Chapter 6 - The Name on the Hospital Bill

My hands shook as I took the folded paper from Teresa.
It was a medical invoice from Chicago General Hospital.
The patient's name was printed clearly at the top.
David Sullivan.
My father.
I stared at the total amount due. It was zero. The massive surgery bill that had been keeping me awake at night, the debt that forced me to take Vanessa's abuse to keep my job... it was paid off.
"I don't understand," I whispered, tears blurring my vision. "Who paid this?"
Teresa looked at Vanessa. "Tell her."
Vanessa refused to make eye contact with me. She stared at the floor, her jaw clenched.
"Tell her, Vanessa," Luca commanded, his voice dark.
"I paid it," Vanessa spat bitterly.
I gasped. "You?"
Why would the woman who threatened to fire me every day pay off my father’s medical debt?
"Answer one question for me, Hannah," Michael said quietly, stepping forward with his good arm resting on Leo's shoulder. "When did Vanessa hire you?"
"Fourteen months ago," I said, my voice trembling.
Michael nodded. "And when did my brother's company start having mysterious data leaks regarding our real estate acquisitions?"
Luca turned slowly toward his brother. "What are you saying?"
"I’m saying Vanessa’s father didn't just go bankrupt," Michael explained, pulling a flash drive from his pocket. "He was trying to stay afloat by selling insider information to our competitors. And he needed someone inside our house to plant spyware on your home office server."
Michael pointed directly at me.
"He needed a desperate maid who had access to your study."
The room started spinning. "No!" I cried, dropping the bill. "I never planted anything! I swear to God, Mr. Moretti, I never touched your computers!"
"I know you didn't, Hannah," Michael said gently.
He turned his gaze back to Vanessa.
"Because Vanessa didn't use Hannah to plant the spyware. She used Hannah's father's medical debt to blackmail the actual person who did it."
Michael looked at the corner of the room.
Standing in the shadows near the kitchen door was the wedding coordinator.
Patricia Wells.
Patricia burst into tears and covered her face with her hands.
"I'm sorry," Patricia sobbed. "She told me if I didn't plug the drive into your server, she would cancel Mr. Sullivan's charity funding. I couldn't let Hannah's father die."
The guests were completely silent. The sheer scale of the manipulation hung in the air like poison.
Luca looked at Vanessa.
"You used a dying man's hospital bill to blackmail my wedding coordinator into committing corporate espionage?"
Vanessa lifted her chin, her eyes flashing with a desperate, cornered pride.
"I did what I had to do for my family, Luca. Just like you do for yours."
"My family doesn't destroy innocent people," Luca said coldly.
May you like
"Really?" Vanessa sneered. She reached into her gown's pocket and pulled out a small, old photograph.
"Then let's talk about the innocent people your precious mother destroyed to get where she is."
