Chapter 9 - THE HEIRLOOM (THE CLIMAX)

The sickening crunch of metal on metal echoed across the empty tarmac.

The plane's front landing gear collapsed as it struck the heavy armored side of the SUV. The jet’s nose dropped, scraping violently against the concrete runway in a shower of brilliant orange sparks.

Inside the SUV, the airbags deployed instantly. Luca’s vision went white, his ears ringing from the deafening sound of the crash.

The plane spun wildly out of control, sliding for another hundred yards before finally coming to a halt near the edge of the grass, smoke billowing from its right engine.

Luca pushed the deflating airbag away. His ribs screamed in protest, and blood trickled down his forehead, but he grabbed his gun and kicked his shattered door open.

Sirens wailed in the distance. Airport security and police were swarming, but they were minutes away.

Luca sprinted toward the smoking plane. The emergency exit door was kicked open from the inside. One of Carmine’s men stumbled out, dazed and bleeding, raising his weapon.

Luca didn't hesitate. Two shots rang out. The man dropped to the concrete.

Luca leaped up onto the wing and pulled himself into the cabin.

Thick smoke filled the interior. The second trafficker was coughing, trying to unbuckle Hannah, who was screaming in terror.

"Let her go," Luca commanded, the barrel of his gun pressed directly against the back of the man's head.

The trafficker froze, slowly raising his hands, and backed away.

Luca holstered his weapon, reaching down and swiftly unbuckling the belts holding Hannah to the seat. She collapsed into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably.

"I've got you," Luca said gently, shielding her body with his own as he guided her out of the smoke-filled cabin and down onto the cool grass just as the first squad cars arrived.

One Month Later.

The sun shone brightly through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the Moretti estate's grand dining room.

The room looked completely different than it had on the night of the disastrous engagement dinner. The dark velvet curtains had been replaced with light, airy linen. The heavy mafia atmosphere seemed to have finally lifted.

Luca stood at the head of the long oak table, dressed in a casual blue linen shirt.

To his right sat Leo, dressed in a sharp new suit, animatedly discussing a college business program with Daniel. The boy who had spent nineteen years in a concrete bunker was finally stepping into the sun, claiming his rightful place in the Moretti family—not as a threat, but as Luca’s trusted brother.

To Luca’s left sat Evelyn Mitchell. She looked ten years younger. The gray in her hair was elegantly styled, and she was smiling as she held a delicate porcelain teacup.

And next to Evelyn, bouncing a giggling, healthy newborn baby boy on her knee, was Hannah.

Luca had hired the best lawyers in Chicago to clear Hannah's debts, ensuring she and her baby would never have to worry about money again. She had chosen to stay in Chicago, moving into a beautiful townhouse Luca purchased for her, visiting the estate every weekend.

The dining room doors opened.

Lauren walked in.

She wasn't wearing a maid’s uniform. She wore a stunning emerald green dress, her hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. Her knee had fully healed, leaving only a faint, fading scar.

She walked over to her mother, kissing Evelyn on the cheek, before stopping beside Luca.

"You're late," Luca teased, his dark eyes softening in a way they only did for her.

"I was at the clinic," Lauren smiled, holding up a file. "Finalizing the charity foundation paperwork. The 'Evelyn Mitchell Shelter for Women' officially opens next week."

"Perfect," Luca said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

The room went quiet. Leo grinned. Evelyn pressed a hand to her heart.

Luca opened the box. Inside rested a breathtaking, antique diamond ring—the true Moretti family heirloom, worn by generations of matriarchs who led with love, not greed.

"Lauren," Luca said softly, taking her hand. "You walked into my house a maid, trying to pay your rent. You stood up to a monster to save a stranger. You saved my brother. You saved my family."

He slipped the ring onto her finger.

"Will you let me spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to carry the weight of the world alone again?"

Lauren looked at her mother, who nodded tearfully. She looked at Hannah’s safe, smiling baby.

Then she looked at the man who had torn apart an airport and an empire just to keep them safe.

May you like

"Yes," Lauren whispered, smiling through her tears. "I will."

Luca pulled her into a kiss, and for the first time in his life, the mafia boss knew exactly what it meant to be truly wealthy.
