Chapter 7 - The Secret in the Photograph

Vanessa slammed the old photograph onto the dining table.
"You think your mother is a saint?" Vanessa yelled, her voice breaking. "Take a look, Luca. Look at the woman you're defending."
Luca picked up the photograph.
I could see it from where I stood. It was a black-and-white picture of a young Teresa. She was standing in a hospital nursery, looking through the glass at a newborn baby.
She looked exhausted, crying, but she wasn't holding the child.
She was handing a thick envelope of cash to a doctor.
"Your mother didn't just clean houses, Luca," Vanessa said, her voice dripping with venom. "She bought her way into this family. That baby in the nursery? That was you. She bought you."
Teresa gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room.
Luca stared at the photo. Then he looked at his mother.
"Mama?" his voice was barely a whisper. "What is this?"
Teresa's eyes filled with tears. She didn't look away.
"It's true," Teresa whispered. "I'm not your biological mother."
The room erupted into shocked whispers.
Vanessa smiled triumphantly. "See? She's a fraud. She lied to you your entire life. She paid a doctor to hide the truth."
Luca didn't react to Vanessa. He walked slowly toward Teresa and stopped right in front of her.
"Who was she?" Luca asked gently.
Teresa swallowed hard, tears spilling over her wrinkled cheeks.
"Her name was Maria. She was a young waitress who worked at the bakery with me. She was terrified, alone, and very sick. When you were born, she knew she wouldn't survive the infection."
Teresa reached out and touched Luca's cheek.
"She begged me to take you. My husband and I couldn't have children. But the hospital wouldn't release you to us without the proper fees and legal paperwork. We didn't have the money."
Michael stepped forward. "So how did you pay for it?"
Teresa looked at the photograph. "I sold the only thing of value I had. The diamond ring my grandmother smuggled out of Italy."
She looked back up at Luca.
"I bought your hospital release papers, Luca. Not you. I gave up everything I owned so you wouldn't go into the foster system. I gave you my name, my home, and my heart."
Luca’s eyes filled with tears.
He didn't pull away. He covered Teresa’s hand with his own.
"You didn't lie to me, Mama," Luca whispered. "You saved my life."
Vanessa’s triumphant smile vanished. "No! You're supposed to be furious! She kept this from you!"
Luca finally turned to his fiancée. His face was stone.
"The only thing I'm furious about is that you thought a piece of paper meant more to me than the woman who raised me."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone.
"It's over, Vanessa," Luca said. "I'm calling the police. For the embezzlement, the corporate espionage, and for stealing my mother's medication."
"Wait!" Vanessa screamed in panic.
She grabbed her mother's arm, practically dragging Mrs. Bellini toward the door.

But then Vanessa stopped. She turned around, her eyes wild.
"If you call the police," Vanessa hissed, "you'll never find the final piece of the veil."
