Chapter 11 - THE RING

The fire crackled in the hearth, casting warm, dancing shadows across the mahogany walls of the study.
Lucy stared at the small velvet box in Luca’s hand, the air in the room suddenly feeling very thin.
He didn't open it immediately. He held it carefully, his large fingers tracing the velvet edges, his dark eyes locked onto her face.
"When I hired you nine months ago," Luca said, his voice a low, steady rumble, "I thought you were just a quiet girl trying to make ends meet. I watched you scrub floors. I watched you carry trays. And I watched how you looked at me."
Lucy flushed, dropping her gaze to her hands. "I... I shouldn't have stared."
"I liked it," Luca confessed, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips. "It made me realize how lonely this house was. Even with Clara parading around, planning a wedding, the estate felt dead. You brought a quiet dignity to this place. You cared about the staff. You remembered the security guards’ names."
He leaned forward, placing the velvet box on the desk next to the child's drawing.
"And tonight," Luca continued, the smile fading into something fierce and resolute, "I watched you headbutt an assassin. I watched you jump across a freezing lake to save your son. I watched you willingly walk into a Morano stronghold with nothing but a pistol and raw courage."
Lucy’s eyes filled with fresh tears. "I didn't have a choice. He’s my son."
"Exactly," Luca said softly. "You love without condition. You fight without hesitation. You are exactly the kind of woman I want standing beside me."
He flipped the lid of the velvet box open.
Inside sat a breathtaking diamond ring. It wasn't the ostentatious, gaudy rock Clara had demanded. It was an elegant, vintage cut, surrounded by deep blue sapphires.
"This belonged to my grandmother," Luca said. "It has been in the Moretti family for four generations."
Lucy stared at the ring, completely overwhelmed. "Luca... I’m a maid. I’m a single mother with a cartel target on my back. I can't... you can't..."
"I can," Luca interrupted, his voice leaving no room for argument. "And I will."
He stood up, walking around the desk, and knelt in front of her chair. He took her trembling, bruised hands in his.
"If you marry me," Luca promised, looking deeply into her eyes, "Leo becomes a Moretti. He falls under my absolute protection. No Morano, no rival syndicate, no lone assassin will ever touch him. I will raise him as my own son. And you will never scrub another floor, run from another threat, or hide in the shadows ever again."
Reversal.
He wasn't just offering her a marriage of convenience for protection. He was offering her a family. A real, unbreakable family.
"Why?" Lucy whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Why would you do this for me?"
Luca reached up, gently wiping the tear away with his thumb.
"Because I love you," he said, the words simple, profound, and utterly true. "I think I have since the day you yelled at the landscaper for stepping on a bird’s nest."
A small, wet laugh escaped Lucy’s lips. "You heard that?"
"I hear everything," Luca smiled.
He picked up the ring from the box. "Lucy Bennett. Will you let me take care of you? Both of you?"
Lucy looked at the man kneeling in front of her. The fierce, untouchable mafia boss who had torn Chicago apart tonight to save a little boy he barely knew. The man who had gently wrapped his coat around her shivering shoulders.
She didn't need to run anymore. She didn't need to hide.
"Yes," she sobbed, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Luca."
He caught her, burying his face in her neck, holding her tight against him. He slipped the heavy, perfect ring onto her finger.
It was a promise of safety. A vow of forever.
They stayed like that for a long time, the chaos of the night finally melting away into the quiet warmth of the fire.
Eventually, Luca pulled back, kissing her softly on the lips.
"Come on," he murmured. "Let’s go check on our boy."
He helped her up, keeping his arm securely around her waist to support her injured leg. They walked slowly up the grand staircase to the guest wing.
When they opened the bedroom door, Leo was still fast asleep, tangled in the heavy down comforter.
Lucy sat on the edge of the bed, gently brushing the dark curls from her son’s forehead. He looked so peaceful, completely untouched by the violence that had nearly consumed him hours ago.
Luca stood in the doorway, watching them. The hardened edges of his face were completely gone. He looked like a man who had finally found exactly what he had been looking for his entire life.
Suddenly, Daniel’s voice crackled over Luca’s earpiece, breaking the silence.
"Boss. Sorry to interrupt."
Luca stepped out into the hallway, pulling the door partially closed. "What is it, Daniel?"
"The police just finished processing the old paper mill," Daniel reported. "They’re loading Clara into a transport van now. But... there’s a problem."
Luca frowned, his protective instincts instantly flaring. "What problem?"
"We searched Clara’s safe house," Daniel said, his voice tense. "We found the bank records. The fake IDs. The offshore accounts."
"And?"
"And she didn't act alone eight years ago, Boss," Daniel revealed. "She had a partner. Someone who helped her stage Vanessa’s drowning. Someone who has been funneling her money this entire time."
Luca went completely still. "Who?"
"We don't know," Daniel replied. "The accounts are heavily encrypted. But we found one physical piece of evidence in her safe. A photograph."
"Of who?"
"Of Lucy," Daniel said. "Taken ten years ago. When she was still in high school."

Luca’s blood turned to ice.
"Boss," Daniel continued, the dread clear in his voice. "Whoever Clara was working with... they didn't target Vanessa first. They were targeting Lucy all along."
