Chapter 9 - THE HAPPY ENDING

"Under arrest?" I gasped, stepping instinctively in front of Luca. "No! You have the wrong man. The man on the floor, Marcus Collins, he's the one who orchestrated the embezzlement!"
The FBI agent, a tall man with graying temples named Agent Harris, looked at me with a mixture of pity and exhaustion.
"Ma'am, step aside. We have a mountain of wire transfers leading directly from the Moretti syndicate accounts to offshore shell companies. Luca Moretti's name is all over the authorization forms."
"Because his fiancée forged his signature!" I argued frantically, my heart pounding. "Vanessa Bellini! She was working with my uncle!"
Luca gently placed his hands on my shoulders, moving me aside. He was perfectly calm, an eerie contrast to the flashing red and blue lights illuminating the cabin.
"It's alright, Sarah," Luca said softly. He held his hands out to the agent. "I'll go quietly."
"Luca, no!" I cried, grabbing his arm. "They'll put you away forever. You didn't do this!"
Luca looked down at me, his dark eyes filled with a profound, quiet peace I had never seen in him before.
"I know," he smiled gently. "Trust me."
The agents clicked heavy steel handcuffs around Luca's wrists and led him off the plane, leaving me standing on the tarmac, shivering in the cold morning air as the sun began to rise over Chicago.
I didn't go back to the estate. I went straight to the federal courthouse downtown.
For three agonizing days, I sat in the hard wooden pews of the gallery, watching as federal prosecutors threw everything they had at Luca.
They paraded banking records. They showed the shell corporations. They painted him as a ruthless mob boss bleeding his own family dry.
Luca sat at the defense table, his posture perfect, his expression serene. He didn't look worried. He just kept looking back at me, offering a reassuring smile that broke my heart every time.
On the fourth day, the prosecution called their star witness.
Agent Harris took the stand.
"Agent Harris," the prosecutor asked, projecting his voice for the jury. "Can you confirm that the offshore accounts holding the embezzled fifty million dollars were accessed by the defendant, Luca Moretti?"
"No, I cannot," Agent Harris answered clearly.
The prosecutor frowned. "Excuse me?"
Agent Harris adjusted his microphone. "Yesterday afternoon, our cyber division finally cracked the encryption on the shell corporations set up in Geneva."
He looked directly at the jury.
"The accounts were not set up by Luca Moretti. They were established by Marcus Collins and Vanessa Bellini. Furthermore, we discovered a hidden digital failsafe embedded in the transfers."
The courtroom went dead silent.
"What kind of failsafe?" the judge asked, leaning forward.
"A tracker," Agent Harris explained. "Someone had deliberately laced the stolen funds with digital tracking code over the last three years. Every time Vanessa and Marcus moved money, this code recorded the IP addresses, the shell company names, and the exact timestamps."
I gasped, my hands flying to my mouth.
"Who planted the code?" the prosecutor demanded, clearly losing control of his own witness.
"We traced the origin of the code back to a secure server," Agent Harris said. "The server was registered to Arthur Collins."
My father.
Tears immediately flooded my eyes. My quiet, boring father. He hadn't just discovered the embezzlement. He had built a trap. He had spent his last months alive compiling the ultimate evidence against his own brother, knowing it would cost him his life.
"And did Luca Moretti know about this?" the prosecutor asked weakly.
"Mr. Moretti handed us the decryption keys for the tracker the night he was arrested," Agent Harris admitted. "He has been cooperating with the FBI for the last six months to build a RICO case against Marcus Collins and the corrupt elements of his own syndicate."
The courtroom erupted in shocked whispers.
Luca hadn't just been playing the mob boss. He had been dismantling his own empire from the inside out, waiting for the perfect moment to hand the feds everything they needed to clean house.
The judge banged his gavel. "Case dismissed. Release the defendant."
I didn't wait for the guards to unlock his cuffs. I burst through the wooden swinging doors of the gallery, ignoring the bailiffs, and threw myself at Luca.
He caught me effortlessly, spinning me around in the middle of the courtroom, burying his face in my neck as I sobbed uncontrollably into his shoulder.
"I told you to trust me," he whispered fiercely against my ear.
"You terrified me!" I laughed through my tears, hitting his chest weakly.
"I'm sorry," he smiled, wiping my tears with his thumbs. "But it's done. Marcus is going away for life. The syndicate is dismantled. The legitimate businesses are secure. No more mafia. No more looking over our shoulders."
He rested his forehead against mine.
"We're free."
One Year Later.
The autumn leaves in the Moretti estate gardens were ablaze in colors of gold and crimson.
I stood on the back patio, breathing in the crisp air, watching my sister Maya laugh as she played fetch with a golden retriever puppy on the sprawling lawn.
I wasn't wearing a black housekeeping uniform anymore.
I was wearing a soft, cream-colored cashmere sweater and a simple pair of jeans. But the most important thing I was wearing was the heavy, breathtaking diamond ring on my left hand.
Strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling my back flush against a solid chest.
Luca rested his chin on my shoulder, sighing contentedly as he watched Maya and the dog.
"Mr. CEO," I smiled, leaning back into his embrace.
"Mrs. Moretti," he corrected, his voice a low, happy rumble. We had been married for two months in a small, private ceremony in Italy. No mob bosses. No bodyguards. Just us.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, familiar object.
He held it out to me.
It was my father's black wooden rosary.
"I had the silver crucifix polished," Luca said softly. "But I left the scratch Maya made. I thought you might want to keep it."
I took it gently, my eyes filling with happy tears. My father had died a hero. He had saved us all.
"Thank you," I whispered, holding it to my heart.
Luca turned me around to face him, his dark eyes filled with absolute, unwavering love.
"I promised your father I would watch over his daughters," Luca said, brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. "But I never expected one of them to save me in return."
I reached up, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling him down to me.
"We saved each other," I smiled.

When he kissed me, there was no fear, no secrets, no shadows lurking in the corners. There was only the bright, beautiful promise of a lifetime of peace.
We were finally home.
