Chapter 5 - The Faded Train Ticket

Luca’s face went dangerously blank.
He didn't yell. He didn't threaten.
He walked slowly toward Vanessa until he was standing inches away from her.
"You locked a seven-year-old boy in a pantry?"
Vanessa backed up until she hit the edge of the dining table. "He was screaming, Luca! He threw a tantrum because I wouldn't let him eat the caviar. He’s out of control!"
Leo peeked out from behind Teresa’s legs.
"I wasn't screaming for food," the little boy whispered. "I was screaming because she took Nonna’s medicine."
Teresa gasped and pressed a hand to her chest.
Luca turned sharply. "What medicine?"
"My heart pills," Teresa whispered, looking terrified. "I... I couldn't find them this morning. I thought I misplaced the bottle."
Luca looked back at Vanessa. The temperature in the room seemed to drop twenty degrees.
"You stole my mother's heart medication?"
"I didn't steal it!" Vanessa cried, tears of panic finally spilling down her cheeks. "I just moved it! I was going to give it back! I just needed her to feel a little weak today so she wouldn't try to take over the dinner!"
A collective murmur of disgust rolled through the wealthy guests.
Even Patricia, the wedding coordinator, looked physically sick.
"You risked my mother's life," Luca said softly. "Over a dinner party."
"It's not just a dinner party!" Vanessa screamed, dropping the polite facade completely. "It's my life, Luca! If I don't marry you, my family is on the street! We have nothing!"
She ripped her designer clutch open and threw a crumpled piece of paper onto the table.
"Look at it!" she cried. "Look at what my father has been reduced to!"
Luca picked up the paper.
It wasn't a bank statement. It wasn't a foreclosure notice.
It was a faded, yellowed train ticket.
Dated thirty years ago.
Luca frowned, looking at the name printed on the faded ink.
Passenger: Arthur Bellini.
Destination: Chicago.
"What is this?" Luca asked.
Vanessa wiped her mascara-stained cheeks. "That’s the ticket my father used to come to this city. He built our company from nothing. And your father ruined him."
Teresa froze. "Roberto never ruined anyone."
"He stole my father’s first major contract!" Vanessa shouted at the older woman. "He stole the money that built the Moretti empire! You owe us this wedding, Luca! You owe us your fortune!"
Luca looked at the train ticket again.
Then he flipped it over.
There was handwriting on the back. Faded blue ink.
Luca read the words aloud, his voice echoing in the quiet room.
"Paid in full by Roberto Moretti, to give my friend Arthur a second chance."
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Luca looked at her, his eyes blazing. "My father didn't steal from your family. He bought your father's train ticket to Chicago. He gave him his start."
"No," Mrs. Bellini whispered from the floor, shaking her head. "No, Arthur said Roberto cheated him..."
"He lied," Teresa said softly.
Everyone looked at her.
Teresa walked forward, still holding Leo’s hand. She reached into her small navy handbag.
"I didn't want to bring this up, Luca," Teresa whispered. "But she leaves me no choice."
Teresa pulled out a small, folded hospital bill.
But it didn't belong to Teresa.

She handed it to me.
"Hannah," Teresa said gently. "I think you need to look at this."
