Chapter 6 - SHATTERED ILLUSIONS

The massive stone fireplace crackled, the only sound in the suffocating silence of the library.

“Take Leo upstairs,” Adrian ordered, moving swiftly to a hidden panel behind his desk. He pressed his thumb against a scanner, and the wall slid open to reveal a wall of firearms and tactical gear. “Maria will lock you both in the panic room.”

“I’m not leaving you down here alone,” I argued, my maternal instincts fighting a desperate battle against common sense.

“Tessa, listen to me,” Adrian said, stepping close and gripping my shoulders. His touch was firm, grounding me in the terrifying reality. “Marcus doesn’t leave witnesses. If they breach this house, you and Leo have to survive. That is all that matters.”

For the first time in two years, the unreadable billionaire let his walls fall completely. He looked at me, and I saw a desperate, aching vulnerability that stole the breath from my lungs.

“I watched you for two years,” he whispered, his thumb lightly brushing against my cheek. “I watched you raise a child that wasn’t yours with a ferocity most mothers never achieve. I hid you because of guilt, Tessa. But I kept you by my side because I couldn’t bear the thought of a life without you in it.”

Tears spilled over my lashes. I reached up, my hand covering his.

“Adrian...”

“Go,” he pleaded, his voice breaking.

Maria appeared in the doorway, gently taking Leo’s hand. I gave Adrian one last look before grabbing my son and following the housekeeper down a long, dimly lit corridor. The panic room was hidden behind a heavy steel door in the master suite. It was cold, lined with monitors displaying every security camera on the estate.

I sat on the cot, pulling Leo into my lap. He finally seemed to sense the danger, burying his face in my sweater.

I watched the monitors. Adrian was pacing the grand foyer, a heavy weapon in his hands. He looked like a king preparing to defend his castle to the death.

Minutes stretched into eternity.

Suddenly, every monitor screen in the panic room flickered. Static hissed through the audio feed.

“What’s happening?” I asked Maria.

“The perimeter alarms,” she whispered, her eyes wide with fear. “They just went offline.”

I stared at the main camera feeding from the grand foyer. Complete silence descended on the estate. No sirens. No breaking glass.

Then, slowly, almost politely, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion swung open.

A single figure stepped into the grand foyer, hands raised in the air.

Adrian leveled his weapon, his finger tightening on the trigger. But he didn’t fire.

Through the grainy camera feed, I recognized the impeccably tailored suit, now ruined with dirt and blood.

It was Vincent Calder.
