Chapter 12 - THE FINAL PORTRAIT

I looked down at the most powerful Mafia boss in the country, kneeling on my foyer floor.

I looked at Luca, who was staring at me with a mixture of absolute awe and deep, blazing pride.

"My orders," I said clearly, my voice unwavering, "are that the mandate is dissolved. Luca Moretti is the undisputed Don of Chicago. And there will be no arranged marriages, no forced alliances, and no more bloodshed."

Falcone kept his head bowed. "As you command."

"Furthermore," I continued, feeling the weight of decades of violence finally lifting off this house. "The Moretti family is pivoting. All illegal operations will be systematically dismantled over the next five years. We are moving entirely into legitimate real estate."

Falcone looked up, shocked. "You would dissolve the syndicate?"

"I would save our souls," I corrected him. "You have your orders. Leave my home."

Falcone stood up slowly. He gave me a respectful nod, signaled his men, and walked out into the freezing Chicago snow.

The heavy doors clicked shut behind them.

The silence that followed was deafening.

I let out a long, shuddering breath and collapsed against Luca’s chest.

His strong arms wrapped around me, pulling me tight against his racing heart. He buried his face in my neck, inhaling deeply.

"You just overthrew the entire American Mafia with a string of wooden beads," he whispered, a breathless laugh escaping his lips. "Remind me never to make you angry."

"I'm retiring," I joked, tears of relief spilling down my cheeks. "That was my first and last act as a Mob Boss."

Luca pulled back, cupping my face in his warm hands. He looked into my eyes with a love so profound it healed every broken piece of my past.

"Marry me, Claire," he said softly. "Not for an alliance. Not for a treaty. Just because I can't breathe without you."

"Yes," I whispered, pulling him down for a kiss that promised a lifetime of peace.

One year later.

We were standing in the grand foyer of our new home—a quiet, sprawling beachfront property in Malibu, thousands of miles away from the cold, violent streets of Chicago.

We had left the empire to Daniel to manage its transition into legality. We had chosen a simple, quiet life.

Toby was running across the hardwood floors, chasing a golden retriever puppy Luca had bought him for his seventh birthday.

"Careful, buddy," Luca called out, laughing as Toby slid across the floor in his socks.

I stood near the fireplace, watching my husband and my son. I rubbed my pregnant belly, feeling a soft kick from the baby girl we were expecting in two months.

Above the fireplace hung the massive wedding portrait of Luca’s parents.

It had survived Vanessa, the fire, and the mob. It was a testament to love enduring through the darkest of times.

Luca walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder.

"It looks perfect right there," he murmured, looking up at the painting.

"It does," I agreed, leaning back into his warmth.

I reached up and touched the silver pocket watch—the one Vanessa had stolen so long ago—which now hung securely on a chain around Luca’s neck.

The watch wasn't broken anymore. Luca had it fixed.

It was ticking quietly, steadily, counting every beautiful second of the life we had fought so hard to build.

Where there was once fear, there was only light. Where there was a housekeeper, there was a queen.

And where there was a broken Mafia boss, there was just a husband, a father, and a man who had finally found his way home.
