Chapter 8 - THE FAMILY HEIRLOOM

The police sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as they wound their way up the Greenwich estate’s long driveway.
Dante didn’t flinch. In his world, the police were a formality to be managed by high-priced lawyers, not a threat. Vincenzo and his men would be handed over quietly, the narrative controlled, the scandal contained.
But right now, the only thing that mattered was the velvet box in Dante’s hand.
He didn’t open it immediately. He looked at me, his dark eyes searching my face.
“My family has taken a lot from people,” Dante said quietly, the chaos of the room fading into the background. “We trade in fear. We buy silence. I thought Isabella loved me, but she only loved the power.”
He looked at Leo, who was now sitting safely in Rosa’s lap, the elderly woman stroking his dark hair with tears in her eyes.
“You had nothing to gain tonight, Claire,” Dante continued. “You risked your life, your job, everything, just to make sure a deaf child and an old woman were heard.”
He popped the velvet box open.
Inside wasn't an engagement ring. It wasn't money.
It was a heavy, antique gold locket bearing the Moretti family crest.
“This belonged to my grandmother,” Dante said, his voice rough with emotion. “It is the family heirloom. It is only given to the women who protect the heart of this family.”
He held it out to me.
“I am a housekeeper, Mr. Moretti,” I whispered, stepping back, overwhelmed. “I can’t accept that. I just want to go home to my father.”
“Your father,” Dante said smoothly, “was transferred to the Mount Sinai VIP orthopedic wing twenty minutes ago while we were dealing with Marcus. The best surgeons in New York are prepping him for total hip reconstruction. It’s fully paid for. He will have the justice he deserves for what my men did to him.”
My breath hitched. Tears blurred my vision.
“And your brother,” Dante added, “has a full scholarship to Gallaudet University waiting for him whenever he’s ready.”
I covered my mouth with my hand. I had spent years drowning in medical bills, working myself to the bone, watching my family struggle. In one night, Dante had fixed everything.
“I don’t know how to repay you,” I choked out, a tear escaping down my cheek.
Dante stood up, wincing at his shoulder, and took a step closer to me. He gently took the USB drive from my left hand, and replaced it with the gold locket.
“You don’t repay me, Claire,” Dante murmured. “You already gave me back my family. You are no longer a maid in this house.”
I looked down at the heavy gold crest resting in my palm.
“Then what am I?” I asked softly.
Dante smiled. A real, genuine smile that made him look ten years younger.
“Whatever you want to be.”
Behind us, Rosa watched the exchange. She smiled, raising her hands to sign to Leo.
Safe now, she told him.
Leo looked at me, his bright eyes wide, and signed back.
Claire stay?
May you like
I looked at the little boy, then at the man standing in front of me, bleeding but unbreakable.
For the first time in years, I didn't want to disappear.
