Chapter 9 - THE HAPPY ENDING

Bone crunched.
Vanessa shrieked, her legs buckling instantly. She collapsed to the concrete, dropping the silver revolver.
I dove for the gun, kicking it far across the warehouse floor.
At that exact second, the skylights above shattered.
Luca and Dante breached the warehouse from the roof, dropping down on repelling lines while a dozen armed men flooded through the main doors.
Vanessa’s few remaining guards didn’t even try to fire. They dropped their weapons, realizing they were vastly outnumbered.
Luca landed on the concrete, his gun aimed directly at Vanessa’s head.
“It’s over, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice cold enough to freeze the ocean.
Vanessa was sobbing on the floor, clutching her shattered knees. “My father will kill you, Luca! The Bellini family will wipe you out!”
“Your father is currently in federal custody,” Luca replied smoothly. “While you were playing games at the bank, I handed the FBI a dossier proving his involvement in extortion, murder, and the attempted theft of my family’s estate. Your family is finished in Chicago.”
Vanessa stared at him, the color draining from her beautiful, cruel face.
She had lost everything.
I didn’t care about her anymore.
I dropped to my knees beside my mother, frantically untying the ropes. “Mom, I’ve got you. You’re safe.”
My mother looked up, tears in her tired eyes. “Emma… my brave girl.”
Beside us, the little boy was trembling.
Luca slowly lowered his weapon and handed it to Dante. He knelt on the dirty concrete, ignoring the blood and the rain, and looked at the boy.
He pulled Sofia’s silver bracelet from his pocket.
“Leo,” Luca said softly.
The little boy looked up.
“My mom had a bracelet like that,” Leo whispered.
“I know,” Luca smiled, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. “She was my sister. I’m your Uncle Luca. And I am never going to let anyone hurt you ever again.”
Leo hesitated for a second before throwing his tiny arms around Luca’s neck, burying his face in his shoulder. Luca held him so tightly it looked like he was trying to merge their souls.
Dante signaled the men, and they dragged a screaming, ruined Vanessa out of the warehouse.
Luca stood up, holding his nephew in one arm. He walked over to me.
He reached down and helped me to my feet.
“She needs a hospital,” I said, looking at my mother.
“Dr. Harris is waiting at the estate,” Luca promised. “We have the best neurologists in the country flying in tomorrow morning. She will never suffer another day in her life.”
I looked at him, overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of what we had survived.
Luca reached out and gently touched my unbruised right cheek.
“You saved my family, Emma,” he whispered, his dark eyes filled with absolute reverence.
“We saved each other,” I replied.

He leaned down and kissed me. It wasn’t a rush of adrenaline. It was a slow, deliberate promise. The kind of kiss that rewrites the past and secures the future.
The nightmare was over. We were going home.
