the estate permanently. She and Luca weren't romantically involved, but they had forged a deep, respectful partnership to co-parent Lily. The dark shadow of the mafia operations had been buried deep underground; Luca had drastically reorganized his business, prioritizing legitimate logistics and real estate companies to keep the violence far away from his home.
Lily's hair had been beautifully styled into a chic bob by a professional stylist, and the donated braid had been sent to a charity that made wigs for children. She was smiling again.
And I was the Estate Manager.
My mother was settled into our beautiful new house in the suburbs, cared for by a private nurse while I worked during the day. I wore tailored suits instead of a maid's uniform. The staff respected me. Luca trusted me implicitly.
It was a Tuesday morning. I was sitting in my new office on the ground floor, reviewing the weekly catering budget, when Marco knocked on the open door.
Marco had been cleared of any wrongdoing; he had proven his loyalty to Luca during the coup and remained the head of security.
"Morning, Emma," Marco said, holding a small, brown cardboard box.
"Good morning, Marco," I smiled. "What's that?"
"Mail just arrived," he said, setting the box on my desk. "It's addressed to Lily. But there's no return address, and the postage marks look international."
I frowned. As Estate Manager, part of my new protocol was screening all packages directed at the family.
"Did you scan it?" I asked, pulling a silver letter opener from my drawer.
"X-rayed it at the gate," Marco confirmed. "No explosives, no electronics. Just a box."
"All right. I'll open it."
Marco nodded and left the office.
I carefully sliced the tape and opened the flaps of the box.
Inside was a layer of black tissue paper.
I pulled it back.
Resting in the center of the box was a stunning, antique diamond necklace.
It was breathtakingly beautiful, but it wasn't what made my stomach drop.
Beneath the necklace was a handwritten note on thick, expensive stationery.
I picked it up. The handwriting was sharp and jagged.
To my beautiful daughter, Lily.
I am so sorry I missed the last twelve years. Your mother kept you hidden from me, but I have finally found you.
I am coming to bring you home.
Love, your real father.
The air left my lungs.
Answer One: The letter claimed Luca Moretti wasn't Lily's biological father.
Open Two: Who sent this? And was it a cruel prank, or a devastating truth Caroline had kept buried for a decade?
I grabbed the box and the letter and practically ran down the hallway to Luca's study.
I knocked once and opened the door.
Luca was reviewing some legal documents. Caroline was sitting on the sofa, reading a book.
"Emma?" Luca asked, looking up at my pale face. "What's wrong?"
I walked over and placed the note and the necklace on his desk.
"This just arrived in the mail," I said quietly. "Addressed to Lily."
Luca picked up the note. As he read the words, his expression didn't change to anger.
It changed to absolute, icy dread.
He looked at Caroline.
"He found us," Luca whispered.
Caroline dropped her book. She stood up, her face draining of all color. She walked to the desk and looked at the handwriting.
She let out a choked gasp, covering her mouth with both hands.
"No," she sobbed, stepping backward. "No, he's dead. You told me he was dead!"
"I thought he was," Luca said, his voice hard. He picked up the diamond necklace. "But apparently, Julian is very much alive."
I stood there, completely lost. "Who is Julian?"
Luca looked at me. The vulnerability in his eyes was heartbreaking.
"Julian Vance," Luca said softly. "The man Caroline was engaged to before she met me. And the man who truly is Lily's biological father."
The room spun.
"I... I don't understand," I stammered. "You raised her. She's your daughter."
"She is my daughter in every way that matters," Luca said fiercely. "But biologically? No. When Caroline came to me thirteen years ago, she was pregnant, terrified, and running for her life."
Caroline sat back down on the sofa, burying her face in her hands.
"Julian isn't just a man, Emma," Caroline wept. "He's a ghost. An international arms dealer. He beat me. He controlled every breath I took. When I found out I was pregnant, I knew I had to escape, or my baby would be raised in hell."
"I took her in," Luca explained quietly. "I married her to put her under the protection of the Moretti name. I put my name on Lily's birth certificate. I made sure Julian's syndicate believed Caroline had died in a car crash in Europe."
Answer One: Luca's marriage to Caroline began as a rescue mission to save her and her unborn child from a monster.
Open Two: If Julian was an international arms dealer, how could Luca fight a man who operated above the law?
"If he knows she's alive," Caroline cried, panicking, "he'll take her, Luca! He has the money and the power to rip her away from us!"
"He won't touch her," Luca said, his voice turning to steel. "He sent this necklace as a psychological tactic. He wants us to panic."
Luca hit the intercom button on his desk.
"Marco. Full lockdown. No one enters or leaves the estate. Triple the guard rotation."
He looked at me.
"Emma. Bring Lily here. Now."
"Yes, sir," I said, turning to run to the door.
But as I reached for the brass handle, the heavy oak doors violently swung open.

Standing in the doorway, bleeding from a deep cut on his forehead, was Marco.
"Boss," Marco gasped, clutching his side. "The south gate was breached. They hit us with a synchronized explosive. They're already inside the perimeter."
