Chapter 8 - THE BRACELET

The heavy silence in the entryway felt like a lit fuse.
Vanessa’s triumphant smile faltered, her eyes flicking down to the barrel of the gun leveled at her chest. Behind her, Marcus and the three men in gray suits tensed, hands hovering over their weapons, but no one drew. You don’t pull a gun on Luca Moretti unless you’re prepared to die in the next three seconds.
“Luca, what are you doing?” Vanessa demanded, her voice losing its smooth edge. “Put that down. She’s poisoned your mind.”
“Who?” Luca asked, his voice dead calm. “The maid? Or the wife you murdered?”
Vanessa flinched. It was a microscopic movement, but it was enough.
From my hiding spot at the top of the stairs, I held the boy tight against my side. Daniel’s small hands were clutching my apron, trembling. I wrapped my arms around him, burying his face in my shoulder so he wouldn’t have to watch.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Vanessa lied, her chin jutting out. “Marcus tracked your car. We came to save you. Your bodyguard—Daniel—he’s been manipulating you. He’s the one who hid the girl. He’s trying to ruin our wedding.”
“Daniel is unconscious on the floor behind me,” Luca said flatly. “I know exactly what he did. But he didn’t order the hit on Elena in the hospital last Tuesday. He was trying to hide her from you.”
“She was a threat to the family!” Marcus barked, stepping forward. “To the merger!”
Luca didn’t even look at Marcus. He kept his eyes on Vanessa.
“You paid a nurse to overdose the mother of my child,” Luca said. “And then you hired Charles Hale to scrub the hospital records and find the boy before I did. Not to protect my empire. To secure your place in it.”
Vanessa’s mask finally slipped. The polished, elegant fiancée vanished, replaced by a desperate, cornered predator.
“You owe my father!” she screamed. “Without my family, your syndicate is nothing! We built you! I have earned my place at the head of that table, and I will not lose it to some street trash from the South Side and a bastard child!”
I felt Daniel stiffen against me. I pressed my cheek to his hair. “Don’t listen to her,” I whispered fiercely.
Downstairs, Luca slowly lowered the gun.
For a terrifying second, I thought he was backing down. The men in gray suits shifted forward.
“You think you built me?” Luca asked softly.
He reached into his pocket with his free hand and pulled out his phone. He pressed one button and tossed it onto the glass-covered floor at Vanessa’s feet.
The screen was lit up with a live video feed.
Vanessa looked down.
On the screen, heavily armed federal agents were raiding a massive shipping warehouse. Pallets of illegal weapons and cash were being seized.
“That’s your father’s port,” Luca said.
Vanessa gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.
“I knew your family was skimming from me for years,” Luca explained, his voice like ice water. “I tolerated it because of the peace. But the moment you touched what was mine, the peace ended. I gave the FBI the ledger an hour ago.”
Marcus grabbed his own phone, dialing frantically. “No one’s answering,” he panicked. “The port is gone. They took everyone.”
“Your father is currently in federal custody,” Luca told Vanessa, who was now shaking uncontrollably. “Your assets are frozen. Your men are scattered. You have no leverage. You have no family. You have nothing.”
Vanessa stared at him, her face completely drained of color. “Luca… please. I was just trying to protect our future.”
“Our future ended the moment you walked into my house,” Luca said.
He looked at Marcus, then at the men in gray suits.
“Leave the property,” Luca commanded. “Or I drop the bodies right here and let the feds sort it out in the morning.”
The mercenaries in the gray suits didn’t hesitate. They had been hired by a billionaire; they weren’t going to die for a bankrupt woman. They turned and walked away into the night.
Marcus looked at his sister, then at Luca. He swallowed hard, backed up, and ran toward the Mercedes.
Vanessa stood alone in the doorway. The cold wind whipped her expensive silk coat around her legs.
“You’ll regret this,” she whispered, tears of pure rage spilling over her cheeks.
“Do not ever come near me or my son again,” Luca said. He reached out and slammed the heavy steel door in her face.
The brownstone plunged back into silence.
Luca exhaled a long, ragged breath. He dropped the gun onto a side table and scrubbed his hands over his face. The untouchable boss was suddenly just a man who had lost a decade of his life to lies.
Slowly, he turned and looked up the stairs.
I was sitting on the top step, still holding Daniel.
Luca walked up the stairs, his footsteps heavy. When he reached us, he didn’t stand over us. He lowered himself to his knees on the hardwood floor, so he was perfectly eye-level with the boy.
Daniel pulled back from me slightly, looking at the man who had just dismantled an empire to avenge his mother.
Luca gently reached out. He didn’t try to hug the boy. Instead, he reached for Daniel’s wrist.
Around Daniel’s small wrist was a braided leather bracelet. Frayed and old.
Luca pulled up the cuff of his own expensive suit jacket.
Wrapped around his thick wrist was an identical braided leather bracelet.
“Your mother made this for me the year we were married,” Luca whispered, tears finally pooling in his dark eyes. “She made yours the day she found out she was pregnant. I never took mine off. Not for a single day.”
Daniel stared at the matching bracelets. The last wall of his defense crumbled.
“She said… she said you hated us,” Daniel sobbed, his chest heaving.
“I loved her,” Luca said, his voice breaking completely. “And I will spend the rest of my life proving to you how much I love you.”
Daniel let out a shattered cry and threw his arms around Luca’s neck.

Luca caught his son, burying his face in the boy’s shoulder, holding him as if he would never let him go.
I sat back against the wall, tears streaming down my face, watching a family finally find each other in the dark.
